Mabalingwe:
Mabalingwe is a nature reserve about 112km north of Pretoria, South Africa, and is home to Africa's Big 5. It has existed since 1972 and is spread out over more than 12 500 hectares of unspoilt bushveld, nestled in the shadow of the majestic Waterberg Mountains. Mabalingwe is home to not only Kudu, Impala, Tsessebe, Zebra, Warthogs, Hippopotimi, Ostriche and Girrafe but also Africa's Big Five. These are the African Lion, African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, African Leaopard and White/Black Rhino.
The African Lion:
Panthera Leo, the african lion, is one of the four big cats. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Until about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. The lion has since seen a major population decline during the second half of the 20th century. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Lions live for about 10 to 14 years in the wild, but can live longer in captivity where they can reach 20 years of age. In the wild, males seldom live longer than 10 years, as injuries sustained from continual fighting with rival males greatly reduce their longevity. They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together. Sleeping mainly during the day, lions are primarily nocturnal in nature. The male lion is easily recognised by its mane, and its face is one of the most widely recognised animal symbols in human culture.
