HOW TO MAKE THIS LIFESTYLE A REALITY FOR *YOU* (read below)
THE MOST CRITICAL THING we did to get here was effectively manage our money. We make around $2,000-$5,000 USD per month, not much to sustain full-time travel, fully own our van, and have some $$$ left over. We share with you our money-management strategies in our $19 course here:
SECONDLY, here is a list of companies that:
- Save us money
- Teach us skills to make us money
- Make products we NEED to live our current lifestyle

ABOUT THE EPISODE:
We are finally feeling better and decided to celebrate our health beside one of the most beautiful lakes we have ever seen. Lake Atitlán is a stunning oasis in northern Guatemala. Steeped in ancient Mayan culture, visiting the towns around the lake feels like stepping back in time.
We met so many wonderful vanlifers and backpackers during our stay here and were so sad that we couldn't stay longer! The friendships that we have made in the van life community are truly special. Traveling Guatemala was lovely and it is something that we absolutely hope to do more of in the future.
About The Matneys:
We're Christian and Aubry, a couple traveling North and South America in our converted Sprinter Van. On The Matneys, we love chatting about the reality of living in a van, what van life allows us to do, and how traveling to new places with new cultures can really open your eyes to so much about the world, our own country, and ourselves. Our little home is simple, but it takes us to the most magical paradises in the world.

Exploring Lake Atitlan
I am loving my adventures here on the beautiful Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. This country is so beautiful, and is quickly becoming one of my favorite places! The Mayan culture is very prominent here, and Livio and I were lucky enough to be welcomed into a Mayan ceremony. I can’t wait to keep exploring this amazing place!

Visiting the charming Antigua in Guatemala
The charms of Antigua
the bus to Guatemala City is freezing cold, driver is another NFS fan. We struggle to stay in our otherwise large seats.
We’ve had some sleep and arrive around 5 a.m. in Guatemala City. The shuttle guy is waiting for us (we were told to wait until 6) so good news!
But the shuttle is somewhere else so we go out for a walk in a very non-tourist friendly area in the dark.
We reach the shuttle and our driver is of course in a hurry but we need a real bed so ok.
At some point of time he asks money from us. We paid the other day and we have voucher. He’s not happy as it Is obviously something not agreed with the agent in Flores. A fight follows he refuses to give us our backpacks. Just before I call the police, Nace convinces the driver to call the agent. Driver not happy but what can he do?
Todo bien. We head to the house were supposed to stay. It’s a quiet local neighborhood. I mean everything’s quiet on a Saturday morning before 7 a.m.
They don’t expect us that early and there’s at least one dog inside.
The dog is friendly and they allow us to use another room to sleep until it’s time to check in.
We wake up fresh and enthusiastic for a walk. Antigua is full of cars and tuk-tuks and smells like something you don’t want to spend hours walking in. We wonder how so many people are attracted to this town.
We haven’t eaten in almost 25 hours and we stumble a lovely family-run restaurant where a mother and daughter pampered every our whim.
For dinner we had less luck and waited half an hour for very small and expensive sandwiches. And everywhere we get surrounded by street merchants and beggars.
Ok, Antigua has its cool vibes. The colonial architecture, the food scene, the language schools. And this important religious procession which is like a small carnival. And the pancakes for late dinner!
We won’t be doing a volcano hike this time. We don’t have the proper equipment, also the mental and physical shape and mostly the weather isn’t very promising for nice views of eruptions.
But the view from our balcony is worth millions! Erupting Volcano del Fuego, the majestic Acatenango and the nearby Agua. We are enchanted by the smoking eruptions of the coughing volcano. And a sunny walk in the morning reminds us why so many people are attracted to the photogenic Antigua. And even better pancakes!

