WFO Paddling Cootes Paradise - Hamilton, Ontario Canada
We kayak Cootes Paradise in Hamilton Ontario Canada
Date of Visit: Sunday July 1st 2018
Length of paddle: approx. 4.5km
Time to complete: approx. 2hrs (at a leisurely pace)
Weather/wind: HOT, humid, low wind
Paddle Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Launch Arrangement: Wood Dock with ramp
Cootes Paradise Marsh is located in Hamilton, Ontario, is owned and managed by the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG). The marsh is part of the Cootes Paradise nature reserve; a National Historic Site, an Important Bird Area (IBA), and an important Amphibian and Reptile Bird Area (IMPARA).
The history of Cootes is very interesting but rather sad, in the early 1900’s the habitat stated to decline due to pollution and introduction of Carp into Lake Ontario and by 1985 85% of its plant cover was lost and the carp numbers were out of control over 70,000. This lead to the whole area pretty much being invaded by non-native species of both flora and fauna.
Luckily the RBG took over the management and it’s getting better ever since, the wetland is back on track but there is still lots of rehabilitation work being done. It is one of the largest wetland rehabilitation projects in North America.
Although our trip was very hot, it was well worth it to see the Bald Eagle! Samm mentions in the video that Bald Eagles have not been seen for decades in Cootes, and they have not been seen on the Canadian Shores of Lake Ontario for decades. We are so lucky to have seen them twice here.
You can read more about this family of Bald Eagles and their recent hatched young on the RBG page here:
There is also information about which trail to take to see them from the inside the park.
Paddling at Cootes is beautiful, full of wildlife and when you get a little bit away from the road and highway, very quiet.
The have two launch sites and a canoe tour and group tours that can be booked through the website (liked below).
The area is huge, and there are little creeks and inlets to explore all over. We have yet to complete the entire shoreline yet. Please do check out the area maps before heading out and some areas are protected areas and are off limits.
While there is no admission fee, you do have to pay for parking. There are some benches in shaded tree cover near the parking lot. It was hard to find a spot to beach on the shoreline to take a break and you cannot beach on the islands and they are protected bird areas so plan ahead. There are no washroom facilities.
This is a great paddle, perhaps for beginners with a bit of experience. You will definitely see a lot of different wildlife here mostly smaller animals and lots and lots of birds, includes birds of prey.
The launch is great with the dock and ramp, also there was minimal goose droppings which was fantastic.
