Nakasendo Trip 4K
The Kiso area is located in the mountainous Nagano Prefecture and famously includes a length of the Nakasendo (central mountain route) trail – one of the Five Routes of the Edo period. These routes were travelled by feudal lords making their annual visit to the capital of Edo (Tokyo). The Nakasendo trail spans 540 kilometres of stunning mountainous terrain between Kyoto and Tokyo and featured 69 station towns where travellers could rest during their long journey.

The Nakasendō (中山道 Central Mountain Route), also called the Kisokaidō (木曾街道), was one of the five routes of the Edo period, and one of the two that connected Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto in Japan. There were 69 stations (staging-posts) between Edo and Kyoto, crossing through Musashi, Kōzuke, Shinano, Mino and Ōmi provinces. In addition to Tokyo and Kyoto, the Nakasendō runs through the modern-day prefectures of Saitama, Gunma, Nagano, Gifu and Shiga, with a total distance of about 534 km (332 mi).
Unlike the coastal Tōkaidō, the Nakasendō traveled inland, hence its name, which can be translated as 中 = central; 山 = mountain; 道 = route (as opposed to the Tōkaidō, which roughly meant eastern sea route). Because it was such a well-developed road, many famous persons, including the haiku master Matsuo Bashō, traveled the road. Many people preferred traveling along the Nakasendō because it did not require travelers to ford any rivers.
Nakatsugawa-juku (中津川宿 Nakatsugawa-juku) was the forty-fifth of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō. It is located in the present-day city of Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. During the Edo period, Nakatsugawa-juku reached a population of over 1,230 people and contained over 175 homes. There are many historical artifacts remaining today, including a stone monument with a haiku written by Matsuo Bashō.
Magome-juku (馬籠宿 Magome-juku) was the forty-third of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō, an ancient road that connected Kyoto and Edo during the Edo period. It was also the last of eleven stations along the Kisoji, which was the precursor to a part of the Nakasendō, running through the Kiso Valley. This well-preserved section of the old route is in the present-day city of Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
The Nakasendo or 'Road through the Central Mountains' was part of feudal Japan's network of highways. Travellers moving between Kyoto and Tokyo took several days to travel the Nakasendo, staying overnight in Juku post towns. Today's visitors can walk sections of the original route by day and stay in local inns by night.
All our self-guided Nakasendo Trail tours offer the opportunity to spend a leisurely second night at the comfortable Ryokan in Kiso-Fukushima, part-way along the trail. Please ask for information about our tour extensions; enjoy spectacular views of Mount Fuji from the Hakone hot spring area and the rural village of Oshino Mura, or the peaceful, agricultural community of Asuka at a charming Japanese inn or with a local family for a unique homestay experience.
The 69 Stations of the Nakasendō (中山道六十九次 Nakasendō Rokujūkyū-tsugi) are the rest areas along the Nakasendō, which ran from Nihonbashi in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Sanjō Ōhashi in Kyoto. The route stretched approximately 534 km (332 mi) and was an alternate trade route to the Tōkaidō.

Magome Juku, Kiso Valley, Japan, 馬籠宿 | Canon 80D | Virtual Trip
#magome,#japan
Magome Juku is one of the many villages in Japan where it is still possible to get a glimpse of the traditional architecture of the Edo period, and where one can imagine what the life of the village could look like. (1600 -1868). Lost in Kiso Valley, Gifu Prefecture, this village lies between Kyoto and Tokyo, less than 100km east of Nagoya.
Magome Juku is a Shukuba, a post office, and it is the 43rd out of the 69 villages in one of the five imperial roads of the time, the Nakasendo Road. From Magome, it is possible to hike on this ancient road to the nearby village of Tsumago. Several agencies offer organized excursions more or less long, but this first stretch of 8km allows to see two of the most beautiful villages in the region, and to walk on the part probably the best preserved of this mythical road.

