Address: P. Burgos St, Cebu City, Cebu
Hours:
Open ⋅ Closes 6PM
When you enter inside the kiosk, you will see the Magellan’s Cross situated in the center. The ceiling above the cross has paintings that depict the arrival of Magellan and the planting of the cross, and the baptism of Rajah Humabon, his wife and their subjects.
A sign below the cross states that the original cross is encased inside a cross made of tindalo wood. That was done to protect the original Magellan’s Cross from people who chipped away parts of the cross in the belief that the cross has miraculous powers or for souvenir purposes.
However, some historians and other people believe that the original cross had been destroyed or had disappeared after Magellan was killed, and that the cross encased inside the tindalo wood cross is a replica that was planted there by the Spaniards who came after the death of Magellan.
Today, the Magellan’s Cross is a popular tourist attraction in Cebu. It is also a symbol of Cebu City and the kiosk’s image can be found in its official city seal. In addition, many government and non-government organizations based in Cebu use the Magellan’s Cross or the kiosk in their seals and logos. The Magellan’s Cross is seen as the symbol of the establishment of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines.

Did you know: Magellan's Cross is probably the most important historical marker in Cebu City. travelogphilippines.com
Magellan's Cross (Spanish: Cruz de Magallanes) is a Christian cross planted by Portuguese and Spanish explorers as ordered by Ferdinand Magellan upon arriving in Cebu in the Philippines on (depending on source) 16 (U.S. date) or 17(Philippines date) March 1521.[1][2] This cross is housed in a chapel next to the Basilica Menor del Santo Niño on Magallanes Street, just in front of the city center of Cebu City. A sign below the cross states that the original cross is encased inside the wooden cross made of tingalo wood. This is to protect the original cross from people who chipped away parts of the cross for souvenir purposes in the belief that the cross possesses miraculous powers.[3] Some people, however, believe that the original cross has been destroyed or disappeared after Magellan's death and the cross is a replica that was planted there by the Spaniards after they successfully christianized the Philippines

Cebu City is right in front of Magellan's Cross. Cebu is known for Magellan's Cross. This is the cross Magellan planted when he first came to Cebu in March 16, 1521. The cross is made of Tindalo wood. The real cross in inside the big cross. They had to hide it from the visitors because sometimes people want to chip off a little bit from the cross for souvenir.
