USA: TIBETAN BUDDHIST TEMPLE BUILT ON CALIFORNIAN COAST
English/Mute
A group of Americans have spent the past 21 years building a Tibetan Buddhist centre on the California coast.
They claims it's the biggest in the world outside China.
They say they've built the temple in order to ensure that any Tibetan Buddhists threatened by the Communist Chinese will have a safe house where they can maintain their culture.
Since the Chinese seized control of Tibet in 1959, thousands of Buddhist monasteries and libraries have been shut down or destroyed.
It is estimated that over one million people have been killed in the conflict with Chinese communists.
Many now fear Tibetan Buddhism and its civilisation could be wiped out for ever.
So a group of Buddhist followers in California built this temple.
They call it Odiyan: Land of the Enlightened.
They say it is a safe house for a culture and people under threat.
For more than two decades American Buddhist volunteers and inhabitants of Odiyan kept their gates locked to the outside world.
They have been building a home for a faith and a culture they fear will soon be annihilated within Tibet.
Now six large temples and a golden stupa, here on the Californian coast, represent a home from home for Tibetan Buddhism.
SOUNDBITE:
It is terrible what has happened in Tibet. Originally there were about 6,000 monasteries in Tibet, now there are about 13 and even then there are tremendous restrictions. Lama's great enlightened teachers have been killed or put in prison and that is such a loss for all of humanity.
SUPER CAPTION: Jack Petranker, American Buddhist
Thousands of manuscripts and ancient Buddhist teachings have been smuggled out of Tibet.
They have been transcribed into a vast library here at Odiyan.
Copies have been made and secretly take back into Tibet so that Buddhist teaching can continue.
The hundreds of Western volunteers who built Odiyan -- complete with prayer wheels and religious flags -- believe the Buddhist faith has something to offer Americans.
Insights on life, disease, love and death.
SOUNDBITE:
America is the right places for Odiyan because it is the land of religious freedom but also there is a tremendous openness and interest here. We have come to a time in our own culture where we know something is not working right and I think especially here on the Pacific rim, it is very natural to look to the culture of Asia and those traditions and understand that they have something to offer the West which is really precious.
SUPER CAPTION: Jack Petranker, American Buddhist at Odiyan
It took 12 (m)million dollars worth of materials to build Odiyan.
Buddhist teachings are popular with many of Hollywood's famous so much of the money came from celebrity donations.
All the construction labour was provided free by volunteers.
SOUNDBITE:
This is truly a labour of love and it is something as we contribute we find we get ten times the reward to ourselves.
SUPER CAPTION: Sylvia Gretchen, Odiyan Buddhist
More than one thousand years ago a Tibetan Buddhist prophet wrote:
When the iron bird flies and the horses run on wheels; Tibetans will be scattered throughout the world like ants, and the teachings of the Buddha will come to the land of the red man.
Those who built Odiyan believe that prophecy has become a reality -- here on the West coast of the United States.

Korean Buddhism
Korean Buddhism is distinguished from other forms of Buddhism by its attempt to resolve what it sees as inconsistencies in Mahayana Buddhism. Early Korean monks believed that the traditions they received from foreign countries were internally inconsistent. To address this, they developed a new holistic approach to Buddhism. This approach is characteristic of virtually all major Korean thinkers, and has resulted in a distinct variation of Buddhism, which is called Tongbulgyo, a form that sought to harmonize all disputes by Korean scholars. Korean Buddhist thinkers refined their predecessors' ideas into a distinct form.
As it now stands, Korean Buddhism consists mostly of the Seon lineage, primarily represented by the Jogye and Taego Orders. The Korean Seon has a strong relationship with other Mahayana traditions that bear the imprint of Chan teachings as well as the closely related Zen. Other sects, such as the modern revival of the Cheontae lineage, the Jingak Order, and the newly formed Won, have also attracted sizable followings.

