The Liberation of The Wöbbelin Concentration Camp - May 2, 1945

On The Morning of April 30, 1945, the 82nd Airborne Division conducted an assault on the Elbe River near Bleckede, Germany. It was to be the unit's last combat operation. Two days later, the Division was in Ludwigslust where 150,000 soldiers from the German 21st Army surrendered. Division Commander Major General James Gavin said that the surrender of an entire army to on division was without precedent in American military history. But the surprises were not over. A short distance from the town, troops from the 82nd Division discovered a concentration camp - Wöbbelin. This video tells the story of the liberation of the camp with still photos and rare film footage.
