ME: Augusta, State Capital
When Maine separated from Massachusetts and became a state in 1820. The first capital of Maine was Portland, but it moved to Augusta because of its more central location. Augusta became the capital in 1832.
Built using Maine granite, the State House was based on the design of the Massachusetts State House.
A gilt copper statue of Minerva, the draped female figure of Wisdom, by William Clark Noble of Gardiner, surmounted the dome.
The weather-worn, long- oxidized copper sheathing of the dome was replaced in 2014 for the first time since 1909-1920. Gone was the long familiar green color. After the scaffolding was removed and the project completed, the dome shined like a new penny for a short time until it turned to brown. The dome will not turn green again for about 30 years.
The governor's office is located in renovated space on the second floor at the rear of the central portion of the Capitol along with the Hall of Flags and the law library.
At the south side of the Capitol grounds, the Maine State Library, Maine State Museum and Maine State Archives are housed in a modern building.
