Lyttelton Line is a name sometimes used to refer to the section of the Main South Line in New Zealand's South Island between Lyttelton and Christchurch, and can also be used to refer to the operations on this section. As it has always been part of the Main South Line , this name has never been officially used to refer to the track itself. The line between Lyttelton and Christchurch is notable for several reasons, including: incorporating part of the first public railway in New Zealand, between Ferrymead and Christchurch; including in its route the still operational first railway tunnel in New Zealand; and, having been the site of the first electrified suburban service in New Zealand.

Lyttelton TimeBall Station

Lyttelton TimeBall Station
Work is well and truly underway in Lyttelton to rebuild a rare working Timeball Station.
The historic maritime landmark, was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and completely destroyed in the June aftershock.
The Timeball was built in 1876 and was used to signal the time to ships in Lyttelton Harbour, to correct ship instruments for accurate navigation.
The rebuild of the TimeBall is costing more than $2 million and will be on the original site using original materials from the ruin.
Most of the funding has come by donations from the Lyttleton community and other donators
The station is set to be finished by May this year.

We are currently pursuing funding to establish a multi-use outdoor amphitheatre at 3-9 London Street, Lyttelton, New Zealand. In February 2012 much of our port town along with neighboring Christchurch was severly damaged in a series of earthquakes. This is a key piece of realestate in the town centre which was demolished and which we now have the opportunity to utilise for the next two years, through the summer of 2016. We envisage a multi-use community space that can host music, dance, theatre, circus, cinema, talks, meetings - as well as the popular Saturday Grassy Market which will need a temporary home while the work is being completed at the school. We hope to have a balance of ticketed events, free performance and general community access - including, potentially, a temporary enclosed meeting space in the form of a yurt and a mobile community kitchen. We are also currently having conversations with some of the major Christchurch festivals which could utilise the space.

Retro Tests - A Nostalgic Journey

Welcome to the first of a new semi-regular series we’ve called Retro Tests.

We’re going to sample trucks from the great era that spanned the early 70s, through until the early 90s, roughly…there are no hard and fast rules. To some degree we aim to investigate just how far we’ve come (if we’ve come that far at all), but the main thrust is to have a bit of fun, go on a nostalgic trip, enjoy a few laughs, and rekindle some fantastic yarns and memories from a great period in our transport history that’s now gone.

The main delivery media for the Retro Tests will be video, with print as the support – in other words, opposite from the magazine’s main test. We hope you enjoy watching and reading them as much as we do putting them together.

Street Prints Ōtautahi 2017 Full Video

'Street Prints' is the imagery of creating Artistic Footprints in the Streets and 'Ōtautahi' is a Maori name given to the City of Christchurch. PAINT - Pushing Arts In Nz Trust and YMCA Christchurch presents Street Prints Ōtautahi, bought to you by Christchurch City Council and Rātā Foundation. SPŌ is a Street Art Festival bringing together people through the creation of Public Art. This year 10 International and National Artists painted 10 murals throughout Christchurch, Lyttelton and New Brighton. This is a video and the mahi of this project, filmed by the talented Yoshi Travel Films. Exploring New Zealand #6: Christchurch Cathedral Square and Canterbury Museum

When I was preparing this trip to New Zealand, some people told me Christchurch wasn't that good. How wrong they were. Christchurch is a beautifully planned city plenty of interesting things to keep you busy for a couple of days. We took many photos at the Cathedral Square, climbed the Christchurch Cathedral tower, visited the fascinating Canterbury Museum and spent an afternoon at the Orana Wildlife Park.

Cathedral Square, locally known simply as the 'Square', is the geographical centre and heart of Christchurch, New Zealand, where the city's Anglican cathedral, ChristChurch is located. The square was originally intended to be called Ridley Square, after the Protestant martyr Nicholas Ridley, but in Edward Jollie's 1850 plan of central Christchurch it is clearly marked Cathedral Square. Ridley's co-martyrs and colleague bishops, Cranmer and Latimer have Squares named after them, not far distant from Cathedral Square.

Christchurch's landmark heritage buildings have made it through yesterday's damaging 7.1 magnitude earthquake, and hefty aftershocks, relatively unscathed. Five hundred buildings have been affected across Christchurch, including 90 in the central city where there are many heritage and character buildings. Christchurch landmarks to have fared well the earthquake include the Provincial Chambers, the Christchurch Cathedral, the Arts Centre, Christ's College and the Public Trust building and other buildings on Oxford Terrace. One building extensively damaged is the Repertory Theatre in Kilmore St, just months ahead of a major restoration project, a city council spokeswoman said. Staff from Christchurch City Council and the Historic Places Trust have begun inspecting central city buildings alongside the council's building evaluation team, and will also assess buildings elsewhere in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula. A very small number of buildings have suffered extensive damage due to the earthquake, and further assessment will determine whether they can be restored. Many others have suffered minor to moderate damage, and will be fixed in coming weeks. Buildings already strengthened by property owners had generally fared well. We encourage building owners to seek appropriate advice from structural engineers and architects and take steps in the interim to reduce damage and cost by keeping them weather-tight, Urban Design and Heritage team leader Ceciel DelaRue said.

Lyttelton Earthquake Community

The community will not be defeated! Stay strong!
The Summer Street Party was originally planned for today in Lyttelton. The earthquake changed all that and destroyed most of the historic part of the town. But the community stays strong and gets together with live music and free coffee and BBQ.
