Grainharvest Breadhouse
3-105 Lexington Road, Waterloo, ON | 519-725-1920 | Grainharvest.ca
Grainharvest Breadhouse Inc opened their doors first on September 27, 1989. Two years prior to that, the two founding members, Hubert Wurm and Roland Berchtold moved from a small town in Austria to Canada. Both are extensively trained bakers and worked all their adult-life in this profession. Roland and Hubert gained knowledge by taking courses to learn the art of baking and collected experience by working in several European countries in the baking trade. When they first arrived in Canada they both worked for a bakery in Toronto, but they realized quickly that there was a demand for quality European breads and that it wasn't much available. So they started looking for a suitable area to start their own business. The Kitchener-Waterloo region seemed to be a good fit for the business venture; it has deep roots to the European culture they grew up in. Grainharvest Breadhouse devotion to quality and good tasting products, helped to develop quickly a good name as a bakery in the area and around. Soon after their first store on Lexington Road in Waterloo took off, the two opened another store in Kitchener on Loraine Avenue. In 1993 they added a new location on Weber Street in Kitchener, which they relocated in 2004 to Eby Street across from the new Kitchener Farmers Market. Since 2005 Grainharvest also has a stand at the St. Jacobs Farmers Market. In 2004 Grainharvest Breadhouse was named the Junior Achievement Royal Bank Retailer of the Year. Also later that year Grainharvest started a division specializing only in wheat- and gluten free baking, called Circle of Life Bakery. In 2009 Grainharvest Breadhouse gained an addition in their leadership team, David Nötzold joined the two existing partners. David grew up in a family owned bakery business in Germany. 2009 also marks Grainharvest's 20th anniversary and the three owners are currently employing more than 20 people, all of them play a big role in what Grainharvest has become over the last two decades.

Aiken-Rhett House Museum Historic Charleston foundation
The Aiken-Rhett House Museum, 48 Elizabeth Street, c. 1820, is unique in many ways. For example, it remained in the hands of family descendents for 142 years until it was sold to The Charleston Museum and opened as a museum house in 1975. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the house in 1995 and adopted a conservation approach to the interpretation of this important house and its outbuildings.
Located on the corner of Judith and Elizabeth streets, Charleston merchant John Robinson built the house in 1820 as a typical Charleston double house with a central hallway and two rooms on either side. The original front entrance was located on Judith Street, where the piazza, a Charleston term for a double side porch, is now located. When Robinson lost five ships at sea in 1825, he was forced to sell the house to meet his financial obligations. Subsequently, it became the property of William Aiken Sr. in 1827.
Aiken, an Irish immigrant who had accumulated a large fortune as one of the city’s leading merchants, used the house as a rental property. When he died suddenly in a carriage accident, his vast holdings were divided between his wife, Henrietta Wyatt Aiken, and his only son, William Aiken Jr.
In 1833, the young William Aiken and his new bride, Harriet Lowndes, decided to make the house their primary residence. They began an extensive renovation of the property. Three main changes took place: the front entrance was moved, the first floor was reconfigured, and a large addition was built onto the house. By all accounts, they created one of the most impressive residences in Charleston.
A successful businessman, rice planter, distinguished politician and governor of South Carolina, William Aiken Jr. was one of the state’s wealthiest citizens. Following a well-established tradition among Charleston’s elite, Governor Aiken and his wife traveled in Europe and returned with magnificent fine art and furnishings. In 1858, while abroad, Governor Aiken commissioned his cousin, Joseph Daniel Aiken, to design and oversee the construction of an art gallery, the only one of its kind in the city. Today, many of the objects acquired by the Aikens on their travels remain in the rooms for which they were purchased.
The Aiken family library, containing more than 2000 volumes mostly published in the 1800s, has recently been transferred to the Charleston Library Society archives and placed on long-term loan. Many of the books are signed by family members and were purchased on their travels through Europe.
Prior to the Civil War, the Aiken-Rhett House was maintained by a population of highly skilled enslaved African Americans who worked to sustain the Aikens’ high standards for elegant living and entertaining. Occupations within the household included carriage drivers, cooks, footmen, gardeners, laundresses, nursemaids, and seamstresses. A post Civil War document reveals the names of 14 slaves that lived at the Aiken-Rhett House and attended the family: Tom and Ann Greggs, and their son, Henry; Dorcas and Sambo Richardson and their children, Charles, Rachel, Victoria, Elizabeth, and Julia; Charles Jackson, Anthony Barnwell, and two carpenters, Will and Jacob. Many of these individuals remained in Charleston following Emancipation, and Jacob Gaillard and Henry Greggs lived and worked at the Aiken-Rhett House until their deaths in 1896 and 1908.
The back lot of the Aiken-Rhett House is where the slaves worked and lived, and they probably took their meals communally in the kitchen. A unique site, the Aiken-Rhett House retains both original outbuildings. One is the kitchen and laundry and the other a carriage and stable house, above which are found sleeping quarters. Many of the rooms had fireplaces, and paint evidence suggests these rooms were painted vibrant colors.
