Introduction to Ted Talk @ The Lyric Theatre, Blacksburg VA
The is the introduction before playing the TED video
This is the inaugural event in an ongoing free series of opportunities to share ideas during lunch time
You know that old eyesore that's languishing around the corner for the better part of ten years? What if you could change it overnight? How can we drive change in our communities and move past stagnant committees and outdated regulation? In this funny, smart energetic and breathless talk, arts activist Jason Roberts of Better Block encourages us to stop waiting around. Even if that means painting in our own crosswalks and blackmailing ourselves into action.
Join us for a special screening of this talk, followed by a panel discussion featuring agents of change from our own community:
Lindsay West - Founding Chair of the Lyric Council
John Bush - Blacksburg Town Council
Beth Loman - New River Bicycle Association
Janine Kniola, Paula Bolte - Blacksburg Childrens Museum
Live Where You Love: Blacksburg, Virginia
Widely considered to be the hub of the New River Valley, Blacksburg is approximately 20 square miles and is packed with a combination of beauty, charm, and culture. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) serves as the area's largest employer, and continues to be the cultural centerpiece of Blacksburg. With over 30,000 full-time students, the population of Blacksburg almost doubles during the school year. But along with the students, Virginia Tech brings top notch athletics and one of the nation's leading research institutions to Blacksburg. However the charm of Blacksburg doesn't lie solely with the university. The Town is filled with countless cultural, artistic and creative opportunities. In recent years, the arts and culture scene has flourished with venues like the Lyric Theatre, the Armory Art Gallery, and the $89 million dollar Center for the Arts (scheduled to open in 2013). Outdoor lovers are also at home in Blacksburg. Whether hiking on the Huckleberry Trail, the exploring the nearby Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, or fishing in the New River, there are endless outdoor activities throughout the year. Blacksburg residents enjoy the convenience of shopping and dining in the revitalized Downtown. Downtown Blacksburg offers a fantastic destination for townspeople, students, and visitors alike. While development continues in Blacksburg, the Town continues to keep it's small-town charm. Blacksburg real estate options offers a large variety of housing options. There are many neighborhoods and subdivisions - some with community amenities and some even within walking distance to Downtown and Virginia Tech. If you are looking for a little more privacy, then there are options a little bit outside of Blacksburg Town limits that will allow you to have some land, but still be near Downtown Blacksburg.

The Sixteen Squares of Blacksburg
The original Sixteen Squares of Blacksburg were laid out in 1798 by William Black, who petitioned the state legislature to form the Town and named it after himself. He donated 37 acres to the venture, and situated his own house at the end of one of the center streets. The streets that he created are still intact today, and they form the center of the downtown. Within the boundaries of these blocks, there are houses which date to the early 1800's, and there are buildings constructed within the last decade. This diverse mixture of the historic and the modern still creates a unique small town feel, and makes the Town of Blacksburg a Special Place.
Guided Along a Trail of Light
A film by Kohava Blount for the 2018 Bike Shorts Film Festival.
FROM:
Roanoke, VA
SHORT DESCRIPTION:
Principally, this film seeks to convey the idea that following and pursuing the innate goodness in oneself can lead to a unified, whole, and sustaining state of being. This is contrasted against the reality of how other individuals can act as adverse influences, - potentially leading to a hindrance in one’s ultimate growth. The bicycle is a pivotal symbol of a way in which one can become more attuned to not only oneself, but also to the virtue and purity that is observed within nature.
Cast and Crew:
- Kohava Blount - Director
Screened as part of the 2018 Bike Shorts Film Festival organized by RIDE Solutions. Screened at Roanoke's Grandin Theatre and Blacksburg's Lyric Theatre. The Bike Shorts Film Festival awards $1,400 in prizes in seven categories: Juried Prize, Best Original Music, Best Local Film, best Teen Film, an Audience Choice award for each of our regional screenings, and a YouTube Award.
The Bike Shorts Film Festival screens short films that just happen to involve bicycles. The festival focuses on narrative films but has screened documentaries, music videos, trail films, and more. The Festival is part of our annual celebration of National Bike Month.
