MacLaren Art Centre Barrie
The MacLaren Art Centre is an art gallery and museum, located in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. It houses many important Canadian works of art.
Distinguished watercolourist and longtime Barrie resident Ernest Conyers Barker was known for his progressive career that spanned seventy years. Barker was inspired by a variety of sources ranging from the Group of Seven to surrealism to modernist abstraction. Though best known for his stylized landscapes, he also painted contemplative portraits and robust abstractions. This exhibition features watercolours from the MacLaren’s collection that showcase the remarkable breadth of Barker’s artistic output, with a special focus on his intuitive approach to rendering the landscape that surrounded him.
Landon Mackenzie is a nationally known, Vancouver-based artist, admired for her large-scale works with paint on canvas. Less known are her works on paper, which she produces voluminously as a tandem practice to her big paintings, often while travelling. These function at times as glimpses into this intelligent artist’s psyche or soul.

MacLaren Art Centre
The MacLaren Art Centre is the regional public art gallery serving the residents of Barrie, the County of Simcoe and the surrounding area. The Gallery has a permanent collection of 26,600 works of art held in trust for the public and presents a year-round programme of world-class exhibitions, public art projects, education activities and special events. The MacLaren is housed in an award-winning building in downtown Barrie. This architectural landmark combines a renovated 1917 Carnegie library with a contemporary addition designed by Siamak Hariri of Hariri Pontarini Architects. The complex includes multiple galleries, an education centre, a sculpture courtyard, café, gift shop and framing department.

The Animated Barrie Book Project 2013
The MacLaren Art Centre was pleased to present an exhibition of artworks and a short animation created by youth participating in a MacLaren programme led by regional artists Kirsty Wilson and Linda Koenemund.
In celebration of the City of Barrie’s 160th anniversary, The Animated Barrie Book Project explores the altered book as a sculptural art form, expressing the dynamic qualities of this city.
In a series of workshops, youth worked collaboratively to produce a detailed narrative created from paper objects collaged together. These were then carefully animated using the stop-motion animation technique. The result is an ambitious short animation expressing the many aspects of our vibrant city.
The participating youth include Michaela Bayley, Juliette Caluim, Kate Chernousova, Emma Davidson, Evangelina Dold, Josie Fiegehem, Caela Logan, Caitlyn Logan, L. Morris, Serena Parsons, Ariel Pretty, Phoebe Pretty and Gillian V.
The MacLaren would like to thank the City of Barrie, Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council.
Appreciation is extended to TD Bank for their ongoing support of youth programmes at the MacLaren Art Centre.
The Sarjeant Co. Design Project 2014
In workshops led by regional artists Jacqueline Swanek and Kirsty Wilson, students from Collingwood Collegiate Institute, Midland Secondary School, Banting Memorial High School (Alliston) and St. Joseph's Catholic High School (Barrie) have created unique monumental designs. In addition to this exhibition of their artwork, several of their designs have been transferred to the drums of Sarjeant concrete trucks as a public art project and travelling exhibition.
Eighty-two students from across Simcoe County participated in this project. Students were asked to create designs with a rotational composition and to consider images and text that would uniquely represent their school. The resulting exhibition displays their creative outcomes and varied approach to this design challenge.
The MacLaren Art Centre and the Sarjeant Co. would like to thank Scott Gibbons, Manager of Operations; Kim Dickson, Executive Assistant to the President and CEO and Mike MacMillan, Manager, I.T. & Land Development who assisted with the selection of images.
