Double Commuter Train Passage on Japan Shizutetsu Line
Here's another video where I spotted an opportunity while driving at night. After passing below this bridge just as a brightly lit Shizutetsu commuter train was passing overhead I resolved to turn around, stop the car and get this video clip. I sure am glad I did as the delightful lighting effects of car headlights and the well-lit train cars made for a very nice railroad tableau.
This train is part of the Small, privately owned Shizutetsu Railway line (静岡清水線) in Shizuoka city, Japan. The railway began operation in 1908 as a freight line carrying green tea and oranges from the inland areas of Shizuoka to the port city of Shimizu. The line runs roughly parallel to a short section of the historic Old Tokaido Highway which connected the cities of Kyoto and Edo (now Tokyo) during Japan's feudal period. The road you see in this video is Route One which is a modern iteration of the old highway. Though the Shizutetsu line was once for frieght it is now exclusively a passenger moving system. This bridge is between the stations of Furushō (古庄) and Ken-Sōgō Undōjō (県総合運動場). In this video we are looking roughly west. This line is a double track electric operating on 600 V DC. This is an unusually active small line with trains coming roughly every 5 minutes (6 on weekends) and an run time of only 20 minutes end-to-end. Trains are all double-car systems with no conductors and a single operator. Many of the stations have no permanent staff though help can easily be reached via phones provided near the exits.
This line is famous in Japan as the system used by the popular animated character Chibi Maruko-chan (ちびまる子ちゃん). The author of this immensely popular shōjo manga (comic) series Momoko Sakura grew up in this area and chose to situate the series here. The comic was adapted into a weekly television show which most households with small children in Japan watch at 6:00 PM every Sunday evening. Our family frequently enjoys watching Maruko ride this familiar line and we enjoy hearing the names of stations which are so familiar to us. The bridge seen in this video is especially interesting as it marks the location where trains running in opposite directions often pass one another.
Thank you for stopping by to share this experience with me. ~Kurt :-)
