Sonoma County, Guerneville Gastronomy: The Mini-Empire of Crista Luedtke
Guerneville is a small town with a bohemian vibe, located in western Sonoma County along the Russian River. Since 2008 it’s also been the mini-empire of entrepreneur Crista Luedtke who transformed downtown Guerneville into a hipster destination. In this episode, we check out some of her popular businesses including Boon: Hotel + Spa, Boon: Eat + Drink, Big Bottom Market (and its yummy Oprah-worthy biscuits), and Guerneville Bank Club for some handcrafted ice cream & pie.

COPS- S#X - Explosion in Sonoma, California

Sparks from a tow truck are suspected of triggering a 40-acre brush fire Sunday south of Sonoma that swept through a wooden pallet factory, sending flames towering into the air and causing about $1 million in damage.
The fire started about 1:30 p.m. near Highway 121 and Eighth Street East when sparks from a tow truck pulling a car dolly ignited dry grass along the side of the road, said Ray Mulas, chief of the volunteer Schell-Vista Fire Protection District.
The blaze spread to nearby Sonoma Pacific Co., igniting 40-foot stacks of wooden pallets, numerous outbuildings and detonating a 1,000-gallon propane tank in a loud explosion, Mulas said.
Once it got into the pallets it became a very intense fire fight that was quite difficult, Mulas said.
No one was injured and no homes burned, he said, but one resident was evacuated as a safety precaution.
Heat from the fire blew out at least one overhead electrical transformer, showering more sparks onto the ground. In all, five structures were destroyed or damaged in the surrounding area and about 10 RVs burned, Mulas said.
At least 10 commercial buildings were spared, he said.
Fortunately, the wind has died down and they have the weather working in their favor, said CHP Officer Anna Paulson.
Mulas said as many as 1,000 residents may have been without electrical power.
Witnesses described 70-foot tall flames as the pallet company ignited.
Matthew Nagan, owner of Shellville Grill on nearby Broadway, said he was forced to close his restaurant.
Oh my God, it's insane, said Nagan. The whole back of the building is covered in flames. It's all toast.

Sebastopol California Walking Tour for Tourists and RVers
There are no campgrounds in Sebastopol, but it's on the way to the campgrounds in Guerneville, Duncan Mills and on the beaches, like at Bodega Bay. It's also near the KOA in Petaluma. (The KOA in Petaluma is very expensive, like $60-70 a night, and they pack you in like sardines. The campgrounds in Duncan Mills, like Casini Ranch, are much more scenic, like right up to the Redwoods, and closer to the beaches. Those are $50-$70 a night for RVs.) There are also some Sonoma county parks, like Lake Sonoma a little west of Healdsberg, that take RVs, and are about $35 a night.
Sebastopol is an eco friendly, socially conscious little town, saturated with kitchy and whimsical art, nice people, classic hippy style, great restraunts and organic and gourmet food, reasonably priced. They also have movies, lectures, music, and other entertainment on a regular basis. So if you are in Sonoma county, stop by Sebastopol, on Hwy 116 or Hwy12.