Narai Juku, Kiso Valley, Japan, 奈良井宿 - Canon 80D - Virtual Trip
#narai,#japan
Narai Juku is one of those traditional Japanese villages, located in Nagano Prefecture, about an hour from Nagano. It is the 34th step city of Nakasendô, the imperial road linking Edo to Kyoto. It is also the second village of Kisoji, the former trade route before the Nakasendô and which already connected 11 villages in the Kiso Valley.
Narai-juku was apparently the most prosperous village at the time and served as a stop for travelers, who then passed through the Torii Pass, the most difficult passage of the entire route.
The village stretches for almost a kilometer, wedged between the green hills and the Naraigawa River. The city was nicknamed the city of a thousand buildings, and even today, it is an exception in the valley, because it is the only village where so many old houses line up so far: is the largest Shukuba or post office of Nakasendô.
Narai Juku is administratively cut into three parts named Kanmachi (for the top of the village), Nakamachi (the middle of the village) and Shimomachi (the city below). The entire visit of the village takes between 1 hour and 2 hours.
Narai-juku has a very large number of accommodations, sumptuous and huge ryokan, and it is an excellent step that can allow you to cut the road to Kyoto or Tokyo.
From Narai, you can take the train to Kiso Fukushima, Nagiso or Nakatsugawa to visit the other historic lighthouse villages of this ancient imperial and commercial route.

Nakasendo and Kiso Valley Autumn 4K
The Kiso area is home to eleven of these historic station towns including the well preserved Magome, Tsumago and Narai. Another town, Kiso Fukushima, is a quaint riverside valley town famously featuring the Kiso Fukushima Checkpoint, Kozen-ji Temple (housing Asia’s largest dry rock garden) and dozens of old Ryokan backing onto the river for an aesthetic reminiscent of Kyoto. No trip to Kiso is complete without walking the Nakasendo trail, however there are also many other hiking opportunities in the surrounding mountains.

Hiking from Magome to Tsumago 馬籠、妻籠
The 8.3km hike connecting Magome in Gifu Prefecture and Tsumago in Nagano Prefecture peaks at the top of the steep pass with an elevation of 800m. The trail is a well maintained
section of the former Nakasendo, the route that connected Edo (present-day Tokyo) with Kyo (nowadays Kyoto) during the Edo Period (1603-1868).
In the second half of the 17th century the Tokugawa Shogunate made the Nagasendo one of the five major trunk roads that radiated out from Edo, the centre of government to the rest of the country.
The Tokaido, which followed the Pacific coast was the most important of the five routes unlike the inland and less heavily travelled Nakasendo. Magome post station and Tsumago post station, nestled deep in the mountains, have been wonderfully preserved to present a streetscape from a bygone age.
In old days there were inns, and eating and drinking establishments as well as carriers and horses to transport travellers and official documents to the next station on the road.
Travellers and merchants catering to travellers gathered here and the towns flourished as a result.
The ancient roads were particularly busy, as the Daimyo (ancient warlords) were required to spend alternate years in Edo - it is claimed that the aim was to drain their resources by the cost of maintaining second houses in Edo, and to prevent them being in one place long enough to plan a rebellion.
The standard method of travel was by foot, as wheeled carts were almost nonexistent and heavy cargo was usually sent by boat. Members of the higher class, however, travelled by elaborate litters. Women were forbidden to travel alone and had to be accompanied by men.
The Nakasendo is about 533km long. In the past it would take travellers 18 to 20 days to walk the full length of the road.

Sakai is a port city in Japan, just south of Osaka, on Osaka Bay. It's known for the Mozu Kofun, a group of large ancient burial mounds.
In the city center, surrounded by 3 moats, the massive, keyhole-shaped Daisen Kofun is the 5th-century tomb of the Emperor Nintoku. East, the Mihara History Museum displays artifacts from the nearby Kurohime-yama Kofun. The hexagonal, 1877 Old Sakai Lighthouse overlooks the harbor.

Japan Travel: Kiso Valley quality traditional crafts, Nagano09 Moopon
Japan Travel: Kiso Valley quality traditional crafts, Nagano09 Moopon
The Kiso Valley, or Kisodani, is located in Nagano Prefecture, and runs alongside the mountains of the Central Alps. An ancient 70 km trade route called the Kisoji was developed along the valley and served as a very important means of commerce in the area.
The Kisoji became even more important from the beginning of the Edo Period, when it was amalgamated with other routes in the formation of the 500 km long Nakasendo. The Nakasendo, meaning path through mountains, was one of the two means of transportation between Edo and Kyoto. It compared to the other principal transportation route at that time, the Tokaido, which ran along the sea shore.
Because of restrictions by the shogunate, travelers were always forced to make their trips on foot. As a result, post towns developed every few kilometers to provide travelers with places to rest, eat, and find accommodation during their arduous journey.
Along the Kiso Valley, a few post towns, particularly Magome, Tsumago and Narai, have been preserved to look as they did when they served travelers of the Nakasendo. Visitors are able to enjoy the stone paths and wooden buildings of a bygone age.
