About MWLS :
Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary (Bengali: মহানন্দা) is located on the foothills of the Himalayas, between the Teesta and Mahananda rivers. Situated in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, India. it comes under Darjeeling Wildlife division and can be reached from Siliguri in 30 minutes. Sukna, the gateway to the sanctuary, is only 13 km from Siliguri and 28 km from Bagdogra airport. The sanctuary sprawls over 159 Sqkm of reserve forest and was started as a game sanctuary in 1955. In 1959, it got the status of a sanctuary mainly to protect the Indian bison and royal Bengal tiger, which were facing the threat of extinction.
There are several species of birds at Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary which includes some very endangered species like Rufous-necked Hornbill, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Great Hornbill etc. Among the others swallow, swift, thrush, babbler, warbler, roller, minivet and sunbird can be found in abundance.
I visited MWLS in November, 2019 from Alipurduar and stayed at Shivkhola where I found these birds -

15. Drongo.
I went for birding. So, I searched only for Birds but still I found Water Monitor, Monkeys, two different kind of Spider. I roam only in birding zone.

Sevoke to Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary Riding.
Sevoke is a town near Siliguri in the Darjeeling District of West Bengal State of India on the border with Sikim State. It is a part of Dooars. Many army and BSF camps are located in the area. The Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in this area. National Highway NH 31 passes through the town. NH 31A connects this town to Gangtok.
Latpanchar & Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary : The Place of Rufous-necked hornbill # 5
Latpanchar and Rufus Necked Hornbill or Long-tailed broadbill just superimpose on each other. If you understand the feeling, then it was right to you if you don’t then you will say how? Latpanchar is the name of the place which is located in the sub-Himalayan area. It a name of a village of Darjeeling district, it is just nearly 50 to 60 km from NJP (New Jalpaiguri railway station) Via kalijhora more. There is numerous homestay are available.
I am going to share on of best homestay with very good food and birding guide details below.
We Started journey from Shelda by Padatik express. But I will suggest don’t go by Padatik express because it reaches NJP too late. So you are going to miss half a day. The list is given below.
You can go by shared taxi from NJP to kalijhora, from kalijhora you might gate another shared jeep or any other running car up to Latpanchar. This is the cheapest transport; you might spend only INR:(50+50) 100.00 per head. But there is some uncertainty.
A. You might have to wait for a long time at NJP for searching the shared jeep and after also u might have to wait a long time for running jeep for Latpanchar at Kalijhra. If you are lucky u can get a running jeep from NJP only.
B. You can take an auto from NJP to Siliguri more and take a bus up to kalijhora. So, Cost will be INR 20.00 NJP to Siliguri more and nxt INR 50.00 up to kalijhora more by bus.
Another option is for those don’t want any hassle and more money to spend. Take a car from NJP to Latpanchar. Cost around INR 1500.00 to 2000.00 depending on your burgading skills.
Next step is accommodation. The Latpanchar homestay service one of the oldest homestay which links given below. There are many more homestays are avail there. But I have tasted 3 of them. I found Latpanchar homestay service is best to me which is own by Mr. Sabbir Shuba. I will give the link below. Another option also good but not as good with the previous one.

