海上荟 Shanghai Gallery Selection
We are pleased to announce the contemporary art exhibition 海上荟 Shanghai Gallery Selection will be held by 17 local galleries, to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC).
In a city where galleries and exhibitions are flourishing, almost every year sees the construction of a new museum, and people have more and more opportunities to approach art, like the biennale once every other year, or art fairs involving many venues.
In that context, this exhibition aims particularly at lovers of contemporary art. Galleries most active in the contemporary art scene will display a unique, impressive and powerful show.
Those who gathered in this 海上荟 Shanghai Gallery Selection have in common their international involvement, curation capacities, and their readiness to experiment, and to always stand on the forefront, together with artists of their time.
This exhibition has no special theme. However, by bringing together artists and pieces proudly endorsed by the top galleries in Shanghai, it promises to be the place to feel most vibrantly the liveliness of Shanghai's contemporary art scene.

Creative Thought in Modern China: The Social Impact
While the imperative to conform is often seen as dominant in Chinese society, creative expression among Chinese artists and its growing middle class is pushing the boundaries of social conformity, often causing tension between the rush to modernity and tradition. We are very pleased to present three observers of the Chinese art scene to hear their views on how creative thinking is impacting modern China. As China’s leaders grapple with economic imperatives that demand more creative thinking in the work force, and as increasing numbers of Chinese students flock to western-style learning institutions, should we see Chinese artists and creative class as a harbinger of things to come?

10.000 Moving Cities – Same but Different, Offline Version, PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai
Interactive multi screen installation

10.000 Moving Cities – Same but Different deals with globalized cities as changing ‘Non-Places’ in terms of Marc Augé. On a touchscreen, visitors can choose one out 21 different cities. For each city, 13 different videos are playing synchronized on 13 large LED screens including 13 sound sources. The videos are showing screen capturing’s of the 10.000 Moving Cities – Same but Different virtual reality application. Visitor discovers local, cultural, and linguistic differences among the cities, as well as similarities. The artwork explores how globalization creates places without a local identity – as described in Marc Augé’s essay Non-Lieux.

Informal Solutions
(Read Below)
I AM NEITHER AN ART CRITIC NOR A FILMMAKER. I am just an Artist who likes other art. But of course, I am trying to do my best and make videos that are visually pleasing and from artistic value.
This video represents my visit to and interpretation of the exhibition Informal Solutions by German Photographer Michael Wolf at M97 in Shanghai on October 2016.
In a minimalist fashion, he presented the many manifestations of culture and life in Hong Kong’s back alley, where spaces are utilized in the most imaginative and unexpected ways. Through his observing eyes, objects captured in photographs appear to transcend from their humble origin to magnificent works of urban installation art. It seems inevitable that city authorities will one day sanitize the creative chaos in Hong Kong’s back alleys. But until then, we share the joy and jubilation about the people’s creativity and inventiveness. The exhibition features photographs, video loops, and artifacts collected by himself. I was inspired by his work and captured the gallery's surroundings, as they were quite similar - so I tried to create a similar vibe and catch the experience on this cloudy day in Shanghai.
I also wrote an article about the exhibition, you can find it on my website:
