MANTA Sail Training Centre
MANTA Sail Training Centre: Vietnam's first and only sailing school, near the beautiful fishing village of Mui Ne. Sail trained fishermen help develop a new national sport, servicing Vietnam's growing watersports and tourism industries, addressing 5 of 8 Millennium Development Goals while helping to switch engine to wind power and create Marine Protected Areas. International registration of Vietnam's sailing federation (September, 2011) is expected in November, 2011: To allow Vietnam higher levels of training and to enter athletes abroad and host international events by international rules. SAIGON STAR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL helps MANTA deliver 17 UN SDGs
RATIONALE:
• The world is 95% water, 71% ocean, and rising; with human population pressures on land, increasing.
• Significant risks to the ocean are pollution, over-fishing (with loss of biodiversity), and climate change.
• Vietnamese fishermen are arguably the most vulnerable, lowest caste, often unschooled Vietnamese community, with alternative livelihoods yet to be defined.
• Vietnam’s 4,000+km coastline is globally ranked the fifth most threatened coastline to climate change.
• Vietnam has horrific sea-history, no operational coastguard, and 90% of Vietnamese children cannot swim.
• National pride can be a stronger motivation than marine conservation.
• Water-sports can help re-balance Vietnam's horrific sea history.
• Water-sports safety areas can double as Marine Protected Areas.
• Water-sports have many benefits for human and environmental health.
MANTA’S SCALE-ABLE CIRCULAR MODEL/SOCIAL ENTERPRISE:
MANTA, Vietnam’s first and only sail training centre:
• Employs fishermen, taking them off fossil-fuel, off over-fishing, off endangered habitats, translating their existing ocean skills into water-sports, to help service Vietnam’s growing industries of Water-sports and Tourism.
• Switches fossil fuel use to wind and muscle/paddle power, following World Sailing guidelines, modified for Vietnam (with greater safety and shorter training time, as coaches are always with students and recommended coach-student ratios are halved).
• Trains fishermen as national coaches, athletes and managers (and drew Vietnam’s national plan for Ministry, on an International Olympic Committee scholarship, after connecting Vietnam to World Sailing, and IOC funding for national training [2009-12]).
• In-turn, sail trained fishermen train large groups of school children water-sports and climate action survival skills (in line with international curricula).
• In-turn, children raise awareness, connection/impact while delivering 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, simultaneously sustaining the fishermen’s new livelihood, the national team and MANTA’s circular model!

☼ MANTA, a project and not-for-profit Vietnamese company, takes fishermen off endangered marine habitats, off over-fishing and off motorized boats, into water-sports, using their existing ocean skills, to help marine stocks grow and to help climate change mitigation and adaptation, while servicing Vietnam’s growing industries of tourism and water-sports.
☼ Sail trained Vietnamese fishermen now run water-sports at MANTA, Vietnam’s 1st (and only) dinghy sail training centre, teaching water-sports and climate change survival skills, plus ocean and energy awareness.
☼ School and corporate groups help sustain MANTA’s alternative livelihood for fishermen in watersports, by their participation to learn watersports and climate change survival skills, with their community service credits. Twelve large groups are needed each year, for the UNFCCC case study to be sustainable.

Sail-trained Vietnamese fishermen teach 90 ISHCMC children water-sports and climate change survival
MANTA a project and Not-for-profit takes Vietnamese fishermen off overfishing and endangered marine habitats, transferring their existing ocean skills to water-sports.
In turn, sail-trained Vietnamese fishermen teach large groups of children or corporates water-sports and climate change survival skills.
The presence of the children helps sustain alternative livelihoods, for fishermen in water-sports, tallying, with their community service core curriculum components. As MANTA is aligned with International Baccalaureate and IGCSE curricula.
Tried and tested on children the programme is now rolled out to corporations for their Corporate-Social-Environmental Responsibility (CSER) requirements and team building.
In contrast to fossil fuel power, water-sports are wind powered, wave powered, paddle powered, hand powered, and individual and/or team powered. Water-sports include dinghy sailing, Stand-Up-Paddling, coracling, water-rescue and seamanship.
