Maduwanwela Walawwa is a Walauwa located in upper South of Sri Lanka. Situated in the town of Kolonne, which lies between Embilipitiya and Suriyakanda in Ratnapura District, a distance of 207 km (129 mi) from the Colombo.
Maduwanwela Walawwa dates back to the reign of King Wimaladharmasuriya II (1687-1707 AD).[2] It was built by Maduwanwela Maha Mohottala in the 1700s and was expanded numerous times by the Maduwanwela family until 1905 when the final expansion was undertaken by Maduwanwela Maha Disawe.
During 1877-1905 period, the Walawwa had 121 rooms, 21 inner courtyards (Meda Midula)[2] and 80 000 acres of land surrounding it, at present there are on 43 rooms left.[3] Located on in the grounds is a courthouse with seating space for 100 people, furniture and the equipment used for punishments are still present. Following the death of Maduwanwela Maha Disawe, the last of the Maduwanwela family, the house was transferred to Sir Francis Molamure. In 1974, it was transferred to the state and taken over by the Department of Archaeological and converted into a museum.[4]

Suriyakanda is a beautiful mountain range located in border of Sinharaja rain forest. there are mamals,repltiles,birds and dangerous animals like leopards and bears also live there.Deniyaya road goes across this mountain.The buluthota pass as a winding stretch of road with ten hairpin bends that climbs through the mountain between the towns of Rakwana and Suriyakanda. that is a very scenic drive with plenty of photographic locations.
Archaeological Heritage and tourism in Sri Lanka
WAWULPANE LIMESTONE CAVE
The road to ‘Wawulpane limestone’ cave found on the Rathnapura – Embilipitiya
road, a little far from Pallebedda city. Through the road it’s only 15km to reach the cave.The archeologists express that this cave has 500 million years history. This is the one & only cave which we can see an internal waterfall in Sri Lanka. As well as this is the second largest limestone cave in Sri Lanka. When we reach the middle
of the cave we can see a fossil of a dinosaur or like animal.
The cave is surrounded by preserve forest and a brackish water stream flows
through it.
At the entrance of the cave there is a spectacular & natural creature which called
is ‘Yodhya kepu wala’. Also, we can see a fossil of a leaf and marbels.
This is one of most interesting place in Sri Lankan tourism industry.
MADUWANWALA WALAWWA
Maduwanwala Walawwa is one of the golden heritage in Sri Lankan culture,
which situated in the town of ‘Kalawana’ lies between ‘Embilipitiya and
Suriyakanda’ in Rathnapura district. This is one of the conspicuous persisting
residence in Sri Lanka.
The grandeur bears testimony to the man who made it his home, Maduwanwala
disawe popularly known as ‘Maha kalu sinhalaya’. It speaks volumes of a man’s
spirit, his heroism and how he used his unique mansion to display his resentment
and protest the colonial masters.
The walawwa had 82,000 acres of land surrounding it which is full of valuable
flora. Also, it has two grand rock archways, 121 rooms, 21 courtyards, 03
battlements. (defense walls) Court house, ponds, cereal garners and “Bo stupa”.
The combination of the all the accents that mentioned above reveals the
improvement of Sri Lankan architecture and depicts the format of ‘walawwa’.
Three dimersional picture of the ‘Black Prince’( Maduwanwala Disawe) still
stands in the walawwa with a huge wooden frame. Maduwanwala Walawwa has
many more attraction of local and foreign tourists. That can recognized as
nation’s heritage.
RAMBA TEMPLE
The Ramba Temple is far 22km from Rathnapura – Embilipitiya road and
covering from north by the river Walawe cover the southern & western part.
At the end of 10th BC century the ‘Magam Ruhuna Kingdom’ developed as the
collapse of the Anuradhapura Kingdom because of the attacks by Southern
Indians. There were two sections of this kingdom named as ‘Atadahasrata and
Dolosdahasrata’.
This temple complex covered over 300 acres and there are 25 building complexes
such as huge halls & houses of statues. There is a beautiful Dhageba which was
created by king ‘Mahanaga’ after the escape from Anuradhapura to south. The
Ramba name got because of the ‘Kotha’ IS made of gold. There are so many
historical structures like ‘Sandakada Pahana, Muragala, Korawakgala, Dhageba
and ponds. As well as Buddha statues, Aasana (made of stone), kehekili and clay
carves.
Suriyakanda - සූරියකන්ද - A Hidden Paradise.
We decided to head out to the beautiful Suriyakanda, known as Morning Side to witness a scenery that just so breathtaking. The sun was so soft on us in the entire hike. Enjoy!

Patna & Morningside Suriyakanda - Deniyaya | Sri Lanka
Between Rakwana and Deniyaya is Suriyakanda, a tiny peaceful town with zero tourists. Morningside is about 7Kms from the town. Originally named by the colonial planters who grew tea on morningside, now it has been replaced by cardamom. Visitors can observe the entire process of cardamom production here.
