Kanakakunnu Palace, Trivandrum, Kerala, India ( Thiruvananthapuram ) | Kerala tourism
Kanakakkunnu palace
Kanakakkunnu palace located about 800 meters north east of the Napier Museum in the heart of Trivandrum city, Kanakakunnu Palace is one of the last architectural vestiges of the colonial era. Built during the reign of Travancore king Sree Moolam Thirunal (1885−1924), the palace served as the main venue for royal banquets. Later Swathi Thirunal, one of Travancore’s popular rulers, refurbished the palace and constructed tennis courts in the premises. He also did use it for a few years as a summer retreat. Boasting a Kerala style facade, the Travancore royal family used the house to entertain guests. Inside you will see massive crystal chandeliers and an array of exquisite pieces of royal furniture – a testimony to the lavish lifestyle of the Thirunal kings who had a penchant for music and art. Add to it a picturesque setting on the crest of a small hill lush with meadows, grooves and flowering shrubs.
Now under the Kerala government’s wing, the palace complex walls-in the Nishagandhi open-air auditorium and Sooryakanthi auditorium. A popular haunt of culture vultures in the city, the auditoriums are the venues for various cultural meets and programs. The prestigious All India Dance Festival aka Nishagandhi festival is hosted annually by the Department of Tourism at the Nishagandhi open-air auditorium. Indian classical dance exponents from across the country come down to participate in the festival.

The Kerala State Beverages (M&M) Corporation handles potable liquor made out of Extra Neutral Alcohol, Beer/Wipe. Potable liquor is a consumable item containing potable Alcohol and other chemicals. There are good and bad effects of consuming liquor. The role the KSBC is channellising all kinds of liquor/beer/wine from manufacturers through out the country for the consumers in Kerala. Any non-availability of any item is the decision of the respective manufacturer not to sell the item in Kerala. The price at which an item is available in Kerala (as against any other places) is due to factors governing the pricing by the manufacturer and the State Excise and Sales Tax laws. As such KSBC is not restricting purchase of liquor from any manufacturer who is prepared to enter into a valid contract. KSBC performs the role of procuring liquor and take adequate steps to ensure the quality standards of liquor and place them to the consumer through the various channels of distribution enabling the consumer to take his preference. The liquor brought through KSBC contains the holographic stickers pasted on the bottle caps. The activity of KSBC confines to contracts for procurement and distribution. Consumer has to know his health condition while deciding to drink. Alcohol is not a freely marketable item like any other consumable but can be sold only through licence. In this point of view there is a message that consumer has to check his health while consuming liquor.

To the north, the ornate Napier Museum houses ancient Indian carvings, bronzes and natural-history specimens, while Sri Chitra Art Gallery holds miniature Indian paintings and work by lauded artist Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906). Nearby is Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, home to Bengal tigers, Asian elephants and Indian rhinos. To the south, the giant Dravidian-style Padmanabhaswamy Temple is dedicated to Vishnu, with a 7-tier entrance tower (gopuram). Along the coast are the popular beaches of Shankumugham and Kovalam.

Chala Market Thiruvananthapuram
Chala market is located opposite of te East fort central bus stand where all the city buses terminate. The main entrance is located at the junction between Gandhi park and KSRTC bus garage. This entrance takes you to the Chala market road which is the main shopping area. This road terminates on the Kanyakumari highway (earlier known NH-47 and now renamed as NH-66) at a distance of about 1.5 km.
Chala was officially established towards the end of 18th century by Raja Kesavadas, Dewan of Travancore. The idea was to make Chalai bazar the central point for the supply of commodities to the Travancore kingdom. The Killi and Karamana rivers nearby was used to transport goods to the market. However, Mathilakom records of the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple talk of a large market place that existed ‘near’ the temple, at least a century and a half before.Going further back to the 13th century, the composition Ananthapuravarnanam, which describes the capital city in detail, vividly describes a bustling marketplace with a fish market, textile market, provision market and so on. Merchants used to come in ships to trade at the market
The market is spread through the narrow 2 km road connecting Killipalam and East Fort, which runs from East to West. The by-lanes too have an array of shops. The shopping street also consists of Karupattikada Juma Masjid, which is popularly known as 'Chala Juma Masjid'. This juma masjid was built in the first quarter of the 20th Century and is considered to be one of the oldest mosques in the dis
