The Biraja Temple, or Girija Kshetra, is a historic Hindu temple located in Jajpur (about 125 kilometres (78 mi) north of Bhubaneswar), Odisha, India. The present temple was built during the 13th century. The principal idol is Devi Durga, who is worshiped as Viraja (Girija), and the temple gave Jajpur the nicknames Viraja Kshetra and Biraja Peetha. The Durga idol has two hands (dwibhuja), spearing the chest of Mahishasura with one hand and pulling his tail with the other. One of her feet is on a lion, and the other is on Mahishasura's chest. Mahishasura is depicted as a water buffalo. The idol's crown features Ganesha, a crescent moon and a lingam. The temple covers a large area, and has several shrines to Shiva and other deities. According to the Skanda Purana it cleanses pilgrims, and it is called the Viraja or the Biraja kshetra. Jajpur is believed to have about one crore of Shiva lingams.

Maa Biraja Temple
This temple is also called Biraja Devi or Girija Devi temple. It is one of 51 shakthi pentagrams and it is where Sati's navel fell. The temple was built in 13th century.
Jajpur town has grown around temples. The main temple is that of Birajadevi(biraja mandir). Mounted on a lion she carries a spear with one arm and holds the tail of Mahishasur with the other. Festivals are held at Durga Puja & Kali Puja.
Jajpur is another Hindu pilgrimage. It was named after king Jajati Keshari. In course of time this became Jajpur. It was once the capital of Orissa. Its distance from Calcutta 337 km, Cuttack is another 72 km and Bhubaneswar 100 km more. Navi gaya is found here inside the temple. The materials put in the Navi Gaya is supposed to go to Samudra(Sea). Car festival is also seen here during Durga Puja.The murti of maa birja is famous as it is a dwei bhuja mahisha mardini rupa.

Maa Biraja devi is one of the 18 shaktipeethas. This place Odhyana peetham is also called as Nabhi Gaya. Nabhi (Navel) of Sati devi fell .
When Lord Vishnu kílled Gayasura by performing Yagna on his heart, Gayasuras feet were in Pda Gaya (Pithapuram), Navel in Nabhi Gaya (Oddhyana peetha) and head at Siro Gaya (Gaya). These three places are important for performing Shraddha Karmas.
Brahma Kund (A holy place where Brahma did Yagna) is also present near temple. This pond also considered as Nabhi kund.
There is a temple for Sweta Varaha swamy near this temple.
Jagannadh temple complex present on other sides of the bank of Vaitarini river.
Siddheshwar temple is one of the oldest temple of Lord Shiva in Jajpur district.
