Lynd's Apple Picking Process
Learn how to come to lynd fruit farm and pick your own farm fresh apples!
I'm Andy land from Lynd Fruit Farm and I represent the fourth generation of apple growers at our farm located in central Ohio in Pataskala. A picture at our farm is a little bit different than other orchards that also do pick your own. A family decides they're going to go out and pick apples for the day and once they get to the intersection of Morse Rd. and State Route 310 they'll see signage. And on any given day, the apples that were picking maybe east of 310 or west of 310 it depends on the variety. So they'll look for that signage and they'll turn accordingly. And then they'll see another arrow that points into the orchard on a driveway, a nice paved driveway. So they'll pull into that driveway and then they'll eventually come to a greeter. And the greeter is somebody that works for us that is very pleasant and knowledgeable about what's going on.
And they'll ask, how are you today? Uh, you looking forward to picking apples, how many apples would you like to pick? And usually the customer knows the routine and they'll say, we'll take one bag, half Bushel bag. They'll take the bag and then there'll be directed into the orchard to pull forward and find the area where we're picking the park, wherever they'd like, get out of their car and wander through the orchard and pick apples. And then when they're finished, they reload their car, their apples into their car, and they continue pulling forward until they come to the checkout area where we have other employees who will collect the money for the apples, and then the customer is on their way.
Lynd Peach Pruning 1
Andy Lynd of Lynd Fruit Farm in Pataskala, Ohio prunes peach trees in a quick fashion. This is just a fun video. An informational video is to follow on why and how Andy is pruning the trees. However, you might notice the large branches he is taking out. Peaches need LOTS of sunlight! Eliminating some branches allow more sun to reach each peach. Check out lyndfruitfarm.com for more.

Currently in the 8th generation of Lynd apple growers. The 1st, 2nd, & 3rd generations were in southern Ohio. A. T. (Alton Tecumseh) Lynd (4th generation) migrated up from southern Ohio in 1919. He purchased an existing 80 acre farm (mostly already in planted orchard) east of Route 310 and along both sides of Morse Road. This original orchard had been planted in about 1880 so some of the trees were close to 40 years old in 1919. This was a very old and mature orchard and would soon have to be replanted.
A.T. raised six sons on these original 80 acres. Three of the six decided to stay “on the farm” (Alvin, Ed & Arnold), and they made the 5th generation of apple growers. Thus, expansion and more production became necessary in order to support three more families. About the mid 40’s, another 80 acres were added between the original orchard location and S.R. #310.
In the late 40’s, bits and pieces of six different farms were acquired from surrounding landowners and added to the expanding orchards totaling 380 acres.
In the early 50’s, a 40 acre existing orchard was acquired that was located about 6-7 miles south of Morse Road in Etna on U.S. Route 40. This was before I-70 was built and Route 40 was a dominant four lane cross country highway. A retail market was built at this location in 1954. It became famous for “Cider, All You Can Drink for 10¢”. Several billboard signs were placed along Route 40 which proved to be quite effective. This concept drew huge summer crowds of highway travelers as well as the locals.
In the early 60’s, a 50 acre plot was acquired west and south of S.R. #310 alexa bliss wwe which for all practical purposes completed the expansion by A.T. and his three sons. There were about 250 to 300 acres of orchard by the mid 60’s and Lynds could boast of being the largest orchard operation in Ohio.
All of this expansion required additional support facilities. So, a new packing house, cold storages, and a cider mill expansion were added. Toward the end of the 60’s some of the 6th generation of Lynds (Mitch, Dave, Lester, Steve) were being absorbed into the operation. This meant more families to support and more expansion/production would be needed.
