Magee Handwoven Tweed of Donegal Town
We are in Donegal town Co Donegal Ireland. We are in what is known as the 'Diamond'. This is the town's central square for meeting, people watching and shopping.
Magee of Donegal is prominent amongst the shops bordering the diamond. Magee of Donegal has been the home of clothing and men's luxury Donegal tweed since 1866. Mind you, you will need a full wallet and a very healthy bank balance if you want to shop there on a regular basis!
'Magee was founded on handwoven tweed over 150 years ago. This hardwearing, coarse fabric was handwoven in Donegal by part-time fishermen/farmers and part-time weavers in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s. It was an ideal fabric for dissipating the damp and cold weather, so often found in North-west Ireland.
Handweaving is a skill that has been passed down through the generations. It is suggested that the art of weaving dates back to the Palaeolithic era, although there is little evidence to support this, however woven linen cloth has been found dating back to the Neolithic period. While there may be a few thousand years in the debate as to when weaving was first developed, we know for a fact it is a reassuringly ancient skill and craft!
Fast forward to 2018, we still design and produce a unique handwoven fabric – while we retain similar, timeless designs – namely the herringbone – inspired by fish-bones and the 'true Donegal tweed' – the salt & pepper. We use the finest of yarns – lambswool, mohair and cashmere. Designs are sent to the weavers who work in their homes, the raw fabric is then sent back to the mill to be washed and finished. We wash the raw, oily fabric in the peaty waters of the River Eske, which flows by the mill, resulting in a beautifully soft finish.
Donegal handwoven tweed is distinctive with its bright flecks of colour woven through each piece. Heather purples, grass greens, fuchsia pinks, gorse yellows, sea blues and earthy browns to name but a few colours found in this unique fabric.
Magee introduced powerlooms in the 1970’s, allowing for better efficiency and the ability to create much more intricate designs in comparison to the handloom.
Magee specialise in bright, colourful fabrics with intricate design detail. We split the tweed collection into three main elements.
Celtic tweeds – a celebration of authentic Shetlands in both coating and jacketing weights.
Noble fibres – the luxury and elegance of angora, alpaca and cashmere.
Fancy tweeds – a kaleidoscope of colour and weaves expressing our love of design and weaving.
Robert Noble specialise in the finest of natural fibres, from 100% lambswool to intimate blends of wool and cashmere. Lightweight wool/linen and silk mixes are ideal summer-weight fabrics for men.
New this season – a lightweight Shetland base with a chunky boucle – a proper textured and fun tweed!
Robert Noble also specialises in beautiful mid-season weights for jackets, suits and coatings.'

Spring/Summer 2016
150th Year Anniversary Collection
In the same year that the gold rush was underway in New Zealand, the Austro Hungarian War began and ended, a Cholera epidemic gripped London, the US declared the end of the Civil War, and the first yacht race across the Atlantic took place; John Magee opened a small drapers shop in Donegal Town, Ireland – here he bought and sold tweed. Robert Temple, his cousin joined the business a few years later and bought the business in 1900. Magee is still trading today with the 3rd and 4th Temple generation at it’s helm.
Weaving luxurious cloths inspired by the beauty of Donegal is still at the heart the business today, but it is much more than this; Magee create Womenswear and Menswear Seasonal Lifestyle Collections which are purveyed on every corner of the globe, our Personal Tailoring service offers clients the opportunity to create unique garments, our Formalwear collections have witnessed many happy occasions, traditional crafted hand-knits are still a key part of the business enjoying immense success in Japan, and we trade on-line, in our three wonderful Irish stores and in our many loyal Independent Retail stores. Magee supports 117 jobs directly, and has been contributing to the Irish economy at large for 150 Years.
To celebrate this tremendous mile stone, Magee are proud to present a Spring Summer Capsule Collection in honour of our Sesquicentennial Anniversary.
The Collection is inspired by our rich archives; silk, wool, linen and cashmere blends in herringbone, hounds-tooth, Donegal and Glen check weaves, played out in deep cobalt navy, nostalgic oat, raspberry and kindly greens. The luxurious cloths are woven in our mill in Donegal by expert weavers, some with over forty years’ experience in the field.
These cloths are embodied in timeless garments in modern and retro styling; including on-trend tailored-fit three piece suits with collar and lapel waistcoat, unstructured jackets sporting flattering silhouettes with vintage patch pockets, mock-action back and out-side-ticket pocket optional features, and classic structured blazers and waistcoats with contemporary straight pockets.
The custom made linings and trims featuring our Irish Wolfhound logo elegantly complete the garments.
A concise range of relaxed linen and cotton oxford shirts, washed tailored-fit chinos and cashmere sweaters with hints of heritage in their design complete the Anniversary Collection.
It is with great pride and happiness that we continue to support the talented designers & skilled weavers in our Weaving and Clothing Division, bringing employment and life to a rural area with so much history and expertise in weaving and design.