Short Outing To Concord, CA (Friday, March 21, 2014)
In this video, it shows me, with my mom, sis and Richie have a short, mini outing around Concord, CA. The main reason that we went up to Concord was since my mom had an important appointment at the Christ Community Church of the Nazarene around noon time or so.
The video starts off by showing part of the road trip up to the city of Concord. We headed straight to the church and it was nearing noon time. Since they were behind schedule of their appointments, we got to look around the church's facility a bit. It's such a nice day out. It was my first time seeing inside and around the area. Their gym had carpet as well which was quite neat. After looking around a bit, me, sis and Richie went exploring a bit around the area. Richie had to stop by a bank as well. It was a nice city. Too bad we had a limited time to explore.
After exploring a bit, we went back to the church, waited for my mom to finish her appointment and then headed out to eat lunch around the city. By the way, we saw a couple of our old Spanish congregation members, which were so happen to be Pastor Elsa and her husband.
We went to eat lunch at the Morning Star Cafe, located deep inside Concord, CA. We were wanting to try their Filipino food here. What was interesting about the restaurant was that it had just reopened a couple weeks or so prior. What happened was that the original owner/cook had won the lottery so he backed off to continue working in the restaurant. So this couple was there at the current time, trying to bring it back to life. Their menu was also starting out from scratch again...with less than 10 items on their whole menu. But despite the rough times of the restaurant, their food was delicious, especially the shanghai lumpia and pansit, though the pansit was just a tad too salty.
I ordered the Paresilog meal. It included beef pares, fried rice and eggs. By the way, the cook gave us his specialty of beef ribs and beef strips for free, since we were out-of-towners!
After a satisfying lunch, we left the place just after 3 p.m. We stopped by McD's to get some drinks and for last-minute restroom break. I got an Oreo McFlurry for the road...yummy!! Perfect to have on this warm, early spring day.
It was a nice mini outing we had at Concord, CA! 'Til next time, happy traveling!
Revealing The Beauty Of The Historical Fern Grove Cottages In Guerneville!
I went over to Fern Grove Cottages recently to talk to the Innkeeper Annie Boutelle to find out more about the historical cottages and what they have to offer people visiting the Russian River. What she revealed to me was absolutely stunning! To begin this story I would first like to pay tribute to Fern Grove Cottages for having an Innkeeper! This seems to be a dying breed as many of the Hotels, Inns, and Bed and Breakfasts have switched to using managers and staff. Fern Grove is unique in that everything about the place screams of the old ways. They have Annie, a devoted Innkeeper, who spends her days compiling binders full of information on specific things people would like to do, see, or eat at while they are visiting the Russian River. Her binders include local events, bird watching, hiking, biking, Regional parks, Night life (theater, art, etc), relaxation (meditation, yoga, spas, etc), wine tours, history of the area, and so much more! She answers the phone, chats with visitors, and coordinates everything while maintaining a cheerful, positive attitude that keeps people coming back year after year. Annie has been the Innkeeper at Fern Grove for four years and previously worked at the R3! She is a local and is a certified tour guide. Her knowledge of the Russian River area is invaluable to anyone visiting the Russian River!
The next thing I noticed was the impeccably kept gardens and flowerbeds that surround Fern Grove Cottages and create a magical setting for the people staying there! There is a community garden area with BBQ pits and fresh produce that is shared with the people who are guests of Fern Grove. Mario has been the gardener there for 20 years and has created an absolutely stunning landscape that is enjoyed by the guests year round.
Fern Grove Is pet friendly and is welcoming of children of all ages as well. Their Lounge is decorated with stunning art, books for avid readers, and board games for children.
The history of the place is interesting as well. Fern Grove was originally built in the 1920's and many of the regulars have continued to come back for generations! There is what used to be an old outhouse that stands in the middle of the courtyard surrounded by beautiful flowers. Since the onset of modern day plumbing the outhouse has been converted into a garden shed, however the history of what once was continues to delight guests time and time again!
Fern Grove Cottages consists of 21 cottages that are subdivided into three categories. The first are one room studio cottages that are perfect for a single person or a couple. The second are one bedroom cottages that also have a living room and a small kitchenette and the third are the two bedroom cottages that also have their own living room but contain full functioning kitchens as well. What I found most interesting about these cottages was that they were all themed! There was a cowboy theme, a butterfly theme, and a bird theme in the cottages I got a peek at! Also many of the cottages offer jetted spa tubs and fireplaces to create a completely relaxing atmosphere for visitors!
As a local Guerneville real estate agent in the Russian River are it is vital that I have a working knowledge of what is in the area and what services they provide so that when a visiting client asks where the best place to stay in town is, or what the best restaurant in town is, I have places that I can recommend to them and know that they will get the best possible service. Fern Grove Cottages is a place that I would recommend to anyone visiting Guerneville and the Russian River. They are welcoming and take the time and care to making sure that their guests are happy and well taken care of! If you are visiting Guerneville call Innkeeper Annie at 707-869-8150 or visit ferngrove.com and make a reservation today!
