Funeral of LTGEN Sir Stanley Savige - Guard of Honour by the 5th BN Victorian Scottish Regiment 1954
Sir Stanley George Savige (1890-1954), soldier, army officer and founder of Legacy, was born in June 1890 at Morwell, Victoria, serving in both the First and Second World Wars.
He firstly enlisted before being commissioned after the Gallipoli Campaign. On the Wester Front, he was twice recommended for the Military Cross for Bravery and numerous other gallantry awards and citations in other theatres and WWII. Savige was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (Military Division) and Companion of the Order of the Bath.
After the war he played a key role in the establishment of Legacy Australia, the war widows and orphans benefit fund.
During the early years of the Second World War, Savige commanded the 17th Infantry Brigade in the North African campaign, the Battle of Greece and Syria-Lebanon campaign. He returned to Australia after the Battle of Greece, but later commanded the 3rd Division in the Salamaua-Lae campaign. He ultimately rose to the rank of Lieutenant General in the Australian Army, commanding the II Corps in the Bougainville campaign.
He was a 'personal inspiration' and always concerned for 'the welfare of the troops'. John Hetherington concluded: 'Savige did not pretend to be a military genius, but only a commander who knew his way round the battlefield because he had learned his soldiering the hard way'. He died on 15 May 1954.

Robert Trimbole
Robert Trimbole was an Australian businessman, drug baron and organised crime boss whose alleged involvement in the disappearance of anti-marijuana campaigner Donald Mackay and involvement in drug trafficking in the Griffith, New South Wales area, led to a royal commission, a Coroner's inquest and an international chase by the Australian Government seeking his arrest and capture after his escape to Ireland.

Baker's Creek 75th Anniversary
The Bakers Creek monument honors 40 American Soldiers – victims of an airplane crash in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. On June 14, 1943, the soldiers were returning from R&R leave in Australia to the battlefields of New Guinea when their B-17 crashed shortly after take-off at Bakers Creek, near Mackay, Queensland.
This year’s ceremony marks the 75th anniversary of the crash. Organizers of the effort to find a permanent home for the Bakers Creek monument, built in part by the government of Australia, wanted it placed at Arlington National Cemetery. But as the cemetery no longer accepts memorials on its grounds due to space constraints, the monument was placed at Joint Base Myer - Henderson Hall in 2009, in the “shadow” of the cemetery.
Representatives from the Australia in the United States in Washington D.C. will be in attendance to lay wreaths, along with Joint Base Commander, Col. Peeples, at the monument.
