Virtual Trip To Magome-Juku Village in Gifu Prefecture-Japan
Magome-juku (馬籠宿 Magome-juku?) was the forty-third of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō, an ancient road that connected Kyoto and Edo during the Edo period. It was also the last of eleven stations along the Kisoji, which was the precursor to a part of the Nakasendō, running through the Kiso Valley. This well-preserved section of the old route is in the present-day city of Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Visiting Nakatsugawa & The Nakasendo Trail in Japan
In this video we're in the stunning mountain town of Nakatsugawa in Japan. This little-visited part of the country is a real hidden treasure and is now one of our favourite places in all of Japan.
Nakatsugawa is a post town along the Nakasendo Trail which links Tokyo with Kyoto. Historically, this was an ancient trade route which was frequented by merchants and samurai warriors.
Today it's one of the most scenic and historical walkways in Japan and is one of the few places in the country where you can easily and independently plan a multi-day trek, staying in beautiful villages and guest houses along the way.
In this video we'll share not only the Nakasendo Way, but the awesome things to do in Nakatsugawa and around.
Special thanks to Nakatsugawa Tourism and Igloo Japan Ltd. for sponsoring this trip and making it possible. As always, all thoughts and opinions remain our own.

The Nakasendō (中山道 Central Mountain Route), also called the Kisokaidō (木曾街道), was one of the five routes of the Edo period, and one of the two that connected Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto in Japan. There were 69 stations (staging-posts) between Edo and Kyoto, crossing through Musashi, Kōzuke, Shinano, Mino and Ōmi provinces. In addition to Tokyo and Kyoto, the Nakasendō runs through the modern-day prefectures of Saitama, Gunma, Nagano, Gifu and Shiga, with a total distance of about 534 km (332 mi).
Unlike the coastal Tōkaidō, the Nakasendō traveled inland, hence its name, which can be translated as 中 = central; 山 = mountain; 道 = route (as opposed to the Tōkaidō, which roughly meant eastern sea route). Because it was such a well-developed road, many famous persons, including the haiku master Matsuo Bashō, traveled the road. Many people preferred traveling along the Nakasendō because it did not require travelers to ford any rivers.
Nakatsugawa-juku (中津川宿 Nakatsugawa-juku) was the forty-fifth of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō. It is located in the present-day city of Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. During the Edo period, Nakatsugawa-juku reached a population of over 1,230 people and contained over 175 homes. There are many historical artifacts remaining today, including a stone monument with a haiku written by Matsuo Bashō.
Magome-juku (馬籠宿 Magome-juku) was the forty-third of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō, an ancient road that connected Kyoto and Edo during the Edo period. It was also the last of eleven stations along the Kisoji, which was the precursor to a part of the Nakasendō, running through the Kiso Valley. This well-preserved section of the old route is in the present-day city of Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
The Nakasendo or 'Road through the Central Mountains' was part of feudal Japan's network of highways. Travellers moving between Kyoto and Tokyo took several days to travel the Nakasendo, staying overnight in Juku post towns. Today's visitors can walk sections of the original route by day and stay in local inns by night.
All our self-guided Nakasendo Trail tours offer the opportunity to spend a leisurely second night at the comfortable Ryokan in Kiso-Fukushima, part-way along the trail. Please ask for information about our tour extensions; enjoy spectacular views of Mount Fuji from the Hakone hot spring area and the rural village of Oshino Mura, or the peaceful, agricultural community of Asuka at a charming Japanese inn or with a local family for a unique homestay experience.
The 69 Stations of the Nakasendō (中山道六十九次 Nakasendō Rokujūkyū-tsugi) are the rest areas along the Nakasendō, which ran from Nihonbashi in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Sanjō Ōhashi in Kyoto. The route stretched approximately 534 km (332 mi) and was an alternate trade route to the Tōkaidō.

Vlog#5 | Magome | Back to Edo Period in Central Japan | Travel Japan | Cinematic Vlog
Thank you for watching my video!
Magome Juku is located near the border between Gifu and Nagano prefecture in central Japan. It was one of the 69 stations of Nakasendo, an ancient road between Kyoto and Edo(Tokyo) in Edo Period, and it has a special atmosphere of old Japan, as you can see in this video.
Because Magome is a quite small area, you can also go to Tsumago(妻籠), Naegi Castle Ruins(苗木城跡) and so on, which are near Magome.

#magome,#japan
Magome Juku is one of the many villages in Japan where it is still possible to get a glimpse of the traditional architecture of the Edo period, and where one can imagine what the life of the village could look like. (1600 -1868). Lost in Kiso Valley, Gifu Prefecture, this village lies between Kyoto and Tokyo, less than 100km east of Nagoya.
Magome Juku is a Shukuba, a post office, and it is the 43rd out of the 69 villages in one of the five imperial roads of the time, the Nakasendo Road. From Magome, it is possible to hike on this ancient road to the nearby village of Tsumago. Several agencies offer organized excursions more or less long, but this first stretch of 8km allows to see two of the most beautiful villages in the region, and to walk on the part probably the best preserved of this mythical road.

