More info: Located at 82 Bond Street, just east of todays intersection of Yonge and Dundas streets in downtown Toronto, Mackenzie House is a Greek Revival row-house, which was purchased by the community for William Lyon Mackenzie who was the first Mayor of Toronto, an outspoken newspaper editor and leader of the 1837 Upper Canada Rebellion. This house is believed to be one of the most haunted houses in Toronto and possibly Canada. Even if ghostly activity is not witnessed, the exhibits are worth the visit!

William Lyon Mackenzie King, was a Canadian lawyer, economist, university professor, consultant, civil servant, journalist, teacher, and politician. He served as the tenth Prime Minister of Canada. With over 21 years in the office, he was the longest-serving Prime Minister in British Commonwealth history. His maternal grandfather was William Lyon Mackenzie, first mayor of Toronto and leader of the Upper Canada Rebellion in 1837... Privately, he was highly eccentric with his preference for communing with spirits, including those of Leonardo da Vinci, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, his dead mother, and several of his Irish Terrier dogs, all named Pat except one named Bob. He also claimed to commune with the spirit of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, American president and close friend. In 1953 Time Magazine stated that he owned and used both a Ouija board and a crystal ball, now on display at Laurier House

COLONIAL ADVOCATE

Mackenzie Printery and Newspaper Museum editor and agitator for politcal reform William Lyon Mackenzie published the Colonial Advocate in nearby Queenston on May 18, 1824. For Mackenzie, publishing the paper began a career of public activism for the reformation of the government of Upper Canada which led to the ill-fated Upper Canada Rebellion at York (Toronto) in 1837