লাটপানচার :-
পাহাড়ে যাওয়া যদি নেশা হয় আর বার্ড ওয়াচিংয়ের হবিও থাকে, তবে আপনার বেড়াতে যাওয়ার আদর্শ জায়গা হতে পারে লাটপানচার। শিলিগুড়ি থেকে মাত্র ৪০ কিমি দূরত্ব পেরলেই এই পাহাড়ি গ্রাম৷ ১৯২৬ সালে ব্রিটিশরা সিঙ্কোনা চাষের সূচনা করেছিল এখানে৷ এখনও লাটপাঞ্চোরের মূল কর্মকাণ্ড সিঙ্কোনা প্ল্যান্টেশনকে ঘিরেই৷ অনেকটা চা বাগানের মতোই সকাল হলেই সিঙ্কোনা-শ্রমিকরা দল বেঁধে বাগানের পথে রওনা দেন৷ চা বাগানের ম্যানেজার, অ্যাসিস্ট্যান্ট ম্যানেজারদের মতো সুন্দর বাংলোগুলো পাহাড়ের ঢালে দাঁড়িয়ে রয়েছে৷ এখানকার নাম-ধামে ব্রিটিশদের প্রভাব৷ কথায় কথায় ‘লাট’ জুড়ে দেওয়ার প্রবণতা৷ এখন যে বন বাংলোটি রয়েছে সেটি লাটকোঠিতে৷ পাঞ্চোর শব্দের অর্থ বেত৷ তার আগে জুড়েছে লাট৷ লাটপানচারের উচ্চতা 4200 ফুট ।
মহানন্দা ওয়াইল্ডলাইফ স্যাংচুয়ারির সবচেয়ে উঁচু জায়গাটা হল লাটপানচার। তিস্তার অপূর্ব ভিউ, সিঙ্কোনার বাগিচা আর বহু রকমের পাখি চোখে পড়বে এখানে গেলে। হর্নবিল, বার্ন সোয়ালো, সুলতান টিট-সহ আরও অজস্র পাখি। লাটপানচারে গিয়ে ইয়াব্বড় ক্যামেরা-সমেত ছবি শিকারীদের দেখা পাওয়াটাই স্বাভাবিক। স্থানীয় গাইডের সাহায্য নিলে বার্ড স্পট করতে সুবিধে হবে আরও। স্যাংচুয়ারির আনাচে কানাচে পায়ে হেঁটে ঘুরলেই চোখে পড়বে নানা ধরনের পাখি। যাওয়ার আগে একটু সেলিম আলির বই পড়ে নিতে পারেন!
কাছেই মংপু। রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের স্মৃতিবিজড়িত বাড়িটা দেখে আসতে পারেন এখান থেকে। লাটপানচারের খুব কাছেই চটকপুর গ্রাম। মাঝে একটা দিন ঘুরে আসতে পারেন সেখান থেকেও। লাটকোঠি, নামথিং পোখরি, মানা হিল্সও অবশ্যই ঘুরে আসবেন এখানে গেলে। এছাড়া পাঁচ কিলোমিটার মতো দূরের অহলদারাতেও যান অনেকে। সেখান থেকে কাঞ্চনজঙ্ঘার ভিউ অসাধারণ! তিস্তারও। পাহাড়ের সবুজ চোখ জুড়িয়ে দেয়। সবুজে মোড়া চারদিক আর পাহাড়ের ঢালে ছোট ছোট বাড়িগুলো দেখলে মনে হবে, বাকি জীবনটা বোধহয় সেখানেই কাটিয়ে দেওয়া যায়! হাঁটাহাঁটির অভ্যেস থাকলে জঙ্গলের মধ্যেই ছোট ছোট ট্রেক সেরে ফেলুন। ঘন শাল আর পাইন বনের পথ ধরে মর্নিং ওয়াক করতেও দারুণ লাগবে। অক্টোবর থেকে এপ্রিলের মধ্যেই লাটপানচার যাওয়ার সেরা সময়। গরমকালে গেলে বিকেলের দিকে একটু বৃষ্টি পেতে পারেন।
কীভাবে যাবেন: নিউ জলপাইগুড়িগামী যে কোনও ট্রেনে চেপে বসুন। এখান থেকে লাটপানচার মাত্র ঘণ্টাদেড়েকের রাস্তা। কালিঝোরার পর থেকে চড়াই রাস্তাটা একটু খারাপ পেতে পারেন। গাড়ি ভাড়া করে নিন নিউ জলপাইগুড়ি থেকেই।
কোথায় থাকবেন: থাকার জন্য রয়েছে লাটপাঞ্চোর হোমস্টে৷ এছাড়া বিশেষ বাড়িঘর নেই এখানে৷ অনেকেই সকালে এসে বিকেলে ফিরে যান৷ হোমস্টে-র যোগাযোগ: শ্রীমতি সঙ্গীতাসুব্বা, 9434855447 । আগে থেকে বুকিং করে রাখুন।
অহলদারা ভিউ পয়েন্ট: এই স্থানটি থেকেএকদিকে ডুয়ার্স ও তরাই সমভূমির 360 ডিগ্রি দৃশ্য এবং অন্যদিকে কালিম্পং,দার্জিলিং এবং সিকিম র পাহাড় দেখা যায় ।
অহলদারা থেকে কাঞ্চনজঙ্ঘার ভিউ অসাধারণ! তিস্তারও। পাহাড়ের সবুজ চোখ জুড়িয়ে দেয়। সবুজে মোড়া চারদিক আর পাহাড়ের ঢালে ছোট ছোট বাড়িগুলো দেখলে মনে হবে, বাকি জীবনটা বোধহয় সেখানেই কাটিয়ে দেওয়া যায়!বলা হয় যে অহলদারা র সূর্যোদয় টাইগার হিলের চেয়েও বেশি আকর্ষণীয়!
Latpanchar :-Latpanchar is a new tourist destination that is gaining fast popularity due to its unique location, grand view of the Himalayan range and the flora and fauna in the surrounding area. The small village is located in Kurseong division of Darjeeling district. At an altitude of about 4000 feet, Latpanchar is about 48 kms (2 hours) from New Jalpaiguri rail station and Bagdogra Airport.

Latpanchar is close to the core area of Mahananda Wild Life Sanctuary. Among the animals found here are the rare mountain goat (serow), tigers, leopards, gaurs, wild boars, different kinds of deer and monkeys, jungle cats, porcupines, civets, monitor lizards and snakes. Latpanchar is also famous for the medicinal plants it produces.
In the last few years, the area has come up very strongly as home to a few rare species of birds. Ornithology enthusiasts have started flocking here from all over India and abroad for the unique bird species such as the Himalayan Pied Hornbill.
The lake of Namthing (Namthing Pokhari) - Situated at an altitude of 4250 ft above sea level, the beautiful lake is the natural habitat for a number of rare species. Namthing Lake is only the second place in the region where you can see the Himalayan Salamander in the wild, the only other place being Jorpokhri.
Latkothi - about 4 km from Latpanchar. The mountain road through the Cinchona, Sal, Teak & Pine trees reaches here to disclose the wonder of nature. You can spend a day in this place or may further visit the Kuhi area with special permit from the forest department. Colorful butterflies and birds will welcome you to the region
Ahal Dara - This is the viewpoint from where you can watch the sunrise over the Himalayas.
Latpanchar can be reached from Kalijhora which is on the Highway connecting Sikkim with Bengal. From Kalijhora an uphill journey of about 13 kms will take you to Latpanchar.
