After our 307 km Roadtrip we are right to Map of the
Kristiansand Cannon Museum. this was very cool to see. a fully equipped bunker with a real cannon on top. you can get a guided tour but you can also just walk around yourself. there is a lot of information to read. and you get a good picture of what has happened here. in the summer a train that goes from bunker to bunker. these were then used to bring ammunition, from bunker to bunker. very impressive.

Batterie Vara / Møvik Fort

Welcome to the Kristiansand Cannon Museum, the Vara Battery. Here you will find the world's second larges cannon ever to be mounted on land. The reason why these gigantic cannons came to Møvik was that on the occupation of Norway and Denmark in 1940 the Germans needed to guard the shipping lanes of the Skagerak. 38 cm cannons were planned here at Møvik and across the shortest distance over the Skagerak to Hanstholm in Denmark, some 116 km away.

Møvik Fort

The coastal artillery fortress was named Batterie Vara (MAB 6./502 Vara) by the Germans, when it was built by the German Wehrmacht during World War II. It was named after Major General Felix Vara, who was killed off Alderney in the English channel on 3 November 1941. After the war, the Norwegian Defence named it Møvik fort.



The fort was constructed between 1941 and 1944 by the German navy. Together with four other coastal batteries, it formed a part of the Kristiansand Artillery Group. Together with its sister battery at Hanstholm in Denmark, Møvik Fort was built to obstruct Allied naval forces by blocking the Skagerrak strait and the seaways to Eastern Norway, the Kattegatt Bay, the Baltic Sea and the Baltic region for the allied naval forces. Only a field, ten nautical miles wide, in the Skagerrak could not be covered by the guns of these facilities. This field was therefore mined.

Adolf Hitler worked personally for the barrier strategy and the decision about the fortress in Hanstholm was made in May 1940. In May 1941, two of the guns in Hanstholm were in place and on the Norwegian side preparatory work started.

For a few years after the war, Møvik fort was an operating Norwegian fortress. In 1953 it became part of Kristiansand fortress. On April 20, 1959 the fort was closed and two of the guns and the foundations of the fourth were scrapped

En av verdens største kanoner på land finnes på Møvik fort ved Kristiansand.Tyskerne anla fortet i 1941-1944. Det var meningen at hovedbatteriet skulle bestå av fire gigantiske kanoner, i dag er det kun en kanon som står på fortet. Hele området er sterkt preget av den militære virksomheten både under og etter andre verdenskrig. Fortet er åpent for publikum og anbefales på det varmeste.

I 1941 begynte en tyske krigsmakten å bygge et gigantisk kanonbatteri på Møvik i Kristiansand. Opprinnelig var det planlagt at det skulle stå fire kanoner her, men kun tre ble oppført. I dag står fortsatt den ene kanonen igjen. Dette er verdens nest største kanon montert på land.

Urbex - Exploring WWII Infantry bunker 5 of 6

Exploring the fifth of a total of six of these underground infantry bunkers at Batterie Vara.

These were built to house the infantry troops which defended the WWII german coastal artillery, now better known as Møvik Fort, from attack from the west. All of these 6 bunkers are principally alike. One entrance at each end with a set of tunnels leading into the inner livving area. Unlike most WWII bunkers in this area these are not just caves cut into the stone, but are for the most part lined with bricked walls and painted on the inside.

The bunkers are located just south of Kristiansand in Norway.

This video shows the inside of one of the four 38cm calibre gun bunkers which the Germans positioned at Møvik between 1941 and 1944.

The fortress is located just southwest of the town Kristiansand in the southern parts of Norway.
A site littered with bunkers and installations throughout the area.
