Maiji Mountain, 麦积山, is one of the most famous mountains in China. It's famous for its Buddhist carvings, which date from the 4th-19th centuries....it is an amazing place. It's just outside of the the happiest and most wonderful city I visited in China: Tianshui. Like me on Facebook!
I Climbed the Maijishan Grottoes in Tianshui China
This awesome place is called the Maijishan Grottoes. It's a series of caves on the side of a rock face in a remote area just south of Tianshui, China. The Buddhist monks built thousands of Buddhas over several centuries beginning around the year 384.

This is a project my company Content Arts did a while ago for the Asia Society and the Chinese Government. The purpose was to bring back a virtual cave of a very fragile Chinese national treasure. We installed a surround theatre in the exhibition space for monks and Merchants - the Silk Road exhibit for the opening of the new Asia Society on Park Avenue in NYC. we also built and installed computer kiosks with a virtual interactive tour of the caves and the area,

Maiji Mountain Grottoes
Maiji Mountain Grottoes is located in Maiji District, Tianshui City, Gansu Province. It contains a large amount of physical data on religion, art, architecture and other aspects, which reflects the characteristics of statues in various eras for more than a thousand years, and reflects the development and evolution of Chinese clay sculpture art. It has enriched the history of ancient Chinese culture, and provided a wealth of information and historical facts for later studies of Chinese Buddhist culture. On June 22, 2014, at the 38th UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in Doha, Qatar, Maiji Mountain Grottoes served as the Silk Road: Changan-Tianshan Gallery jointly submitted by China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. A site in the Road Network of Roads was successfully listed on the World Heritage List.

Maiji Caves
Located in the southeast of Tianshui City in Gansu Province, Maiji Caves is one of the four most renowned treasure houses of grotto in China, together with Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang and Yungang Grottoes in Datong.
Maiji Caves has 194 niches with a population of more than 7,200 stone and clay sculptures. Besides, there are around 1,300 square meters ((about 1, 555 square yards) murals in the caves. The caves were first carved in the Late Qin Dynasty (221 BC -- 206 BC) and then restored and expanded in the Northern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Carved on the cliff of the Maiji Mountain, these caves are connected by plank roads. One can only visit the caves via the plank roads.

China Off the Beaten Path - In this travelogue we visit the 1600 year old Maijishan Buddhist Grottoes and the city of Tianshui in Gansu Province, China. The grottoes are one of the four famous buddhist grottoes in China along with the Mogao grottoes near Dunhuang, the Longmen grottoes near Luoyang and the Yungang grottoes near Datong. After the grottoes we visit the city of Tianshui, a little visited city with a lot of character, surrounded by mountains.

Their findings will be used to provide scientific support for environmental protection and social development in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
