Alang Madan Kulang Trek | Day 2 - The Toughest Day
Vlog of my attempt of Along Madan Kulang Trek (Day 2) in November 2018
If you follow the itinerary that we had, then day 2 will be the toughest day. The day began with a wake up call at 5.30 am followed the getting prepped and breakfast. Hardly had we make it out of our campsite came the first challenge. Climbing down almost vertical stairs cut into an open rock with wide exposure to the valley which was followed by rappel down a 50-60 feet rock face. This was followed by some more descents until we reached col between Alang and Madan to traverse Madan fort and then start a technical climb of the Madan rock patch. Next we climbed the almost vertical stairs cut in to rocky mountain and summited Madan fort. After lunch we had to backtrack all the way to col between Alang and Madan fort traversing the western side of Madan fort to reach the Kulang Fort traverse before starting climbing Kulang fort which was to be our campsite for the Day 2 of Alang Madan Kulang Trek
Info about AMK Trek :
Difficulty: High. I would strongly advise you to have at least done 10-15 treks in Sahyadris before attempting this trek. You should be comfortable with heights and also be able to hold your own on various open-valley-facing-rock patches.
Endurace level: High. You’ll have to carry food for 3 days and 3 litre of water a day. There are water tanks available on top of the fort but you need to have sufficient water to last until you reach the top. This is in addition to to your gear, clothes, sleeping bags, harnesses and other safety equipment required for the technical climbing/rappeling part of the trek
Experience: Experienced fellow trekkers and leaders are a must. This must not be taken lightly. The trek leaders and core organising team should have highest of leadership and technical skills to guide the rest of the group. Do not this with a couple of friends or just your own gang (unless you are an expert with impeccable experience of the mountains)
General
Alang Madan Kulang forts adjacent to each other in the Nashik region of Sahyadri (Western Ghats) mountain ranges in Maharashtra, India. People climb these forts via various trails or routes in different order but popularly the entire trek is called AMK Trek.
Fill up your water bottles/hydration packs before leaving Alang as there are no water sources before reaching summit of Madan fort and this takes roughly 3-4 hours. There is a water tank on top of Madan fort and water is potable. Once again, fill you water at Madan fort because there is none until Kulang fort summit. There is a cave on Madan fort should you wish to camp there for the night. However, for those who plan to camp at Kulang, an idea would be leave your bags (except food and water) at the col (or some safe place) before climbing Madan and collecting them on your way to Kulang.
Kulang is the largest fort among the three and has plenty of water tanks including a tank. There is a cave to camp in but those carrying tents can camp outside as well. Mind you, it might get windy and cold at night.
I went on this trek with a group called Nisarg Bhraman based on Mumbai, Maharashtra. The trek leaders and organising team was highly experienced, skilled and they lead the rest of us in a perfect manner. You can get in touch with them here - (This statement is not a review and I received no payment in cash of kind for producing this video or mentioning Nisarg Bhraman group here. I paid the charges related to the trek as everyone else and was a participant. Nothing more)

Camping at Kulang Fort (कुलंगचा सहवास)
Kulang fort
(कुलंग गड ) is located in the Igatpuri area of Nashik district, on the western side of the Kalsubai hill range. This fort is adjacent to the Madangad and Alang forts, all of which were constructed to protect the Nashik-Kalyan ancient commercial road.
There is a base village Ambevadi or Kurangwadi, from which it takes about two to three hours to reach the fort. The path passes through a dense forest area, the Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary.
There is potable water on the way and plenty of clean water on the fort. There are spacious caves on the fort which could accommodate up to 100 persons. There is no fuel wood on the fort, so it is preferable to carry fuel wood or a gas-stove from the base village.
