Lukang Trip
Our first outing with Formosa took place in February, we were a small group of 5 people in addition to Cindy and Raymond, and we set off to explore Lukang.
Lukang is known for its many temples, including the most important Matsu temple in Taiwan.
So we visited four temples in one day. They were all totally different, and Raymond taught us many things about traditions.
For example, did you know that among the three gateways of a temple, you can’t go through the central door that is reserved for important people and celebrations ? You have to go to the left side and come out on the right side, facing the temple, stepping well. The reason is that you have to enter like a dragon as an officer to stay in the temple and after, you have to come out like a tiger as a worrier to fight. Doing this will bring you good fortune.
Believers burn sticks of incense in front of the temples, in order to communicate with the Gods, the smoke that rises to heaven carries with them their prayers. They must also burn papers that are replicas of bank notes to ensure the deceased all the comfort they need.
When we made this trip, we were still in the New Year period, so we had the chance to see all the life that could be in the temples. When we entered the Matsu Temple, we could observe a whole room filled with lights with an impressive dragon. We were totally in love with this fairy room, there was a magical atmosphere.
We also visited the temple and the glass gallery dedicated to Matsu. Everything was made of glass in the temple, it was really impressive, we were all in awe of so much art.
We had the chance to test some traditional Chinese games. Raymond taught us how to use them. In reality, it is not that simple. When we see Raymond play it feels like it's really child's play, but you have to have a few falls to his credit for example to succeed to stand on these stilts. We tested everything, be it the cup and ball, the stilts, the top with the string, the hoop... Personally, the only one that suited me was the cup and ball, simple and safe (once we have the technique).
Then we went to the artists' village, and we were able to write with traditional brushes on a table with water. Everything is much harder than it looks, it looked like a child just learning to write. It takes a special technique so that it does not run everywhere. Of course, I did not have the technique at all.
In Lukang’s streets, there are many stalls of traditional food, Raymond has made us discover a lot of dishes each better than the others. From candy made in front of us in the shape of a dinosaur, to the soup of noodles and oysters, to the traditional omelette with oysters, our taste buds appreciated the discoveries.
Lukang really has a lot to offer, so you have to stay there for a whole day to make sure you get the most out of it. It is a place to visit absolutely.
This day will have been rich in discoveries, we all keep excellent memories and beautiful photos.

Travel Vlog: 你好 Taiwan 2016
你好 Nĭ Hăo Taiwan
I have never imagined going to Taiwan. And I’m still stupefied that I have. I just believed I’d visit a few different countries first, like Vietnam, Japan and Korea. In saying that, I have no regrets of what could be described as a spontaneous trip, with less than a week of planning.
For some context, my ED-Visa in Thailand was due to expire. No.1 rule in Thailand Don’t overstay your visa”. So travelling to a new country for a few days seemed like the obvious choice. I had been studying intensive Thai at Siri Pattana Thai Language School (Kru kong phom dee mak mak), so a break was due + I was excited to return to Thailand to start Chapter 2 of my NCP Program as a C&S Engineer Intern at Meinhardt (Thailand) Ltd. So 干杯 Ganbei to Business-Visa!
Back to Taiwan: It’s a beautiful island characterised by mountains, green lush forests and an urban city filled with friendly people and frothing public transport system. You can travel anywhere using the MRT and their shared-bike system is incredible. I’ve never rode a bicycle around an Asian busy city fearing for my life but Taiwan… you’ve changed me. The food was also so delicious and I do believe that I might actually like 7-Eleven (Taiwan) greater than 7-Eleven (Thailand). And I love 7-Eleven in Bangkok.
The trip was overlapped with many incredible friends. So thankful to GG, Chi and Yulie for their time and hospitality to show me and others their home country. I was able to travel outside Taipei to the Taoyan province, check out Taipei 101, climb Elephant Hike Trail in my sweat, learn Chinese/Taiwanese history at Memorial Hall, practise the religious culture at temples, party at “The Wave” (Taiwan’s party scene deserves a tale of its own), and by god, Jiufen!!! Jiufen is Hayao Miyazaki’s source of inspiration for “Spirited Away” ~ I fangirled so much.
A lot of stories, memories and a Business-VISA thanks to the support received from Meinhardt, UTS:International and the Thailand Economic and Trade Office in Taiwan. So video montage is my final offshore trip before crunch-time 40 hours per week internship to get some learning and experience. Seriously though, check out Taiwan!
