Walk along the River Wensum in Norwich part two of four
SEE MY SITE ON FACEBOOK :
Starting at the former location of Norwich City Station, I continue with my walk along the River Wensum in Norwich. The river system in East Anglia used to be much larger and Norwich was as far inland as sea going vessels could go. The river is tidal to Norwich but not beyond it, now it is tidal as far as New Mill Sluice.
We can no longer see Viking remains in Norwich but we can see homes from the sixteenth century and those that remind us that the city was once a port. Its initial wealth was based on the wool trade which made up a significant part of the GDP of England as it existed in medieval times.
The dominant building materials are brick and flint. Flint is too weak to be used for construction but it can be used as infill or combined with brick for strength.
Norwich was home to the Yorvik shoe factory, the largest footwear producer in the UK. There was a tradition of shoe and leather manufacture along the northern bank of the Wensum river which Yorvik managed to exploit in the nineteenth century. The fate of Norvik was shared by many industrial businesses in the UK.

I was locking my bike to a sturdy pole when I heard a motorbike approaching. I saw this bike come out from an area under the flyover and exit over the pedestrian footpath and on to the road way and take off towards Tombland with what appeared to be a yellow carrier bag on his left handlebars.

My channel on you tube : is one of the most prolific from Poland. I have produced around 1,800 original films, most in English. My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects.
Please feel free to ask questions in the public area or to comment on things you disagree with. Sometimes there are mistakes because I speak without preparation. If I see the mistakes myself, I make this clear in the text. Please also leave a star rating!
There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.
Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!
Magdalen Walks: 'Passing on the Craft - Stonemasonry in North Norwich' with Colin Howey
Magdalen Street Walks, a group that meets to build and give local walks has made a series of 6 films based around Magdalen Street in Norwich. Each one has been made by a different person and each shares with us something special that they have noticed about the area.
In this film, Colin gives us a glimpse of a very special project that is building within St. Clements Church, Colegate. The Guild of St Stephen & St George are training the next generation of stonemasons. There’s more to this than meets the eye!

The City Centre Spectacular Is The Common Lot’s Love Story To Anglia Square
The area where Anglia Square stands today, was part of the Saxon settlement of Northwic, which was defended by Anglo-Scandinavian defensive ditches running along what is now Botolph Street and Anglia Square car park. Magdalen Street and St Augustine’s, which are two of the oldest streets in Norwich, date back to those times. ‘Anglia Square: A Love Story’ is a year-long project supported by funding from the National Heritage Lottery Fund, launched in December 2018 by The Common Lot and our reporter Amie-Beth Steadman went to the performance
