Lapu-Lapu Shrine, Magellan Shrine, Punta Engaño, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, Philippines
Nora and I, along with her brother Joel, got to have a nice visit to Mactan Island and see both of the famous shrines there to Lapu Lapu and Ferdinand Magellan. This is an important place in the history of the Philippines and to all Filipinos, but especially to practitioners of the Filipino Martial Arts - Arnis, Eskrima, Kali, etc.
We really enjoyed getting to be here and are glad to share it with you. Enjoy!

I-Witness: A Documentary of Lapu-Lapu by Jay Taruc
Lapu-Lapu (fl. 1521) was a ruler of Mactan in Visayas. Modern Philippine society regards him as the first Filipino hero because he was the first native to resist Spanish colonization. He is best known for the Battle of Mactan that happened at dawn on April 27, 1521, where he and his soldiers defeated Ferdinand Magellan.
The battle ended up in the killing of Magellan[1] and the end of his expedition and it delayed the Spanish occupation of the islands by over forty years until the expedition of Miguel López de Legazpi in 1564. Monuments to Lapu-Lapu have been built in Manila and Cebu while the Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Fire Protection use his image.
Besides being a rival of Rajah Humabon of Cebu, little is known about the life of Lapu-Lapu. The only existing documents about his life are those written by Antonio Pigafetta. His name, origins, religion, and fate are still a matter of controversy.
Lapu-Lapu is also known under the names Çilapulapu,[2] Si Lapulapu,[3] Salip Pulaka,[4] Cali Pulaco,[5] and Lapulapu Dimantag.[6]

The Mactan Shrine, located on Mactan Island, just of the coast from Cebu City, is a must-see for everyone interested in Filipino history. It commemorates the Battle of Mactan that took place in 1521 between the Spanish and the Visayan native people in April 1521 and, along with paintings and plaques about that battle, it also contains two other important shrines -- the Lapu Lapu Shrine and the Magellan Shrine
Mactan Shrine pays homage to both Magellan and Lapu Lapu by honoring each with their own shrines. The Lapu Lapu Shrine features a bronze Lapu Lapu dressed in traditional Filipino garb while holding a kampilan or a traditional Philippine sword on his right and a shield on his left.
The Magellan Monument, built in honor of Ferdinand Magellan, is a coral stone obelisk that marks the spot where he was supposedly slain, though no trace of his body was found. He may be seen as an enemy by most Filipinos, but he is the person responsible for bringing Christianity to the country; hence, a shrine in his memorial.
You can find the Mactan Shrine along Punta Engaño Road, Lapu Lapu City.
Lapu-Lapu, Mactan Shrine and Magellan's Marker plus Lechon sa Daan: When in Cebu
The Magellan Shrine is a large memorial tower erected in 1866 in honor of the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan on the Mactan Island of Cebu, the Philippines. The spot is believed to be the site where Magellan was killed in the 1521 Battle of Mactan.
A festival called the Kadaugan sa Mactan (Victory at Mactan), commemorating the triumph of the heroic native chieftain Lapu-Lapu over Magellan, is held on 27 April every year. On this occasion, colorful events include a ceremonial procession of decorated bancas (canoes) representing Magellan's three boats on the sea coast of the beach of Barangay, erecting the cross of Magellan on the island, conversion of the local people to Christianity by baptism, and scenes of the recreation of the battle.
Lapu-Lapu was one of the two datus of Mactan before the Spanish arrived in the archipelago, the other being a certain Zula, both of whom belong to the Maginoo class. When Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the Philippines in the service of Spain, Zula was one of those who gave tribute to the Spanish king while Lapu-Lapu refused.
Check out this video how this shrine now looke like!
