Original Painting by Jean Pierre Cassigneul from M.S. Rau Antiques
A stylish woman sits waterside in this entrancing oil painting by Jean-Pierre Cassigneul. A classic example of his aesthetic, the enchanting piece is a masterpiece of composition and color, exemplifying the appealing sophistication of Cassigneul’s work. His impressive oeuvre is beloved by collectors worldwide who remain transfixed by his uniquely vibrant scenes of elegant women at leisure. His painting In the Rose Garden recently brought $893,000 at a 2014 Sotheby’s auction, ranking him among the five best-selling living French artists in the world.
This work entitled September, exemplifies his elegant compositions of society woman that bring together classical beauty and modern sophistication. His work is reminiscent of Les Nabis, the early 20th-century French Post-Impressionist painters, in its avant-garde color palette and flat spatial compositions. Expressionist painter Kees van Dongen was another important influence on the young Cassigneul, whose portraits resemble van Dongen’s elongated, sharply contoured female forms.
Born in Paris in 1935, Cassigneul studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, holding his first one-man exhibition at the young age of 17. Since that first show, his work has been widely exhibited throughout the world, particularly in Western Europe, the United States, and Japan, where he enjoys an especially devoted following.

Original Painting The Queen of Sheba by Federico Beltrán Masses from M.S. Rau Antiques
La Rena de Saba (The Queen of Sheba) displays the uniquely theatrical and bold style that permeates the distinctive oeuvre of Federico Beltrán-Masses. Simultaneously traditional yet daringly modern, the striking canvases of the Cuban-Spanish master truly defy classification. Highly popular in his day as a portraitist, Beltrán-Masses has enjoyed a revival of interest in recent years, with retrospectives dedicated to his career held in Barcelona in 2011, Paris in 2012, and London in 2012 and 2016.
With his sensuous subjects and dramatic compositions, Beltrán-Masses adeptly captured the escapism that came to characterize postwar society during the Jazz Age. His enigmatic paintings, often filled with bizarre yet beautiful women and eerie subjects, were deeply influenced both by his Hispanic heritage as well as his near obsession with the increasingly glamorous Hollywood culture. The present piece beautifully illustrates this lifelong fascination.
The Queen of Sheba, a woman of great wealth, beauty, and power, is an apt subject for Beltrán-Masses' renowned pictorial fantasies. The artist chose to portray her in the same way as Hollywood - not compelled by reality, but rather by sensuality and exoticism. Beautiful and fantastical, his figures stand in contrast against the nighttime star-studded skies, imbued with his favorite hue that became known as Beltrán Blue.
Born in Cuba and raised in Barcelona, Beltrán-Masses' Spanish roots permeate deeply throughout his work. He learned his craft under the tutelage of the great Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida at the Barcelona Academy of Fine Arts, and quickly earned the support of the cultural elite in Spain, France, England, and, eventually, the United States. In 1920, an entire pavilion was devoted to his work, which received much critical acclaim. The artist's unique figural style set him apart from his contemporaries, whose work was by then firmly entrenched into the stark abstract planes of Cubism. He soon emerged as the leading portraitist of society's elite, a reputation that earned him the friendship of Rudolph Valentino and took him all the way to Hollywood in 1925. Valentino introduced the artist to a crowd of Hollywood elite who soon become both sitters and patrons, including Douglas Fairbanks, Marion Davies, Pola Negri and Joan Crawford. His popularity in the States was so great that a 1929 exhibition of the artist's work in Los Angeles drew over 17,000 paying visitors in just three weeks.
While Beltrán-Masses' painted the portraits of kings, princes, princesses, Hollywood stars and society's elite, his bold, ultra-modern style led him to prefer beautiful women who defied convention. Simultaneously powerful and languidly sensual, the Queen of Sheba proved the perfect subject for this renowned master. Exhibiting the Spanish influence and Beltran Blue palette for which the artist is renowned, this masterpiece of Spanish art is truly a rarity on the market today.

Childe Hassam Impressionist Painting from M.S. Rau Antiques
Childe Hassam was America’s foremost impressionist painter, and this original oil on canvas is arguably among the finest of his works. The sheer grandeur, coveted subject matter, and masterful composition of the piece, entitled Ten Pound Island, easily commands attention. Painted by Hassam at the very peak of his ability, the work was also once part of the distinguished Jack Warner Foundation, a legendary collection of American art. Rarely are works of this caliber, with such impeccable provenance and exhibition history, found on the market today.
Hassam’s work from the late 19th century is considered the best of his oeuvre. He returned to New England in 1889 after a long trip to Paris, where he found himself immersed in and greatly influenced by the impressionist aesthetic. Adapting the modern French style to his own American artistic sensibilities, he developed the unique brand of American impressionism for which he is so celebrated today. One of Hassam's largest canvases from before the turn of the century, Ten Pound Island represents this pivotal moment in the artist's career. While heavily influenced by the French painters of the day, Hassam truly had come into his own stylistically.
Hassam was acclaimed for both his impressionistic landscapes and portraiture, though only rarely did he combine his skill in both genres in the same painting. This work, however, depicts two women - presumably Hassam’s wife, Kathleen Maude Doane, and her sister - in a quintessentially New England setting. The domestic tableau overlooks a view of Ten Pound Island in Gloucester Harbor, one of Hassam's favorite destinations to paint. The artist's skillful attention to the subtleties of light and color, rendered with his famed staccato brushwork, make this work a true technical feat.
The painting also boasts a stellar provenance, having belonged to notable private collections including the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Tanenbaum Collection in New York, and most prestigiously, the famed private collection of Jack Warner. The owner of Gulf States Paper, Jack Warner (1918-2017) was a legend in the American art world. He searched the world for the finest examples of American art and was known to pay any price in order to own the very best. In 2010, he received the prestigious Frederic Edwin Church Award in recognition of his superb collection of American art. That Warner included the present work in his award-winning collection is a testament to its status as an American masterpiece.

