MAHONE BAY, NOVA SCOTIA
Mahone Bay is a town on the northwest shore of Mahone Bay along the South Shore of Nova Scotia in Lunenburg County. A long standing picturesque tourism destination, the town has recently enjoyed a growing reputation as a haven for entrepreneurs and business startups. The town has the fastest growing population of any municipality in Nova Scotia according to the 2016 census, experiencing 9.9% population growth.
The town is also known for a history of wooden boat building, it was the main industry of Mahone Bay in its earlier years. The Mahone Bay Museum explains and shows this history in detail. Until recent years the town's shipbuilding and boat-building heritage was celebrated by the Mahone Bay Wooden Boat Festival.
The view across the harbour is of three prominent churches: St James' Anglican; St John's Evangelical Lutheran; and Trinity United. It has become an iconic image of Nova Scotia, frequently photographed and featured on postcards and calendars. The town has a number of upscale shops and restaurants which almost universally are designed to appeal to the tourist trade, and sometimes shut down during the winter months. The town also has a plastics factory.

Time for us to continue our shore excursion in Halifax, Nova Scotia! I booked this tour through Norwegian Cruise Line though it is offered through most cruise lines. It is called: CELEBRATE OVER 150 YEARS! and here is the tour description from NCL's website:

Mahone Bay's trademark picture consists of three internationally known churches standing at the head of the harbor, symbolizing the quiet beauty and enduring spirit of this small town.
Lunenburg & Mahone Bay
Mahone Bay is a bay located on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, Canada along the eastern end of Lunenburg County.
Opening south directly onto the Atlantic, its eastern shore is formed by the Aspotogan Peninsula and its western shore is formed by the First Peninsula (of Lunenburg) and its landlocked extension named 'Heckmans Island'. The 'Chester Peninsula' juts several kilometres into Mahone Bay at roughly its midpoint.
The Town of Lunenburg, in Nova Scotia, Canada, was formally established in 1753 as the first British Colonial settlement in Nova Scotia outside of Halifax. These early settlers were from various parts of Germany, Switzerland, and the Montbeliard region of France. They ship imagefollowed in the footsteps of earlier Mikmaq and Acadian inhabitants in the area.

Oak Island Museum - Near Mohone Bay Nova Canada
The Oak Island Museum is located at the Atlantica Hotel & Marina Oak Island. Just between Chester and Mahone Bay Nova Scotia. This seem to be a make shift Museum, but is still kind of interesting if you happen to be staying at the Atlantica Hotel near Oak Island.

We visited Mahone Bay on September 30th 2016 since we could not make the festival that took place the previous weekend. Once again the time an effort the people of Mahone Bay put into the scarecrow displays left us in Awe. It was extremely busy while we walked around and did some shopping, we also noticed a few tour buses in the area.

Highway 3 dubbed the Lighthouse Route, winds along the coastline through small villages and is a delight to drive with its glimpses of a Maritime outport fishing life. We exited onto a secondary road, Highway 309 that follows the shoreline of a small peninsula for sixty kilometres. We stopped every few minutes for photographs of fishing wharfs, dories, nets, floats, lobster pots and weathered dark brown cedar singled fishing shacks. Turning onto Highway 3, Richard drove to Mahone Bay. “This is a tourists’ delight,” Richard exclaimed. “All these cedar shingled two storey frame houses are incredible. They’re elaborate, freshly painted, and architecturally designed with turrets, and round towers. They’d cost millions of dollars if built today.” “And look, Richard,” I said. “They’re all tourist traps or bed and breakfast places.” Everywhere I looked carpenters and painters were employed fixing things up for the coming tourist season.

Mahone Bay was first settled during Father Le Loutre's War. The first to arrive were those who lived in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and had farm lots throughout the peninsula, including Mahone Bay. The people who settled on the Lunenburg Peninsula, including the present-day village of Mahone Bay, were foreign protestants who were German, Swiss, and Montbéliardais settlers.

The name of this market varies depending on who you speak to, most are settled on the name “Sunday Market” but regardless of what you call it this weekly event is a bargain hunters paradise.
