Gqebera Public Library opened in Walmer
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on Monday officially opened the Gqebera Public Library, in Walmer, Port Elizabeth. There are now twenty-six public libraries in the Nelson Mandela Bay.
The Gqebera Public Library caters for early, Easy, Medium, Junior, and Early teenage readers, offering the services of lending of books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, story times, information sources (journals), magazines & audio books).
For many years, the people of Walmer used the Walmer Town library that is located approximately a kilometre away.
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, who delivered the keynote speech at the launch said that he hoped the library will assist in creating a culture of reading among kids and adults.
“Parents have a big role to play, in educating their children about the importance of reading, he said.
Trollip also told the learners, who gathered to witness the opening of the library, to learn to do proper research and not rely on Googling everything as some information online might be incorrect.
“Don’t accept everything you read on Google, the Library is the best way to build your knowledge, he said.
That is why the municipality has provided a library to your community for your children to build their knowledge.
“A library is not a place to play, but a place to learn, books can take you away from Walmer and find yourself somewhere beautiful by just reading it.”
Also, speaking at the event, Executive Director for Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, Noxolo Nqwazi, said that, “the library has computers, book, daily newspapers and so on, so it caters for everyone - not only the school children.
“For example, you can come to the library to do your CV, use the daily newspapers to search for possible employment.”
Nqwazi urged the community to look after their new library.
Mayor Trollip agreed; “I’m convinced that this community will look after this library and they understand how important it is for the child to broaden their horizons through learning and acquiring knowledge.
“So, I was counting on the parents and the teachers to encourage the children to make use of this wonderful experience, right here in Walmer.”

PE City Hall on Vuyisile Mini Square
The Port Elizabeth City Hall, which is located overlooking Vuyisile Mini Square (Market Square), was built between 1858 and 1862. The attractive clock tower was only added in 1883. The City Hall until the advent of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality served as a Council Chamber. Now the hall is utilised as a concert hall, a lecture hall and offices for city council employees and the Mayor.
The City Hall was proclaimed a national monument in 1973. It burnt down in 1977 and was rebuilt. Also in the Square, is a replica of the Diaz Cross, donated by the Portuguese Government to commemorate the arrival of Bartholomew Diaz in Algoa Bay in 1488.
Located on Vuyisile Mini Square the City Hall stands sentinel over what was formerly known as Market Square.
The name change from Market Square to Vuyisile Mini Square took place on 6 November 2010 in memory of Vuyisile Mini who was a union leader, a member of Umkhonto we Sizwe, a singer and the first ANC member to be executed by the government in 1964.
On Vuyisile Mini Square 23 black workers were killed by police and a white vigilante in 1920. The victims were workers in the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union in the city. They were demanding the release of Samuel Masabalala, their leader, who had been arrested for fighting for 10 shillings per day for workers.
One other notable building around the square is the Public library and in front of the library is a marble statue of Queen Victoria which was unveiled in 1903.
For a long time Councillors used to park on the square but that has since ceased and the square is now open to the public.
The Square is one of the most noteworthy landmarks of Port Elizabeth. The ships landing beach was nearby in the early days and the handling of most of the goods in and out of the city was done through the Square, turning the square into a busy trading ground for local farmers. A bell was installed to alert the community that trading was taking place and the bell also served as a fire alarm.

#SANLiC17 1 4 1 NMMU LIS and OA Robert Pearce
The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Library and Information Services (NMMU LIS) in Port Elizabeth embarked on supporting the open access initiative in 2015 through an open access workshop that included speakers from the National Research Foundation (NRF), librarians from various South African universities and the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). The paper will focus on amongst others: open access and what it entails, open educational resources (OER), the NRF Statement on Open Access, writing an open access policy, signing of the Berlin Declaration, starting an institutional repository (with guidelines and terms of reference for an institutional repository task team), and the NMMU LIS contribution to open access.
The speaker was also responsible for writing the Open Access Policy for NMMU and the driver to ensure that the NMMU signs the Berlin Declaration and will share these experiences and difficulties to obtain “buy-in” from the university authorities and how to overcome that.

A botanical garden or botanic garden is a garden dedicated to the collection, cultivation and display of a wide range of plants labelled with their botanical names. It may contain specialist plant collections such as cacti and succulent plants, herb gardens, plants from particular parts of the world, and so on; there may be greenhouses, shadehouses, again with special collections such as tropical plants, alpine plants, or other exotic plants. Visitor services at a botanical garden might include tours, educational displays, art exhibitions, book rooms, open-air theatrical and musical performances, and other entertainment.
Botanical gardens are often run by universities or other scientific research organizations, and often have associated herbaria and research programmes in plant taxonomy or some other aspect of botanical science. In principle, their role is to maintain documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display, and education, although this will depend on the resources available and the special interests pursued at each particular garden.
The origin of modern botanical gardens can be traced to European medieval medicinal gardens known as physic gardens, the first of these being founded during the Italian Renaissance in the 16th century. This early concern with medicinal plants changed in the 17th century to an interest in the new plant imports from explorations outside Europe as botany gradually established its independence from medicine. In the 18th century, systems of nomenclature and classification were devised by botanists working in the herbaria and universities associated with the gardens, these systems often being displayed in the gardens as educational order beds. With the rapid rise of European imperialism in the late 18th century, botanic gardens were established in the tropics, and economic botany became a focus with the hub at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, near London.
Over the years, botanical gardens, as cultural and scientific organisations, have responded to the interests of botany and horticulture. Nowadays, most botanical gardens display a mix of the themes mentioned and more; having a strong connection with the general public, there is the opportunity to provide visitors with information relating to the environmental issues being faced at the start of the 21st century, especially those relating to plant conservation and sustainability.

Masibambane SSS Library Revival Campaign
We as Unako with the students of the Masibambane Reading Space would like your assistance in Reviving the Masibambane Senior Secondary School Library.
Since 2011 there has been no functional public library in the KwaZakhele area. Learners have to travel far in order to reach the nearest library. This travelling is at times costly as most of the learners come from poverty stricken families. Those who can’t pay to get to the library usually walk which can be unsafe and time consuming.
As Unako we run a Reading Space program at Masibambane. The program is designed to aid the literacy development (reading & writing) of the learners. Our most recent survey earlier this year states that 70% of the learners would read more if they had access to material that was appealing to them: this being stories that they could relate to, based on age and background. 65% of our learners said that they would read more if they had peers or family to read with.
Our revival of the library entails a physical refurbishment as well as creating a vibrant learning environment in the library. We would like to do this by incorporating a technology platform in the library where students can access and utilize e-learning material from across the world. We will further create extra-curricular programs such as homework clubs, debating, public speaking and leadership development initiatives within the library.
We believe that good functioning libraries are the cornerstone in building learners who will become independent thinkers who are able to grapple with the worlds ever changing problems.
