Can a contemporary art mecca anchor this once-industrial town?
The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, known as MASS MoCA, has become one of America’s largest exhibition spaces for modern creativity, as well as a case study in reviving old industrial towns. Jeffrey Brown reports on the museum’s decision to embrace the town’s industrial past, and whether replacing manufacturing with art and culture is sufficient to keep North Adams alive.

Repurposing Old Mill Buildings: The Mass MoCA Success Story | Connecting Point | May 2, 2019
With power readily available from its flowing streams and rivers, Berkshire County was once an ideal place to start woolen, paper, iron, and glass mills. But once that industry left the region, towns were left with empty, mammoth, hulking structures lining the streets and river banks -- abandoned mills. Some have since found new life, while others were not as fortunate. Producer Dave Fraser looks at one of the greatest mill revitalization success stories: The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) in North Adams.

We organized 3 exciting artist residencies for 4th graders from the North Adams Public Schools and the North Berkshire School Union.

Adams Hometown Market Opens in Former Adams Big Y | Connecting Point | Mar. 19, 2019
When Big Y announced in February that they would be closing their Myrtle Street location in Adams, Massachusetts after 35 years, it sent shock waves through the community. Not only did it leave roughly 90 employees without a job, it left the people of the town without a place to buy groceries. For the elderly and those who travel by foot, the closing created a hardship rather than an inconvenience. But the bad news was short-lived, as a new grocer—Adams Hometown Market—has quickly moved in to take over. Connecting Point’s Brian Sullivan has the story.

Hoosac Range (North Adams MA): Berkshire Natural Resources Council
Native Americans first used the Mohawk Trail (now Route 2) to travel through the northern Berkshires between the Hudson and Connecticut rivers. Today a drive east 4.5 miles on Route 2 from North Adams through the “Hairpin Turn” to the top of the ridge brings you to a unique place known as “the Western Summit.” Just beyond the Wigwam cabins on the same side of the road is a large parking area where a BNRC welcome sign and an information kiosk mark the entrance to the trail.
With unparalleled views from the top of Route 2, entrepreneurs once made this area a popular tourist stop, with a gift shop and cabins. A tall viewing tower meant visitors could climb up to survey New York, Vermont, MountGreylock, the Taconics, and the surrounding state forests. The Wigwam gift shop and several of the cabins, which are privately owned, remain, but are closed.
Events That Rocked the Region: The Closing of Sprague Electric | Connecting Point | June 4, 2018
There are times in our lives that we will never forget: moments that changed our world, shaped who we are, and after they happened, things were never the same again. They are the Events that Rocked the Region.
In the final installment of our series, we look at the closing of Sprague Electric, one of the largest employers in the city of North Adams, in 1985. While its closure devastated the Northern Berkshire economy, out of its ashes came Mass MoCA—one of the largest contemporary art museums in the country, and a new and different economy. Carrie Saldo brings us the story.
