Weird tropical fruit - Marang / Tarap - Davao Philippines
This is a Marang that my wife Leddie and I picked up at the Magsaysay Green Market in Davao Philippines. It is good and sweet but it smelled like a smoky burnout from a car tire. Not quite the same smell or taste of a Durian..

DAISY MAE WALKING TOUR DAVAO PROVINCE + FRESH FRUIT PRICES MINDANAO
SURPRISINGLY ENOUGH is what you are about to see in regards to the price of fresh fruits and vegetables in the Philippines is quite depressing for the following reasons;
1] Filipinos on average make less than 40 pesos per hour and the cost of pineapples for 50 pesos per kilo.
That would mean the average Filipino would have to work one hour and 15 minutes to buy one kilo of pineapple on an island
That supplies much of the world with Pineapples.!
If you converted that into American monies where the average worker MAKES $15 per hour equates to the equivalent of about $20 per kilo or $10 per pound for a Fruit.
UNDERSTANDING of course that this is the ASIA'S capital of GROWING pineapples And in my opinion is totally unfair to the local Filipino family.
The fact that they cannot purchase fruits and vegetable market without going bankrupt just doesn't seem like A just and fair enterprise..
2] upping the ante at the fruit and vegetable market on the price of mangoes which are now the equivalent of 2 hours wages for the average Filipino.
HOWEVER in both of these RIDICULOUS DISPARITIES you must understand that the average Filipino can only save at best 10 pesos per hour for an actual savings account to purchase food.
This would mean the average Filipino would have to work for 5 hours to buy one 1 kg of pineapple.
AND In order to purchase MANGOES The average Filipino would have to work for 8 hours to purchase 1 kg of MANGELS
ONCE AGAIN converting this into American dollars at $15 per hourThe cost of a kilogram of PINEAPPLE would be $75 per kilo.
MANGOES would cost $125 per kilogram based on the system I just explained that saving 10 pesos per hour.
CONSIDERING these prices are only a sampling of what is produced on the island of Mindanao the price disparity for wages earned and costs of goods does not allow the WORKING CLASS FILIPINO the ability to purchase healthy foods for their family and thus puts them in an endless spiral of LOW QUALITY NOURISHMENT AND NUTRIENTS Even from foods grown on their own islands.
MANGOES sold on the island of Bohol on 125 pesos Per kilogram and equates to 12 1/2 hours of savingsat 10 pesos per hour.
EQUATING back to American wages, it would mean Or rather equate to $187.50 per Kilogram of PINEAPPLE.
This same disparity between wages and costs of healthy foods is right across the board in the Philippines and why Filipinos can only afford rice and on occasion for a family of 4 or 6 people perhaps 1 kg of meat for a month and very rarely do you see the average Filipino family shopping for vegetables in any store in the island of Bohol.
When you do see a Filipino or Filipina shopping for fruits and vegetables typically they buy a quarter of a kilogram of garlic and or onions and maybe one head of But that is a rarity.
The Filipinos you see in my FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLE video are typically RESTAURANT OWNERS purchasing food for people in commercial restaurants or for small stores along the side of the road where the portions are minuscule at best.
I personally could eat 5 or more individual portions in the small stores +3 portions of RICE and would not Feel bloated.
The average Filipino purchases one small portion of food for lunch for 20 pesos which is probably about 3 1/2 ounces of vegetableS and one small portion of rice which is about 6 ounces and that would be there breakfast or lunch for dinner meal totaling 30 pesos and or the equivalent of 45 minutes work.
And this should give you an understanding why Filipinos are at a disadvantage when it comes to wages and healthy foods.
IN REGARDS to Daisy walk around by the river and Daisy Mae thinking about swimming in the river I hope you understand that she was only KIDDING and you can see by the way the soil is scratch that that soil is impregnated with various forms of pollutants and oils and soaps that are being dumped into the natural streams and rivers in the Philippines including certain forms of bacteria which we won't mention.