Guatemala (Beautiful) Rio Dulce Part 5
Welcome to my travelchannel. On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries.
See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!
Guatemala,Rio Dulce:
The area called the Rio Dulce begins at the mouth of the river on the Bahia de Amatique at the Garifuna town of Livingston on the Caribbean coast. Going upriver, one passes through a spectacular steep walled canyon lined with jungle vegetation and wildlife. The river then widens into a small lake, El Golfete, the shores of which are lined with beautiful locations, Mayan settlements and a manatee reserve. The river then narrows and passes the towns of Fronteras and El Relleno (at the bridge) where there is an abundance of hotels, restaurants, marinas, services for boaters, medical care, communications and transportation.
A little further and the river widens into 590 square kilometer Lake Izabal, the largest lake in Guatemala. The Rio Dulce is a large river that is 500 to 1500 meters (1/3 to 1 mile) wide over much of its length. The narrowest spot is at a point called La Vaca where the river narrows to a little over 100 meters (300 feet) as it squeezes through The Canyon. The river and both lakes are navigable by vessels of modest draft. Many smaller rivers and countless creeks and streams feed the river and lakes. Many of these rivers can be traveled for miles by dinghy or canoe through beautiful forests and grassy meadows. The Rio Dulce is an aquatic community. The highway passing through Fronteras / El Relleno on its way up to the Peten is the only access road to the area. Outside the towns there are no roads or footpaths other than a road leading to Castile San Felipe and El Estor.
The get around to different places on the Rio one must travel by boat. Homes and businesses on the Rio Dulce have a boat dock ...cruisers usually have a dinghy with a small outboard so getting around is easy. Travelers arriving by land will have to hire a speedboat (lancha) to get around. The people along the Rio Dulce are among the friendliest. The Rio Dulce is a favorite vacation spot for many wealthy Guatis. Emphasis is on boating and water sports. Backpackers and travelers from all parts of the world use Rio Dulce as a jumping-off point for trips into the Peten, the rest of Guatemala, and to Belize and Honduras.

Guide to visiting Flores & Tikal Guatemala (2019) Mayan Ruins
In this episode we stay on in the picturesque town of Flores in Guatemala and share with you our experience of visiting the Mayan site of Tikal.
Flores is a small and beautiful town located on and island in a lake. The island is easily accessible as it is connected to .the mainland by a bridge. We show you all the island. Flores is a meca for tourist arriving in Guatemala from Belize or as a final stop before heading to Belize and is the main place that tourists stay to visit the Mayan Ruins of Tikal.
We took a day tour to the Mayan Ruins of Tikal, which are located approximate one and a half hours drive from Flores. A site filled with mystery - make sure you have a guided tour as the guides are very knowledgable and without them you would be walking around the ruins and tikal without learning anything about the Mayan history or way of life - they're also great for spotting and pointing our wildlife on the way.
We recommend visiting Tikal early in the morning as by 11am the weather is very hot and nearly 40 degrees celsius. We left at 4.30am and there is a tour that leaves around 3am if you want to watch the sun rise over the ruins.
Thanks for watching

ABOUT US:
We’re traveling full time, living on our own terms and showing you the up-close-and-personal details of us figuring it out along the way. Sometimes it’s about navigating big, life-altering decisions. Sometimes it’s about navigating the seemingly lawless free-for-all that is driving in Hanoi. It’s moments of triumph and moments of panic. The good, the bad, the ugly – and most importantly, the real and real funny.
We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.” Just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem. We believe the world’s a more interesting place when people reject convention in favor of what they actually care about. This is us putting that idea to the test – one budget spreadsheet, RV renovation and mountain-peak drone video at a time.
Jungle hike in Guatemala!
Jungle walk in the Mayan City of Tikal. The sound is as impressive as the view - you'll hear a cacophony of monkeys, birds and other insects sounding the jungle's alarm clock. A truly magical experience! #Tikal #JungleHikes #TikalTours #GuatemalaTours #CentralAmericaTours

Guatemala's DOPE Jungles!
Epic jungle adventure was not my first expectation when planning my trip to Guatemala with Vivid Roots & Hopscotch the Globe, but let me tell you... it should be on everyone's list!! Guatemala has spectacular jungles that have so much to offer its visitors. While on the way to the deep jungle of Guatemala, we stayed at Hotel Backpackers, which is a hostel that donates its profits to Casa Guatemala, a nonprofit organization that helps impoverished kids improve their lives.
We then had to take a boat to get to our next accommodation in Guatemala's jungle, Finca Tatin. This was a special place! It's set on the beautiful Rio Dulce in Guatemala and feels like you are staying with family. They have home cooked meals and hammocks. Who can say no to that?!
Some of the activities we did in the Guatemalan jungle included hiking into a cave with helmets and headlamps, swimming in a pitch black cave of the tiger, visiting hot springs and jumping off waterfalls, meeting baby toucans, experience the Guatemala jungle sounds, hiking through the jungle, and more.
The jungles of Guatemala exceeded my expectations and I would LOVE to return and focus on just the jungles again!

Top 10 Hippie Travel Destinations
Top 10 Hippie Travel Destinations
The sixties may be long gone but the hippies haven't. With alternative lifestyles which embraced peace, love and a whole lot of tripping out, the hippies had a profound influence on culture as we see it today. They still congregate in few corners of the world, practicing the ideals which they believe in and reliving the age which they so adamantly fought to keep alive. We look at some of these places where their spirit roams.
