10. Maungapu
At 124 m, Maungapu is the highest point on Aitutaki. A short 30-minute hike to the top affords spectacular views over the lagoon and lush, palm-studded landscape. A sign on the road opposite Paradise Cove marks the trailhead, and the track is marked on the free maps available on the island.
9. Aroa Marine Reserve
Sheltered by the outlying reef on Rarotonga's west coast, the crystal clear waters of the Aroa Marine Reserve are excellent for snorkeling. Parrot fish, Moorish idols, wrasse, and angelfish are just some of the species snorkelers might spot here, and the lagoon is off-limits to motorized boats making it especially safe for swimming and snorkeling with small children. Kayaking is also a popular pursuit.
8. Cook Islands Cultural Village
Encompassing five acres of lush tropical gardens, the Cook Islands Cultural Village gives visitors a feel for traditional island life. Coconut husking, cooking, fishing, dancing, carving, weaving, and Maori bush medicine are just some of the activities visitors can learn about on the Cultural Village Tour. The packages include a meal and dance show.
7. Avarua
Situated on the north coast of Rarotonga, Avarua is the capital of the Cook Islands. This relaxed little town has a friendly feel, and visitors will find shops, restaurants, and several tourist attractions here. On Sunday mornings, the sweet strains of Maori hymns waft from the CICC (Cook Islands Christian Church). Dating from 1853, the church is made of coral, and some of the island's most famous people are buried in its graveyard, including the first prime minister of the Cook Islands. The Cook Islands Library and Museum Society houses a collection of rare books on the Pacific, and the museum offers a glimpse of the cultural history of the islands.
6. Arorangi
Arorangi is a small village on the west side of the island. It was the first missionary village on Rarotonga. Today sightseers can visit the Cook Island Christian Churchdating from 1849 and view a monument to the island's first missionary, Papeiha. Arorangi Beach is a beautiful spot to bask on the sand by day and watch the sun sink into the sea at dusk.
5. Cross Island Walk (The Needle)
The cross-island walk is a great way to explore Rarotonga's lush scenery. The trail leads from the north coast up to the pinnacle rock Te Rua Manga and then via Wigmore's Falls to the south coast. The falls are beautiful after heavy rain with a pool at their base, but the cascades slow to a trickle during the dry season.
4. Titikaveka Beach
On the southwest coast of Rarotonga, pretty Titikaveka Beach and lagoon is one of the island's best areas to swim and snorkel. The water is often so clear that swimmers need only stand in the lagoon to spot colorful fish. Snorkelers will find a plethora of marine life around the many coral heads, and the lagoon is dotted with blue sea stars.
3. Muri Beach
On the southeast coast of Rarotonga, Muri Beach or Muri Lagoon, as it is sometimes called, is one of the most popular and picturesque beaches on the island. Crystal clear shallows stretch into dreamy shades of aquamarine, and snorkelers can see coral and many species of tropical fish. Four offshore islets, called motu, shimmer on the horizon, enhancing the beauty of the area.
2. Tapuaetai (One Foot Island)
Fringed by gently curving coconut palms, beautiful Tapuaetai, or One Foot Island as it is more commonly known, is the most visited of Aitutaki's motu, and for good reason. This stunning island is worthy of most people's wildest tropical fantasies. Beach-lovers can bask on its beautiful white sands, wade and snorkel in the turquoise lagoon, and even get their passport stamped at the tiny post office.
1. Aitutaki Lagoon
Aitutaki's main attraction is the large picture-perfect lagoon with translucent turquoise water. Twenty-one small islands (motu) dot the outer edge of the lagoon, some of which can be visited on cruises or tours. Kayaking is also a great way to explore these tiny islets. The small island of Maina in the southwest corner of the lagoon offers excellent snorkeling opportunities and is home to a beautiful sandbar known as Honeymoon Island.

Scooter tour through Avarua, Rarotonga
I'm on the back of the scooter with my new fiancee driving, which is truely the most fun way to get around the island. I took a wee video of the scenery as we went through the main town of Raro, starting around the port area just after the airport, heading past the Punanga Nui market area and then onto the main street, pastt he shipwreck remains of the SS Maitai, before heading out the other side, all on the Ara Tapu Road.