Catching Durians Anyone?
Durian is a fruit covered with lots of sharp spikes all around it. I never thought it was possible to catch it with bare hands until I saw this right at Davao City's Magsaysay Park. Sorry for the shaky video. This was the time when I was using a low resolution pen camera with some video capability. A long time ago. This is my very first on YouTube many years ago.

Canadian Canoes With Motors In Philippines, Lake Naujan, Mindoro
Mindoro is well known for its beaches, mountains and beautiful tourism spots. Most people will head to a place called Puerto Galera (which I am sure is stunning) but...
My Mindoro mission has been something unique to many other foreigners who have travelled here. The next few videos will be very raw, and just some very rough, real and beautiful adventure on this amazing island!
When I first arrived on the island of Mindoro I stopped at a fruit-stand near Socorro. It was there I learned about Lake Naujan, and the surrounding area. This video has everything from green honey, to dug-out Canadian style canoes with motors, to alien looking natural hot springs. It is a beautiful example of how diverse and un-expecting your adventures can be in this country. You never know what you might find!
*** The green honey may prove to be a gimmick... but... I still think it is amazing you can get honey that is green in colour! That to me is ayus! It actually tastes unique and delicious! We have been using it in our turmeric tea!
One day at a time, One random canoe adventure with Kuya at a time... #BecomingFilipino

SUMMARY

The Philippines ( ( listen) FIL-ə-peenz; Filipino: Pilipinas [ˌpɪlɪˈpinɐs] or Filipinas [ˌfɪlɪˈpinɐs]), officially the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas), is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia. Situated in the western Pacific Ocean, it consists of about 7,641 islands that are categorized broadly under three main geographical divisions from north to south: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The capital city of the Philippines is Manila and the most populous city is Quezon City, both part of Metro Manila. Bounded by the South China Sea on the west, the Philippine Sea on the east and the Celebes Sea on the southwest, the Philippines shares maritime borders with Taiwan to the north, Vietnam to the west, Palau to the east and Malaysia and Indonesia to the south.
The Philippines' location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and close to the equator makes the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons, but also endows it with abundant natural resources and some of the world's greatest biodiversity. The Philippines has an area of 300,000 km2 (120,000 sq mi), according to the Philippines Statistical Authority and the WorldBank and, as of 2015, had a population of at least 100 million. As of January 2018, it was the eighth-most populated country in Asia and the 12th most populated country in the world. Approximately 10 million additional Filipinos lived overseas, comprising one of the world's largest diasporas. Multiple ethnicities and cultures are found throughout the islands. In prehistoric times, Negritos were some of the archipelago's earliest inhabitants. They were followed by successive waves of Austronesian peoples. Exchanges with Chinese, Malay, and Indian nations occurred. Then, various competing maritime states were established under the rule of datus, rajahs, sultans or lakans.
The arrival of Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer leading a fleet for the Spanish, in Homonhon, Eastern Samar in 1521 marked the beginning of Hispanic colonization. In 1543, Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos named the archipelago Las Islas Filipinas in honor of Philip II of Spain. With the arrival of Miguel López de Legazpi from Mexico City, in 1565, the first Hispanic settlement in the archipelago was established. The Philippines became part of the Spanish Empire for more than 300 years. This resulted in Catholicism becoming the dominant religion. During this time, Manila became the western hub of the trans-Pacific trade connecting Asia with Acapulco in the Americas using Manila galleons. As the 19th century gave way to the 20th, the Philippine Revolution quickly followed, which then spawned the short-lived First Philippine Republic, followed by the bloody Philippine–American War. Aside from the period of Japanese occupation, the United States retained sovereignty over the islands until after World War II, when the Philippines was recognized as an independent nation. Since then, the unitary sovereign state has often had a tumultuous experience with democracy, which included the overthrow of a dictatorship by a non-violent revolution. It is a founding member of the United Nations, World Trade Organization, Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, and the East Asia Summit. It also hosts the headquarters of the Asian Development Bank. The Philippines is considered to be an emerging market and a newly industrialized country, which has an economy transitioning from being based on agriculture to one based more on services and manufacturing. Along with East Timor, the Philippines is one of Southeast Asia's predominantly Christian nations.