William Aiken, Jr. died at his summer home in Flat Rock, North Carolina, in 1887. He left his property to his wife and daughter. Harriet Aiken continued to live in the house until her death in 1892. Her daughter, Henrietta, and son-in-law, Major A.B. Rhett, raised their four sons and one daughter in the house. Upon Henrietta’s death, the house was divided between her children and their heirs. Two sons, I’On Rhett and Andrew Burnet Rhett, Jr. continued to live in the house until the mid twentieth century.
The Aiken-Rhett House is open, Mon-Sat, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sun, 2-5 p.m. (last tour begins at 4:15 p.m.).
Tickets are $12 adults; $5 children 6-16; under six free.
Visitors who are interested in visiting the Aiken-Rhett and the Nathaniel Russell House Museums can save $6 on adult tickets by purchasing a combination ticket. Tickets are redeemable for six months from purchase date and do not need to be used on the same day. Consider visiting both museums to experience the unique and different preservation methods at work in each museum.

The 10 WORST STATES for JOBS
Are ya out of work? If so, you’re in the minority. If you’ve been paying attention, only 3 and a half percent of the population is unemployed right now. That’s the lowest it’s been in the last 50 years.
And there’s plenty of jobs out there, too. Lots of companies can’t hire enough people, especially in blue collar industries like trucking and construction, in technology, and in high level health care.
If you don’t have a job now and you’re looking, it shouldn’t be long until you get one. If you’ve been out of work for a long time, you’re likely lazy. Except for very special circumstances.
So, the economy is booming and companies can’t grow fast enough to keep up with demand. But of course, there’s gonna be some states where the job scene is the worst. Not always terrible, but someone has to finish last right?
10. Oregon
In Oregon, the unemployment rate is currently 4.1% the 12th highest in the nation. But, we factored in more than just the current snapshot of the job situation to cast a wider picture.
We also measured job growth over the past year. There are 12 states with negative job growth right now, and three where job growth is zero. Oregon is one of those three.
So, a 4.1% unemployment rate and zero job growth rate means Oregon’s job quotient is 4.1.
9. West Virginia
No surprises that West Virginia is towards the bottom when it comes to jobs. The Mountain State’s 4.7% unemployment rate is the 5th worst in the country, but West Virginia’s job growth has been steady, growing at .4%, which is actually the 6th highest rate in the US. That gives West Virginia a job quotient score of 4.3.
Now lets compare that to our best state for jobs in the USA, Colorado, which has a 2.7% unemployment rate and a .8% job growth rate for a job quotient of 1.9. The state with the lowest unemployment rate is Vermont, where only 2.2% of the population is out of work.
New Jersey and Alabama are tied with Colorado with the best current job growth rates.
8. Kentucky
Here in Kentucky, the unemployment rate is 4.4% which is the 7th highest rate, and the job growth is -.1%.
-.1% means that there have been a loss of about 18,000 jobs over the last year here.
Like other states, Kentucky’s job gains came in health care, education and manufacturing, and the state saw job losses in mining and logging, as the US is slowly moving towards cleaner energy like natural gas.
7. North Carolina
North Carolina has a 4.1% unemployment rate, which is the 12th worst, but the Tar Heel state saw it’s job sector shrink by .4%, which is the 3rd highest rate of job losses in the nation.
6. Michigan
In Michigan, the numbers are very similar to those in North Carolina. A 4.2% unemployment rate and a -.3% job growth rate, resulting in a job quotient of 4.5.
Michigan has lost 6,000 jobs in manufacturing. Some people have said that a trade war with China is part of the problem. Other states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have seen similar dips in manufacturing jobs.
Of course, the auto industry is a big deal in Michigan. But slowing sales and rising inventories are leading to slight production cuts and job losses. Basically, people are buying less cars lately.
5. Washington
In Washington, the unemployment rate is 4.6%, the 6th highest in the nation. And the job rate has shrunk by -.2% in the last year.
The state of Washington saw a net loss of 1,600 jobs in the last reporting month. The largest job growth was in retail, technology and construction. Manufacturing jobs are down here, too, but unlike other states we’ve seen, Washington lost jobs in education and healthcare.
4. Arizona
Here in the state of Arizona, the unemployment rate is really low at 4.9%, but the job growth rate is climbing. Over the last year, Arizona did add a net 27,000 jobs, which is about average.
3. New Mexico
Here in New Mexico, the unemployment rate is tied with Arizona at 4.9%. However, unlike Arizona, which is making strides, New Mexico’s job growth rate was essentially zero.
So that means 1 in 20 people is out of work, and will likely remain out of work for the foreseeable future.
2. Alaska
Next up is Alaska, which has the nation’s highest unemployment rate at 6.2%. That’s almost twice the national average.
There are a few reasons for Alaska’s high jobless rate. Alaska has a lot of seasonal jobs that only happen in the summer. This includes tourism, commercial fishing, and firefighting.
However, on the bright side, the job growth rate here is .3%, so that’s promising.
1. Mississippi
Here in the Magnolia State, the unemployment rate is a little better than Alaska, at 5.5%. However, Mississippi has seen a -.5% job decline in the last year, the worst in the nation.