The Golden Globes from M.S. Rau Antiques
Globes provide inspiration for the avid traveler, a reminder of our historical discoveries, a learning tool and elegant office décor. M.S. Rau Antiques is pleased to offer for sale a collection of rare and important globes highlighting the golden age of globe design.
Called a cosmotheore, this Dutch Terrestrial Table Globe from the 1700’s is an instrument of exceptional importance. While many globemakers were crafting globes using information that was about 50 years out of date, Dutch cartographer Gerard Valk, drew entirely new plates for his globes based on information received from Paris, making this globe, quite literally, a cutting-edge piece of 18th-century technology. Notice how much of the southern half of the United States is identified as Florida, while California appears as an island off the west coast
This pair of 12 inch celestial and terrestrial globes from 1795 depict the Louisiana territory stretching through the center of the country, while both west and east coasts are drawn with more accuracy. The pair was crafted by Dudley Adams of the renowned London firm Adams of Fleet Street, who included hallmarks of advanced mathematical and cartographic notations. Each globe bears the Dudley Adams seal, noting the firm’s status as “Globe & Math Instrument Makers to the King.”
By the time we arrive in 1821, John Cary and his brother William collaborate to create some of the finest globes in the world. Their expert design and craftsmanship soon allowed them to take command of the English globe-producing market. Both the Louisiana Purchase and the Louis and Clark expeditions have occurred by this time, and the United States begins to look like the country we know today
These rare miniature versions of our planet encapsulate all the wonder that makes our world such an exciting place to explore.
Original Painting by Jean Pierre Cassigneul from M.S. Rau Antiques
Unflinchingly bold and sophisticated, The Emerald Necklace is a beautiful portrait in oil by the celebrated French painter Jean-Pierre Cassigneul. The artist’s unforgettable works are characterized by a strong composition and dramatic color arrangements, and the present work is no exception. Cassigneul's full powers in the handling of color and paint are clearly on display, as well as his remarkable ability to create portraits of intense power and expression.
The work exemplifies Cassigneul's ability to compose a painting that balances the classical conceptions of beauty with a distinctly modern, urbane sophistication. Vibrant colors and striking brushwork lend the piece its contemporary feel, while his sleepy-eyed subject is a classic trope from art history. Together, they form a distinctive style that is uniquely Cassigneul.

Since that first show, his work has been widely exhibited throughout the world, particularly in Western Europe, the United States, and Japan, where he enjoys an especially devoted following.

Pierre Auguste Renoir Masterpieces at M.S. Rau Antiques
Perhaps one of the best loved Impressionists of all time, Pierre-Auguste Renoir is famous for his extraordinary canvases. Born in Limoges, France, Renoir began his career as an apprentice to a painter of porcelain wares then moved to Paris at the age of 21 enrolling at the prestigious E´cole des Beaux Arts. It was here, while studying under Charles Gleyre, that Renoir met Claude Monet and several other classmates who would later establish the French Impressionist group.
Working closely with Monet, Renoir began experimenting with the portrayal of light and its effect on his canvases. The youngest member of the Impressionist movement, an astute Renoir recognized how a subject was constantly changing due to the dynamic effects of light on color. Capturing a particular moment in time, or an impression, rather than a subjective scene, was central to the group's philosophy, which became the most important artistic phenomenon of the 19th century.

STORYLINE:
Antique shop-owners in New Orleans are being forced to throw priceless stock away, after much of it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
Peter Whisnant and partner Felix Landry, who own Whisnant Galleries in the city's French Quarter, filled 13 rubbish containers with mouldy books, ruined furniture and torn maps and paintings.
It's a pretty empty feeling inside anytime you have something destroyed that was beautiful and cared for for two hundred years, said Whisnant.
The pair originally moved to New Orleans from Mississippi after their shop there was wiped out by Hurricane Camille in 1969.
When Katrina struck the US's Gulf states, they decided to stay and ride out the storm with their families in the apartment above the shop.
But the hurricane winds blew the roof off their four storey shop and restoration warehouse, scattering centuries old European and Colonial antiques.
They were unable to save much of their stock.
New Orleans is known for being one of the top antique markets in the US, but many shop-owners plan to move elsewhere.
The fear of new weather patterns, and the lack of tourists are forcing many to relocate.
But Whisnant and Landry say they are planning to remain in the French Quarter.
Hurricane Katrina ploughed into the US Gulf Coast on 29 August killing more than 1,200 people.
