Kollam Beach - Kerala
Sea waves hitting the shores of Kollam beach in the Indian state of Kerala.
Kollam Beach also known as Mahatma Gandhi Beach, is a beach at Kollam city in the Indian state of Kerala.
The beach also features an park of international standard, the Mahatma Gandhi Park, which was inaugurated on 1 January 1961 by the then Vice President of India, Zakir Hussain. Kollam beach is one among the few beaches in Kerala with a lifeguard outpost. Lifeguards were stationed at the beach from 2005. Currently, Kovalam, Varkala and Kollam are the only beaches in south Kerala with lifeguard outposts.
Kollam Port is one of the oldest and most important ports for the international cashew trade on the Malabar Coast of the Arabian Sea. As of 2010, Kollam Port was the second largest port in Kerala after Cochin Port.
Kollam was once a favourite settlement of the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English in succession before Independence.
The port is protected by the Tangasseri Breakwater, extending about 1.1 miles (1.8 km) south-south east of Tangasseri Point. The exotic location and backwaters makes Kollam Beach one of Kerala's most popular tourist attractions.
On 22 June 2014, construction work started on a marine aquarium at Kollam Beach, which was first of its kind in the state of Kerala. The Harbour Engineering Department is constructing the aquarium at the eastern side of the beach on behalf of Kollam Municipal Corporation. The foundation stone for the project was laid in March and is expected to complete by December 2014. It will be a single storey aquarium with 40 large tanks to hold a diverse collection of marine life and will be an added attraction for visitors to Kollam beach.
The 144-foot (44 m) Tangasseri lighthouse built in 1902 is a major landmark at the beach.
Ruins of Portuguese / Dutch forts and 18th-century churches near the port remain as a memento of the Portuguese and Dutch rule of the area.

Thangassery Beach | Kollam | Kerala
Tangasseri is located about 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) from the city center and 71 kilometers (44 mi) from Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital. Archaeologists recently discovered Chinese coins and other artifacts along the coast, which reveal the historical background of the location. Kollam Port makes Tangasseri an important place on the world maritime map.
Tangasseri is a picturesque seaside village with a 3-kilometer long beach on which stands a 144 feet tall lighthouse—a silent sentinel warning seamen since 1902 of the treacherous reefs. There are also ruins of Portuguese and Dutch forts and 18th-century churches. The fishery harbor at Tangasseri is a basin for traditional fishermen, achieved by the construction of two breakwaters. The length of the main breakwater is 2100 m and of the leeward breakwater 550 m. This provides sufficient beach length for landing facilities for all operational craft. Tangasseri is home to Kerala's oldest schools, Mount Carmel Convent Anglo-Indian Girls High School and Infant Jesus School Kollam.

We took an early morning flight from Delhi and reached Trivandrum by 9:30. We booked a cab for Trivandrum Central Railway station and took a train to Varkala. We found train as the best mode of transportation, as it saves time and money. We booked our accommodation in Inda hotel, which is in walking distance from Varkala Cliff. A leafy property with airy, simple and decent rooms and the creativity in the design of café and the interior of the rooms is attractive.
We also got a companion while having lunch.
So we hired a scooty and the hotel staff helped us in getting one. And then we departed to Kollam. A drive along the coastal road is a delightful way to experience the splendid view. The beach on one side and the backwater on the other and riding in between them is an amazing experience. The Kappil beach is 7 km from Varkala.
Soon we reached Thangassery Lighthouse in Kollam which is 27 km from Varakala. The lighthouse was equipped with an elevator up to six floors and we have to climb some 30 steps to reach the top.
The view from the top of this 135 ft tall lighthouse covering Kollam city and harbour is breathtaking. We then departed to visit the Kollam beach, which is adjacent to the lighthouse and is 3 km in distance.
There are a number of small shops and stalls selling some amazing handicraft. And, if you get tired after all the fun, gorge on beach-side eateries that serve tempting eatables. And kite flying is a common activity here.
The beach also features a park called Mahatma Gandhi Park where you can spot a mermaid statue just opposite to the Kollam clock tower.
We then took a ride parallel to the sea and reached Eravipuram beach, which is 3 km south to Kollam. Dredger that washed ashore years ago is the major attraction of this beach.
A further 6 km ride from here we reached Lakshmipuram beach. The Paravur lake on one side and the clean, calm and romantic beach on the other side makes this place remarkable.