Narai Juku, Kiso Valley, Japan, 奈良井宿 - Canon 80D - Virtual Trip
#narai,#japan
Narai Juku is one of those traditional Japanese villages, located in Nagano Prefecture, about an hour from Nagano. It is the 34th step city of Nakasendô, the imperial road linking Edo to Kyoto. It is also the second village of Kisoji, the former trade route before the Nakasendô and which already connected 11 villages in the Kiso Valley.
Narai-juku was apparently the most prosperous village at the time and served as a stop for travelers, who then passed through the Torii Pass, the most difficult passage of the entire route.
The village stretches for almost a kilometer, wedged between the green hills and the Naraigawa River. The city was nicknamed the city of a thousand buildings, and even today, it is an exception in the valley, because it is the only village where so many old houses line up so far: is the largest Shukuba or post office of Nakasendô.
Narai Juku is administratively cut into three parts named Kanmachi (for the top of the village), Nakamachi (the middle of the village) and Shimomachi (the city below). The entire visit of the village takes between 1 hour and 2 hours.
Narai-juku has a very large number of accommodations, sumptuous and huge ryokan, and it is an excellent step that can allow you to cut the road to Kyoto or Tokyo.
From Narai, you can take the train to Kiso Fukushima, Nagiso or Nakatsugawa to visit the other historic lighthouse villages of this ancient imperial and commercial route.

Japan Travel - Hiking the Samurai Trail (from Magome to Tsumago) in Kiso Valley, Japan
Natasha Rooney is in Kiso Valley with Liam on this hike in Japan. They are walking from Magome to Tsumago, two of 69 towns along the Nakasendo route -- also called the Samurai Trail, -- connecting Tokyo and Kyoto.
The Kiso Valley is famous for its hiking trails and pretty and historic post towns, which have been preserved and offer accommodation for day trippers who are walking or touring by bus. Look for the ichirizuka - distance markers, denoting every 3.9 km (or one ri). For more information, see
The trail between Tsumago and Magome is the best preserved section of the Nakasendo and takes about 2-3 hours. This includes stopping at the Friends of Tsumago teahouse and viewing the 2 waterfalls, O-daki and Me-daki. Read more at

Tony Davis writes:
It's called the Nakasendo Trail, a 533-kilometre route through the spectacular mountains that once linked Kyoto, the home of the Japanese emperor, with Edo, the political capital (now known as Tokyo).
Much of the original trail has been covered with roads, railways and pachinko parlours, but some of the original legs remain, wending through forests, rice paddies and historic wooden villages. In some places, the trail has scarcely changed in hundreds of years, and is as close to authentic old Japan as you'll ever find.

You'll still need to pay taxes and fuel charges for your flight, which usually come out to between $5 to $25 per flight. Naturally, compared to the normal ticket price of $400 (domestic) or $1,200 (international), these taxes and fuel charges are a steal.

Historic Streets of Narai-juku on the Nakasendo Way | The Real Japan, Nagano Prefecture | HD
Narai-juku is the longest post town in Japan. Gradually descending along the Narai River, Narai-juku stretches approximately one kilometer along the old Nakasendo Road.
During the Edo era (1603-1868), the Nakasendo Road was one of the main routes linking Edo (the old name for Tokyo) and Kyoto.
The eleven local villages from Neikawa-juku to Magome-juku on the route called Kisoji (Kiso road) are well-known sightseeing spots.
Particularly in Narai-juku, the view of the old street in the area has been maintained and the houses, built using unique local techniques, are of historical and academic value.
This film begins at Shizume Shrine (the village's shrine) at the foot of the Torii Pass, which marks the end of Narai-juku on the Kyoto side.
An annual festival (designated an intangible cultural asset) is held on 12th August, where people in the town gather and walk through these streets to music created on Japanese flutes, drums and shamisen.
I strongly recommend visiting this small village in the mountains. It's a great way to experience and feel the atmosphere of old Japan!

This is a short documentary of the video I compiled during my Japan Trip.
Magome-juku (馬籠宿) was the forty-third of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō, an ancient road that connected Kyoto and Edo (modern day Tokyo) during the Edo period. It was also the last of eleven stations along the Kisoji. This well-preserved section of the old route is in the present-day city of Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Takayama (高山市) is a city located in Gifu, Japan. Takayama is best known for its inhabitants' expertise in carpentry. It is believed carpenters from Takayama worked on the Imperial Palace in Kyoto and on many of the temples in Kyoto and Nara. The city came under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate. However, the high altitude and separation from other areas of Japan kept the area fairly isolated, allowing Takayama to develop its own culture over about a 300-year period. In this video you will observe a traditional shopping street - much like how it would have being in the Edo period.
