Machrihanish Golf Club, Campbeltown, Scotland
Machrihanish Golf Club, Campbeltown, Scotland - Machrihanish Golf Club is located in Argyll, Scotland, on the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre between the Isle of Arran and the Hebrides. The club was formed in 1876 with ten holes. In 1879, it was “re established” when Old Tom Morris expanded it to eighteen holes including the famous first where your opening tee shot must carry across a corner of the Atlantic Ocean! The 6,462 yard par 70 plays fast and firm through larger than normal Scottish dunes to greens some like punchbowls, some like plateaus. Otherwise, Machrihanish is one of the most natural links in the game. Its fairways pitch and roll, the views it offers are striking. The only less than loving reflection you'd ever hear about this consistently ranked world top 100 course is its location on the Mull of Kintyre. The choices used to be a 3 hour road trip (from heaven, the scenery is spectacular the entire way) or a 40 minute flight. Now there's a third travel option and it is the ticket. The Kintyre Express is a speed boat ferry that crosses the Firth of Clyde with 12 passengers in just over an hour. This exposed links course is one of the finest hidden gems in the British Isles and should not be overlooked on your next trip to Scotland.

Old Photographs Machrihanish Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Machrihanish village in Argyll, on the west coast. It is a short distance north of the tip of the Mull of Kintyre, which faces out towards Ireland and the Atlantic. Machrihanish has a classic links golf course designed by Old Tom Morris from St Andrews, Fife, with views towards the islands of Gigha, Islay and Jura. The Kintyre Way long distance walking footpath passes through the village from Campbeltown and carries on south towards the Scottish Wildlife Trust's Largiebaan Reserve. Coal was mined near the village; the Machrihanish Coalfield was one of Britain's smallest coalfields. Reginald Aubrey Fessenden built a radio transmitting station with a 400 foot high mast here in 1905 to transmit Wireless Telegraphy to a similar station at Brant Rock in Massachusetts, United States. An exchange of messages took place on 1 January 1906 but the mast blew down in a gale on 5 December 1906 and was never rebuilt. Machrihanish railway station opened in 1906 and finally closed in 1932. Weather data is collected from Machrihanish and broadcast in the Shipping Forecast. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

MACC Challenge at Machrihanish Airbase
What a fantastic day it was for the MACC Challenge!!
Everyone involved on the day should be really proud of themselves.
I hope this has raised lot's of cash for the Dialysis in Campbeltown campaign and possibly becomes an annual event for the future.
I had great fun flying the Quadcopter around the course and following the brave competitors through the obstacles.
So I'd like to thank the organisers for allowing me to fly & film with the quadcopter, I only wished I had a few more batteries so I could have flown for longer!
Anyway I hope you all enjoy the video, it's my first proper attempt to film an event so I am still learning, and I also have to apologise for the cheesy music in the backround!!

Machrihanish Dunes - The Way Golf Began
More than 130 years ago, Old Tom Morris recognized the potential for great golf here in this rugged, romantic corner of Scotland. The site of Machrihanish Dunes featured 23 natural holes, defined as those which fit so well into the natural landscape prior to construction that only minimal effort is required to ready them for play in terms of grading and shaping work.
Of the roughly 275 acres on which the course sits, just seven were disturbed during the construction of the course. Only tees and greens were shaped. The course's routing, as well as positioning of tees and greens, was dictated by the lay of the land and presence of several endangered species of flora and fauna. The course flows effortlessly to, from and along the sea, inviting you to step back in time to the days when Old Tom Morris laid out Machrihanish Golf Club.
Machrihanish Bay Before it is Destroyed for a Generation.avi
This is a video of Machrihanish Bay on a November morning. A beautiful resource and asset for the whole of Kintyre - not just for the profit of one company. A home to thousands of species of flora and fauna now under threat from the imposition of the closest inshore windfarm in Britain. 105 immense turbines and all the supporting infrastructure. Too Big Too Close Too Damaging and most certainly not part of any truly sustainable solution....
