Resting on the Eastern side of Australia's iconic Fraser Island, about half way along 75 Mile Beach, is the Maheno Wreck. It was built in 1905 and sold to a Japanese company for scrap in 1935. With the rudder removed they set about towing the Ocean Liner come hospital ship back towards Japan. During a severe storm along the Queensland coast, the ship broke away from its tow vessel and drifted onto Fraser Island. The salvage operation was deemed to expensive and the Maheno was left where she sits today.

A landmark on 75 Mile Beach in Fraser Island is the shipwreck of the Maheno. Maheno was originally built in 1905 in Scotland as a luxury passenger ship for trans-Tasman crossings. During the First World War the ship served as a hospital ship in the Mediterranean[1], Gallipoli[2], and the English Channel, before returning to a luxury liner. In 1935, the ship was declared outdated and on June 25, 1935 the ship was being towed from Melbourne to Japan for scrap metal when it was caught in a strong cyclone. A few days later, on July 9 1935 she drifted ashore and was beached on Fraser Island. During the Second World War the Maheno served as target bombing practice[citation needed] for the RAAF. The ship has since become severely rusted. Climbing on the shipwreck is not permitted.

SS Maheno was an ocean liner belonging to the Union Company of New Zealand that operated in the Tasman Sea, crossing between New Zealand and Australia, from 1905 until 1935. She was also used as a ship by the New Zealand Naval Forces during World War I. She was washed ashore on Fraser Island by a cyclone in 1935 where the disintegrating wreck remains as a popular tourist attraction.

Aerial footage and 4wding adventure of our visit to Queensland's stunning Fraser Island. During our four day stay we visited the Maheno Shipwreck, Eli Creek, Lake McKenzie and did the trip up to Sandy Cape through Ngkala Rocks. Our trip coincided with the kick off to the tailor season on Fraser and we ventured up the top of Indian Head and saw the hordes of fishermen trying their luck below.

Heading to Japan from Sydney the Maheno was to be melted down and be sold as scrap metal. It was on this journey that the Maheno was hit by an unseasonal cyclone off the coast of Fraser.
