2013 Magnetic Island holiday travel guide Into Water Travel Series part 2
A visit to Townsville isn't complete without spending some time over on Magnetic Island.
This tropical island offers a world of fun and adventure to experience, with over 20km of walking tracks and 23 bays and beaches to explore.
The short quick trip over to Maggi (as it is affectionately called by the locals) is quite picturesque so is a good time to get your camera out. When we arrived we decided to hire a car from C:Drive Car Rentals as it is quite a large island and a car would make sure that we got around nice and easily. There are also buses if you don't want to hire a car.
We had a pretty action packed day which was awesome, but I would suggest staying on the island a few days to really make the most of it. There is a lot of accommodation there from backpackers to 5* resorts.
We made sure that we had a full day of fun and adventure and went out jet skiing and on tube rides with Jet Ski Hire Magnetic island ( jetskihiremi.com.au ); paid a visit to the local wildlife park at Bungalow Bay Koala Village ( bungalowbay.com.au ) where we hugged a koala and crocodile; had an amazing seafood lunch at the marlin Bar; went snorkeling along their fringing reefs in their bays and beaches; saw a koala in a tree in the wild on their Forts Walk; and topped our day off with a sunset stretch limo ride with Magnetic Limousines ( magneticlimousines.com.au ) to delicious dinner and cocktails at Noodies on the Beach ( noodiesonthebeach.com ).
Maggie Island Jet Ski Run - 03 Dec 2016
What a great start to an awesome weekend... Got up nice and early, and headed out on our jet skis across to Magnetic Island for breakfast. The water was nice and calm, and the weather was just gorgeous. The boat ramp was full when we got there - which was a good sign that it was going to be a great day on the water. This was Chris and Lynn's second time on their new ski, and they loved it. As it was a fairly short run, I didn't take the drone or mount the go pro to the jet ski, so I've only used the head mount for the shots, which is why it's a bit shaky.

The island has long become established as a holiday destination with many hotels and several resorts in operation to cater for all levels of service. The public facilities and infrastructure on the island are managed by the Townsville City Council. The island is part of the electoral district of Townsville in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The island is also part of the Federal seat of Herbert, which is represented by Ewen Jones.
Naming
The name of the island came about because of the apparent /magnetic/ effect it had on the ship's compass of Captain Cook as he passed the island when sailing up the east coast of Australia in 1770. People have since explored the general area of Magnetic Island with various instruments to discover what might have caused the effect that Cook reported, but nothing has been discovered. The island's mysterious magnetic effect is the basis for the 2015 speculative fiction novel 'A Tango with the Dragon.' The local name for the island is Maggie Isle / Maggie Island, or / The Island.
Natural heritage
The island is a haven for wildlife. 54% of the island is Magnetic Island National Park, which is mostly located on the steep hilly interior and rugged north-western side. The highest point on the island is Mount Cook reaching 497 m / 1,631 ft above sea level.
Magnetic Island is famous for its angling opportunities. Fish around the island include: blue marlin, black marlin, sailfish, mackerel, wahoo, giant trevally, dogtooth tuna, coral trout, mahi-mahi, tuna, red emperor and sea perch.
As of 2013, there are over 800 koalas estimated to be present on the island; this population represents the northern limit of their geographic range.
The pressure of coastal development has, in recent years, begun to make a significant impact on the island, which lies in the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. At present many millions of dollars in development are planned for the island and the impact of these has led to considerable opposition from some residents who fear the effects this development will have on the environmental values of Magnetic's lowlands which are not protected by the national park; these areas represent only 20% of the whole island, and of this 20%, most is freehold land and is already developed.

Island Tour
For our friends and family back home, here is a video tour of Magnetic Island. We drove from Nelly Bay to Horseshoe Bay, which are on opposite sides of the island. It is a topless car, so the audio isn't that great thanks to the wind, but you can still get a taste of the island life. Best part about driving from one end to the other: not a single stop light.
Magnetic Island, Australia
Auckland to Brisbane to Townsville to Magnetic Island (Car, Plane, Train, plane, taxi, boat, bus ... whew!) ... but WELL worth the trip. Stayed in a beautiful Holiday home that friends of ours own called Daggoombah. The Island is the resort island that time forgot. Most of it is national park so there is no built up areas apart from the ferry landing. its Waiheke 20 years ago. GREAT times!
