Bideford is a historic port town on the estuary of the River Torridge in north Devon, south-west England. Bideford is the main town of the Torridge local government district. Bideford is served by the A39 Atlantic Highway and A386 roads.
A ferry operates between Bideford quay and Lundy Island, which lies about 22 miles (35 km) away in the Bristol Channel. The same ship, the MS Oldenburg, also provides evening cruises from Bideford along the River Torridge but in the downstream direction only as it is too big to pass under the Bideford Long Bridge.
The Bideford, Westward Ho! and Appledore Railway was an unusual and short-lived railway built entirely on this peninsula with no direct connection to the rest of the British railway network. The locomotives were fitted with skirts to protect pedestrians, as at one point the line ran along the quay at Bideford.
Lundy is the largest island in the Bristol Channel. It lies 12 miles (19 km) off the coast of Devon, England, in the district of Torridge, about a third of the distance across the channel from Devon, England to South Wales. Lundy gives its name to a British sea area and is one of the islands of England. Lundy has been designated by Natural England as national character area 159, one of England's natural regions. Lundy was granted to the Knights Templar by Henry II in 1160. The Templars were a major international maritime force at this time, with interests in North Devon, and almost certainly an important port at Bideford or on the River Taw in Barnstaple.
The town of Bideford has grown to cover land on both sides of the River Torridge; the area located east of the river is known as East-the-Water, also known as Shamwickshire to locals. Much of the land that has been built on in recent years is drained marshland.

Charles Kingsley's description of Bideford as The Little White Town, which slopes upward from its broad river tide paints a picturesque one hundred & fifty year old image of the town that has not changed much to the present day.
In fact, if you approach this historic town from East-the-Water you can easily imagine you are being transported back to a time when life wasn't so hectic, and when Bideford was still one of the largest ports and market towns in the country.
This is because many of the houses are still painted white with small cobbled paths and walkways that weave their way in between the houses as they did in Charles Kingsley's day. Bideford's ancient and iconic long bridge still stands proud, spanning the river Torridge and providing a link between the two sides of the town as it has for hundreds of years.
However, Bideford is now definitely in the 21st century with its new Torridge Bridge, its recently enhanced quay area, excellent shopping, a variety of restaurants, and the lively pubs & themed bars where you can eat in or go alfresco.
Then there are the theme parks like The Big Sheep & Atlantis Adventure, The Milky Way and so much more, which adds up to make Bideford a great place to stay in or visit.
So, whether you're travelling on your own, as a couple, in a group or a family, Bideford has a wealth of exciting (or sedate) options that will cater for everyone's pace of life.
You could enjoy a stroll around the town exploring the narrow streets on Bideford's heritage trail and visit the brightly coloured shops along the way, selling local fudge, arts & crafts and fresh local produce.
Or for those of you who enjoy some present day retail therapy, you could pay a visit to the Atlantic Village Shopping Outlet where you can purchase the latest designer clothing, sportswear, household goods and much more.
If you are feeling energetic, you could take a cycle ride or a walk on the Tarka Trail and stop for a spot of lunch and a beer at one of the many traditional pubs along the route, often supplied by acclaimed micro-breweries in the local area.
Alternatively, you could visit the Burton Art Gallery with its Tourist Information Centre, view the various artists' work on display, or peruse the free museum. Then walk around Victoria Park with its excellent colourful floral displays. You could also check out the Kathleen & May, an historic schooner that's harboured at the Brunswick Wharf, just across from Bideford quay. Take a trip to Lundy Island on the MS Oldenburg, the ferry that regularly makes the 14-mile journey to the island and back. This will enable you to see Bideford, Lundy and the surrounding area from a very different perspective.
Or, you could take a swim, surf or kite buggy at Westward Ho!, visit the amusement arcades, or walk along an incredible three-mile stretch of beach which holds blue flag status that's only a five-minute drive from Bideford Town centre.

Severe UK Storm 5th February 2014 hits coast at Hartland, North Devon
This video was taken when a huge and damaging storm hit the UK on the morning of 5th Feb 2014 on the North West Devon coast, just north of Cornwall, facing out towards the Atlantic Ocean, part of historically on of the deadliest 5 mile lengths of coastline in the world for ship wrecks. The first footage is at Hartland Point, at the very north-west point of Devon where the Atlantic passes between it and Lundy Island and into the Bristol Channel, with very distinct strong current pathways seen from the cliffs on even calm days. From the reports of giant swell from the Atlantic and the way the ocean is squeezed into the Bristol Channel I had hoped to see waves lashing up and over the lighthouse but in the end it wasn't quiet as dramatic as that, looking like the waves braked earlier, however still some good video (despite it feeling very dangerous perched near the cliff edge on a narrow, slippy muddy path in gale force winds and rain filming it!). The wind distorted the mic on the video so much I take the sound off here and just let the Littermouth track 'Sea is She' play.
I then moved on down the coast to Hartland Quay, famous for it's Wreckers Inn and it's museum dedicated to ship wrecks (get the idea of a theme going on down here!?). Here the sea was very dramatic with waves crashing around the Quay. Sometimes in shots out to sea it's hard to determine the size of waves but if you look at the shots with the rocky peninsula outcrop by the Quay you'll see a fence and people walking by it, I deliberately put that clip in to give you scale. I'd estimate looking at the people that the waves were easily 6m high in places and the spray and crashing water going up between 20-30m, possibly more.
Excuse water getting on the lens in places, I can't see a way of filming close into rough seas and strong winds without spray getting on there. I was constantly cleaning. the other problem was keeping the camera still. I was stood battling gales force winds, throwing me about in places and shaking the tripod.
The music is from a local based band called Littermouth. they are based north of Bude and provided a very appropriate track called 'Sea is She', a sort of reflection of a love affair with the sea ...she had a bit of a lovers tiff today though!

SS Freshspring moves to Bideford - short version
The ex RFA SS 'Freshspring' was moved from Newnham on the river severn to Bideford - via Sharpness dry dock in 2016. This short video covers that journey, undertaken so that the ship can be refurbished whilst alongside at Bideford, which is taking place right now. Music supplied by AKM music. akmmusic.co.uk

The steam ship Freshspring, a Royal Fleet Auxiliary water carrier of 1946, having been sold off in 1979 had eventually ended up at Newnham on the river Severn, where for 24 years she was really just rusting away.
That is until in 2016 she was moved to Bideford in Devon via Sharpness dry dock, for refurbishment by the Steam Ship Freshspring Society. The move down the river Severn and then the Bristol channel was by tug and this is part one of that journey: From Newnham to Sharpness.