RARO tour
My first video since moving to Rarotonga, Cook Islands. The quality is poor even though I used my GoPro. Had to compress the video to a small size because internet is very expensive and slow. I may stick to smaller vids in the future. So far the move is going well. Getting adjusted and still in the middle of buying a local business so I can support my family and make a living in paradise. Have to ride a scooter until my Harley arrives by ship end of October. RIP Mr. Butch.
Visit Rarotonga in the Cook Islands
A short visit to Rarotonga to trek through the island, Dive in the reefs and eat Raro Fried Chicken.
I got a little lost on the Island Trek.... There is a very popular route that goes from North to South.... I had injured my ankles the month before and decided not to do the whole trek but would start from the finish and meet the others near the end.... I somehow ended up far off the main trekking route and found my own adventure. At least I made it back safe and sound!!

Aitutaki e Rarotonga, Cook Islands 4k THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE IN THE WORLD
Rarotonga is a luxuriant place, characterized by beautiful beaches that encircle practically the whole island, and by a coral reef close enough to the coast that gives it so very bathing lagoons and very suitable for snorkeling. The island, for its size and its many attractions, is the right compromise for those who do not want to give up the beauty of the Polynesian sea but to join a series of activities and a minimum of night life and night.
At the center of the island, as can be seen from its photographs, has some real mountains like Raemaru after being able to make various excursions. The main attractions are located along the two concentric roads of the island or in their vicinity: like Arorangi, on the west coast, the first village built by the missionaries. The Cultural Village, located on the secondary street of Arorangi, is a real full immersion in the local culture: with a guided tour you will be led to several traditional huts and witness demonstrations on the history of the islands, Maori medicine, ancient fishing techniques , on wood carving and dance; at the end you will participate in a banquet of traditional foods accompanied by dances.
Near the south coast of the island there is Wigmore's Waterfall, where the Papua Stream flows into a fresh natural pool. You can reach the waterfall directly by car, but the last part is very bumpy and requires the use of an off-road vehicle; alternatively you can take a nice hike on foot starting from the coastal road. Continuing along the Cross-Island Track (the path that crosses the island) you get to the Rua Manga (L'Ago), a peak of 415 m from which you can admire a splendid view towards the north-west and south. The crossing of the island takes 2 or 3 hours and at both ends there are public buses.
The visit to the Cook Islands is not complete unless you visit Aitutaki: the breathtaking charm of its crystal clear waters and its white beaches are the essential ingredients of a trip to this paradise, located 220 km north of Rarotonga (less than a time of flight). It is 20 square meters large and is partly of volcanic origin, dotted with marvelous beaches and unique lagoons in the world, characteristics that make it a place of unparalleled natural beauty and tranquility.
From the summit you can enjoy the view of the spectacular lagoon (about 45 km), with colorful fishes of different varieties, surrounded by numerous, fascinating and accessible, uninhabited small islands (motus).
Tours and activities are available both on land and in its wonderful waters, but you can also rent a car or scooter and explore the island on your own.
Air Rarotonga has regular scheduled flights up to four or five times a day from Rarotonga to Aitutaki (except Sunday). There are also day trips from Rarotonga to Aitutaki: departure from Rarotonga at 8:00 am and return after 5:30 pm, with island tours, lagoon cruise, snorkeling and lunch.
Aitutaki has its own unique beauty represented by its triangular lagoon dotted with pretty motu (small islands) ... it is also interesting from the historical point of view because it has several marae (places for religious gatherings before the arrival of Europeans) open to visitors, and finally offers one of the most beautiful island nights' dance and music shows in the archipelago.
The island's main village is Arutanga, a peaceful resort with a run-down 1828 church that is the oldest of the Cook Islands (and one of the most beautiful) and contains several carved wooden objects and some polychrome stained glass windows. You will then find several nice shops and from the tip of the pier you can admire a splendid view of the coast.
Near the southeastern coast there are some marae made with imposing boulders of black basalt, among the largest of the archipelago and each with its own name. The Maungapu, at the northern end of the island, is a rise of only 125 m but it is worth climbing to the top (with an easy half-hour hike) to admire the view of the lagoon and the island. The lagoon is a wonder: dotted with sandbanks and coral reefs has 21 motu and the advantage of being free of typical sharks instead of similar places.
The most beautiful motu are the Maina, where you can snorkel and see the fetonti nests, and Tapuaetai (or One Foot Island) which boasts a stunning beach and fantastic turquoise waters.
