Snorkeling in Julien's Wreck (MV Guimaras) (CUT) Sipalay, Negros Occidental, Philippines
???? The MV GUIMARAS rests on top of a reef 3 kilometers from Punta Bulata and is scattered over 3 major sections. Parts of the ship can be seen above sea level during low tides with the bottom depth around 7 meters (25 feet), while the surrounding reef can go as deep as 10-15 meters (30-50 feet). The site is covered with colorful, brilliant corals and is abundant with fish that have made her their new home. It is now classified as a Marine Protected Area under the stewardship of the City of Sipalay.
???? The MV GUIMARAS was a Philippine transport and cargo ship purchased by Compania Maritima in 1964. She was a motor vessel with a Diesel engine built in 1957 by Ateliers & Chantiers de Bretagne. She weighed 3,555 tons and was nearly 100 meters long and 15 meters wide. She ran aground a reef by the island of Anajauan (Turtle Island) one fateful evening in 1971. Her captain, unfortunately, was not able to properly calculate her distance from the reef causing her to pass through shallow waters and crash into hard coral.
