Mabry Mill - Beautiful Spot on Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia
Mabry Mill is one of my favorite stops on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Southern Virginia. It's an old gristmill and sawmill near an area called Meadows of Dan. There's the mill, lots of displays about Appalachian life, an old log home, and lots of friendly folks to explain what you are seeing. There's a nice restroom in the little restaurant / gift store. Get off the parkway at Meadows of Dan to visit some nice homespun stores, and Nancy's Candy Store is a real treat too. Really worth a visit.

This was taken on January 10, 2015 when it was 11 degrees. This is a historical mill that still functions and has demonstrations during the summer.
Mabry Mill September 2013 - Meadows of Dan, VA
I've been all up and and down the Blue Ridge Parkway. I've stopped at Hanging Rock, Chimney Rock, and Blowing Rock, but this was my first time at Mabry Mill. It was cool. Completed in 1910, it worked as a gristmill and included a lathe, a planer, and a jigsaw in the front. As you can see, it still works today and makes this heavenly sound which quiets every other sound in my A.D.D. brain. Love it.

Mabry Mill was originally built by Edwin Boston Mabry (1867-1936). He began it in 1903 initially as a wheelwright and blacksmith shop, and eventually it became a saw mill and by then 1905 a gristmill. The gristmill was operated by Mr. Mabry until the 1930s.
Now, Mabry Mill is one of the most photographed places in the United States, not to mention one of the most popular attractions on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The mill is run by the National Park Service, and along the grounds are walking trails with live exhibits during the summer and fall months which reflect various aspects of the pioneer mountain lifestyle. Exhibitors dress in the attire of the times. Demonstrations on local crafts, music, dancing, shoe making, soap making, running a whiskey still will have the visitor feel like they have just stepped back into time.
At the historic, operational water-powered grist mill visitors can see a demonstration of the milling process and can even purchase ground grits, buckwheat flour and cornmeal to take home. Of course, the preferred method is to enjoy these local delicacies prepared by the experts at the Mabry Mill Restaurant.
However, as interesting as it is to see how this pioneer milling process worked, it is probably the serene beauty of the mill location that draws people to this stop. Each year several hundred thousand visitors come to photograph the beautifully restored mill which sits by a picturesque pond and is framed by mountain foliage. Resident ducks add their touch to the soothing scene. It is no wonder that Mabry Mill shows up in more tourist photo remembrances that any other parkway destination.
A trip to Mabry Mill offers many intriguing exhibits that are sure to entertain visitors of all ages. Before leaving, be sure to visit Mabry Mills gift store to find that treasured handmade mountain craft.

Mabry Mill, Virginia
We stopped by Mabry Mill today on our way from breakfast in Virginia to back home to North Carolina. Nadia is saying: We are at the Mabry Mill (she couldn't exactly remember the name of the Mill). People are dancing over there, and I'm sitting here on the bench and looking at the trees.

Honda CBR250R - Tuggles Gap Trip (Rte 8, Blue Ridge Parkway, Rocky Knob, Mabry Mill, Meadows of Dan)
I took a beautiful fall motorcycle ride on my 2012 Honda CBR250R along Route 8 North to Tuggles Gap, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Rocky Knob, Mabry Mill, Meadows of Dan, Stuart, VA, Patrick Springs, Spencer, Horsepasture, and Martinsville, VA. The leaves were beginning to change and the Parkway was open after the Federal furloughs had recently ended. The recently installed Two Brothers M-2 Carbon Fiber full exhaust system sounded great and gave the bike a bit more horsepower and torque. The roundtrip of 240 miles from my home in NC was tiring but worth it as fall is my favorite time of year and the weather worked out perfect.

Lover's Leap Wayside - Meadows of Dan Virginia - 2.7K video
We pull over at Lover's Leap Wayside near Meadows of Dan, Va to shoot this awesome view. At this point we're probably only 5 miles or so off the Blue Ridge Parkway headed toward Stuart, VA. I shot this in 2.7K video with a GoPro Hero3 - no editing, just uploaded straight from the camera.

Family Fun in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia
Short video showing some of our fun family day trip in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southern Virginia. This is a route that we do multiple times per year.
Stop 1 usually involves a stop at the Lover's Leap overlook near Vesta, VA, before continuing on to some of the interesting country stores of Meadows of Dan. A stop of Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway is mandatory! Stop 2 is a dozen miles north of the mill, continuing along the Parkway to the Buffalo Mountain Overlook, where a short hike along the Rockcastle Creek Gorge Trail takes us to the summit of Rocky Knob. This is the high point for Patrick County at 3572 feet above sea level. Our final stop is always the town of Floyd, Virginia. A great place for some coffee or a full meal, and no visit to Floyd is complete without stopping in at the Floyd Country Store for great Bluegrass and Old Time music.