Everything We do Matters 1/8
About the Talk
Twenty-five hundred years ago, when the Buddha was teaching what he had awoken to, his world was similar in many ways to our world today. There were great centers of culture, and there were lands of stagnation. There were rulers with great power who thirsted for even more, and there were oppressed people who wanted to live in peace. There were men who said that they alone held the key to spiritual secrets, and there were those who searched for different answers. There were people who had great wealth, and there were those who had nothing. There were people who said we must change, and there were those who denied there was anything wrong.
Perhaps that distant land and time is not that distant after all. Greed, anger, ignorance, and delusion are still very much with us. But they do not have to remain with us for each of us has the ability to transform them into selflessness, compassion and understanding.

The Six Bardos - How to Prepare for Death [2]
Khenpo Sherab Sangpo, a professor of Tibetan Buddhism in the Nyingma Lineage (bodhicittasangha.org), offers teachings on the “The Root Verses of the Six Bardos.” These tantric teachings were brought to Tibet by Padmasambhava in the 9th century and were taught to his closest 25 disciples. Padmasambhava’s pith advice for preparing for the natural transitions during life and death were rediscovered as a treasure text (terma) by the 14th century treasure revealer (tertön), Karma Lingpa, and form part of the close (short) lineage of terma transmission in the Nyingma tradition. This text is part of the cycle of revelations related to the peaceful and wrathful deities called Bardo Tödrol Chenmo,” in Tibetan, meaning The Great Liberation through Hearing in the Bardo,” and is known as “The Tibetan Book of the Dead” in the West. As Khenpo Sherab Sangpo states in his commentary, the cycle of the six bardos describes our journey through six states of consciousness. Each bardo has its own unique instructions and meditation practice. These six verses show what is to be practiced and what is to be realized in each bardo for liberation (enlightenment) from saṃsāra to occur. The four guided meditation sessions are on 1) recognizing the wisdom of emptiness by looking at the mind without thinking; 2) recognizing self-arising awareness by pausing the breath; 3) dharmakāya phowa practice through the seal of the view by resting in the non-conceptual nature of mind; and 4) recitation of the the noble Mahāyāna sūtra called The Wisdom for the Time of Death.”

Alan Watts - Mahayana Buddhism
Alan Watts talks about Mahayana Buddhism in 1960, from a series called Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life.
Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii
The Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii is a district of the Nishi (West) Hongwanji branch of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, a school of Mahayana Pure Land Buddhism.
Jodo Shinshu Buddhism was established in Hawaii as a result of the immigration of Japanese people to work the sugar plantations in Hawaii. The first Hongwanji temple in the Hawaiian islands was dedicated on March 3, 1889. In 1897, the Nishi Hongwanji in Kyoto, Japan began sending official ministers to establish temples for Japanese immigrants in Hawaii and the mainland United States. Since these early days, 36 temples have been established across the Hawaiian Islands, including the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin and the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin. The mission operates the Hongwanji Mission School and Pacific Buddhist Academy. It is administered separately from the Buddhist Churches of America, the umbrella organization of Jodo Shinshu temples in the continental United States. The mission headquarters is located at 1727 Pali Highway Honolulu, 21°18′57″N 57°51′7″W / 21.31583°N 57.85194°W / 21.31583; -57.85194Coordinates: 21°18′57″N 57°51′7″W / 21.31583°N 57.85194°W / 21.31583; -57.85194.[4]

Awaken to the Buddha Within Part 4/9
About the Talk
Over twenty-five hundred years ago a thoughtful, gentle prince became absorbed in the question of how to end suffering for all beings. He relinquished his life as a future great king to become a wandering seeker of the Way. After six years of searching, he sat down on a cushion of grass and vowed not to rise until he found the answer. Searching deep within himself, he realized the Way to liberation. This ordinary man had become “Buddha,” an awakened one.
Beginning with his life, Awaken to the Buddha Within explores what the Buddha experienced: from impermanence and causality to compassion and altruism. Understanding his teachings of morality, concentration, and wisdom will help us to find within ourselves the answers we ourselves are seeking today. Whether our goal is to be more caring of others while finding a calmer, wiser way of reacting to life’s daily challenges or to walk the path to enlightenment, the teachings of the Buddha will help us to progress as he himself did–one step at a time.
