Located an hour’s drive north of Chiang Rai city, Mae Fah Luang Garden is a beautiful place to visit if you are in this part of northern Thailand. Northern Thailand is blessed with a climate that’s cooler than the rest of the country. This makes it conducive to growing ‘exotic’ Western flowers that are typically found outside of Thailand.

Thailand - Chang Rai - Mae Fah Luang Garden on Doi Tung
The Garden is located on land that was originally the Akha village of Pa Kluay. This village used to be an important route for opium caravans and those involved in heroin-related trafficking and weapons. Situated in a deep gorge where the Akha lived in a dense settlement without the possibility of expansion, there was little space for hygiene, trash or wastewater management. At the request of the Doi Tung Development Project, the villagers agreed to be relocated to a new site 500 meters away. This site sits on a hill with expansive land. It has running water, electricity, and a paved road into the village.
The decorative flowers in Mae Fah Luang Garden are grown and nurtured by local villagers. The Garden brings substantial income to the area, directly as job opportunities for the locals, and indirectly as a tourist destination.

Gelegen op een hoogte van 950 meter boven de zeespiegel, de Mae Fah Luang tuin bestaat uit bloemperken beplant met een duizelingwekkende verscheidenheid aan bloemen en struiken uit alle hoeken van de wereld; onder deze, meer dan 70 soorten van koele klimaat en gematigde sier-en bloei planten die goed gedijen op grote hoogte worden geplant in het midden van inheemse planten, groene struiken en vaste planten. Een groot aantal bloeiende planten tot bloei komen het hele jaar door en vormen een prachtige heuvel-side tapijt dat verandert met de seizoenen.
Vaak omschreven als de meest prachtige aangelegde tuin in het Koninkrijk van Thailand, en misschien zelfs, in de regio Azië-Pacific, in 1993, was The Mae Fah Luang Tuin bekroond met de Pacific Asia Tourism Association's PATA Gold Awards in de categorie 'Tourism Development' in erkenning van zijn uitstekende prestatie in de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe toeristische bestemming.
Een bronzen standbeeld, getiteld Continuïteit is het middelpunt van de tuinen. Het toont een groep kinderen die elkaar ondersteunen in een menselijke piramide vorming als een van hen klimt naar de hemel.
Het monument is een eerbetoon aan de onvermoeibare inspanningen van HKH de Prinses Moeder om het leven van de bevolking van Thailand en haar overtuiging dat voortdurende inspanning leidt tot succes te verbeteren.
