What To Do In SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA l CRUISE VLOG l Ep. 18
Time for us to get off the Norwegian Gem in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and get on our bus for our shore excursion! I booked this tour through Norwegian Cruise Line though this tour is offered through most cruise lines! The tour is called, HEART OF THE ISLAND and here is the tour description from NCL's website:
“Ciad Mile Failte” - a hundred thousand welcomes await you! Nova Scotia is Latin for New Scotland and nowhere is this more evident than on Cape Breton Island. This picturesque excursion takes you to the very heart of the island. You’ll see some of the Island's most dynamic scenery, weaving a route through rugged countryside, touching the shores of the famous Bras d'Or Lakes. Known as the Great Inland Sea, as the lakes are salt water, this region is a major breeding ground for bald eagles and other wildlife.
As your tour progresses, you'll stop at the center of Cape Breton Island, Hectors' Point, Iona and visit the Nova Scotia Highland Village, a 50 acre historical site overlooking the Bras d'Or Lakes. Take a journey through 180 years of Cape Breton’s Scottish architecture, hosted by costumed staff, trained in conversational Gaelic and local history. Here, you’ll view a full size replica of a Scottish Blackhouse, a one room structure occupied by the first Scottish settlers in the region and the only one of its kind in North America. A hilltop panoramic view offers a beautiful blend of land, sky and water. Enjoy tea or coffee and oatcakes before returning to your ship.”
As always, make sure to watch in HD for the best video quality! Hope you enjoy! :)

Mabou Coal Mines Lookoff
I cut myself shaving that morning. It's not a cold sore lol. Also the phone mirror imaged the video, so the actual live view is reversed. The trail system at Mabou is beautiful, but complex, with a few dangerous spots. If you bring small children, definitely keep them under control due to cliffs. Also, do purchase a trail map at the local grocery store before going out there, in case you choose to try any of the other trails. Also bring the other usual suspects like compass, gps, flashlight, fire tools, clothing, and especially water.

Liscomb River Trail - Hiking in Nova Scotia
Right before the fall color peak got passed us, decided to take the long drive up the Eastern shore towards Liscomb Lodge to hike a challenging but scenic trail; Liscomb River trail.
While it is a loop trail, the trail has two trailheads. One at the main entrance to the Liscomb Lodge. The other trail head is several hundred meters down the road on the other wise of the river.
We opted to hike to the main money shot of the trail, the suspension bridge and turn back. It still ended up being a 8km hike, but my fur buddy didn't like crossing the bridge.
So starting out from the main parking lot, we hiked behind the cabins onto the trail following the river. the trail is well defined and groomed as we approached the scenic views of crooked falls and the lookout.
Past that point, the trail often looks like a goat path and with the terrain suddenly increasing in difficulty. We crossed a stream via a small footbridge and continued along the river.
There are several pools that allow salmon to spawn up river. It was until the halfway point that we saw the fish ladder on one side and the bridge on the other.
By climbing up to the bridge, we saw the gorge and the fantastic view looking down river. We could have continued the loop, but as expected my fur buddy didn't want to cross the bridge. That's ok, we'll be back.

Paragliding in Cape Breton, on 19th August, 2012. Winds 20 km south/south west. 27 minute flight with rain squalls in the area. Enjoyable flight and had to land to avoid a rain shower coming in my direction. Music Midnight Showers by Kavin Hoo and others.

Uisage Ban Falls Cape Breton - Hiking in Nova Scotia
I teamed up with Expedia Canada to check out some great day hiking spots which also happened to be near some of the local craft breweries that are sprinkled across Nova Scotia.
** GET THE GEAR ON AMAZON**
With the rugged coastline and killer views around Nova Scotia, exploring waterfalls within a day hike is one of those little pleasures since the exploration level is set to high. So with my maps in hand, I narrowed my waterfall search to Baddeck, Cape Breton.
Uisage Ban Falls Provincial Park is located at the outer edge of the famous Cape Breton Highlands, barely a 20 minute drive from main street Baddeck. While there are plenty of things to do in Halifax, for this day hike, I packed up the car and my four legged buddy (Keji the black lab) and left Halifax for the 3 ½ hour drive to the trailhead.
Uisage Ban Falls or “OUSKA-BAN” falls is part of the gaelic tradition that you will notice along the highway as soon as you cross step off the mainland via Canso Causeway and follow the Trans-Canada Highway to Exit 9. You don’t really need your GPS navigation to find this day-use park, It’s a straight line as soon as take the exit and turn left. And besides, cell service will become spotty as you start the climb up.
A small parking lot next to the trailhead makes it easy to load out and get started. A few picnic tables a pit toilets are within reach. I arrived after some heavy overnight showers, so not only was the scenery was still overcast and cool, the falls should be fairly noisy.
There are two trails to explore within the park: the quick out & back to the falls and a longer loop trail along the North Branch Baddeck River. My hiking buddy and I decided on doing both trails which would be almost six kilometers of total hiking. We followed the path along the River Trail where all you could hear is the water running down its course. The spruce & pine forest slowly changed to a mixed hardwood. Visiting the park during the fall colours season would be amazing.
Once we finished our loop, the trail connected about ⅔ of the way up the Falls Trail. At this point we were following Falls Brook and a short 400m hike to the granite gorge. As we got closer, the terrain shifted from the easy gravel trail to rugged footpath as we made our way across rocks and tree roots.
But the hike created a thirst that my water bottle couldn’t quench. Only 25 minutes away was one of the many craft breweries that have been sprouting across Nova Scotia. We set our navigation for Big Spruce in Nyanza.
Literally 30 seconds off the main highway, we pulled in and in very short order was in the tasting room with a sample tray of their latest brews. From the tasting room, I looked out towards the Bras d’Or Lake. From here, I noticed my cell had regained its contact to the world and my notifications started coming in. Big Spruce is a certified organic brewery and farm, growing their own hops. This was a good mellow session to get caught up and upload some pics from the hike.
My sample tray had the following beers that day, they rotate a healthy selection to sample or fill up a growler or smaller yapper:
Regatta Red - Irish Red Ale - 4.8%
This was a smooth beer, the malt and hops balanced out well.
Kitchen Party - Pale Ale - 5.9%
A pretty bitter ale, as you get both citrus and pine. This one had a great aroma.
Cerberus - American IPA - 7%
Now this was a nice organic collaboration brew with two other breweries. The aroma and decidedly very hoppy beer with a smooth finish was my favourite.
Bitter Get’Er - India Black IPA - 6.8%
This one is for those who like the coffee, malt flavours and with a good smack of hops.
With my visit to Big Spruce done, we were back on the road so that we would arrive at Halifax around supper time.
