German WWII Battery & Bunkers in Grandcamp-Maisy Normandy, France.
Take a walkabout in and around the World War II German Maisy Battery & Bunkers with my Father and I, in August 2019. We were fortunate to be the only 2 people visiting that early in the day, so we had a chance to visit alone all bunkers that were open to the public.
For additional information, please visit for a great deal of historical background. We highly recommend that if you have a chance to visit in person, it is well worth it (they are only open in season, check the site).
From their website: Maisy Battery was one of the largest German defensive positions in the American landing area on D-day. It had the role of defending the coast behind the western end of Omaha Sector and at the southern edge of Utah Sector. Today, it is open to the public after being buried for over 60 years and you can walk through over 2 miles of original German trenches. You can go into bunker after bunker as you walk around this astonishing site.
Comments and questions are welcome.

8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Gary Sterne, owner of German battery:
The purpose of the site was to defend this region, the beaches, the right hand edge of Utah Beach and Omaha Beach from coastal attack. So it's a coastal defence battery. It's set inland on the reverse slope of a hill so the ship cannot fire at it, cannot destroy it on D-Day, which is why it survived in such good condition. And the purpose of it was to repel the invasion and it continued to fire despite the RAF (Royal Air Force) bombing it and other people attacking for three days in the direction of Omaha Beach.

12. SOUNDBITE: (English) Gary Sterne, owner of the German battery:
I searched the British Royal Air Force Archives in England and found the RAF bombing photographs for this area and they showed a huge complex with a hospital, a headquarters building and the big gun platforms which we've uncovered now. We found them all buried beneath metres of soil.

16. SOUNDBITE: (English) Gary Sterne, owner of the German battery:
This battery has largely been covered up after the war by the local farmers and people who needed the land to live on. So all the buildings here have been uncovered and we've dug out each building and taken artefacts from them. And we found all sorts of things.

STORYLINE:
Foreigners who dream of owning a piece of France think of buying a Paris apartment, a villa on the French Riviera, or a country house in Provence.
But not Gary Sterne, who dug up a German gun battery on the Normandy coast and bought the land around it.
After finding an old World War II soldier's map in 2002, the British history enthusiast, author and collector of military memorabilia says he went in search of buried treasure in the coastal town of Grandcamp-Maisy.
In an overgrown field about 100 metres (330 feet) from a small road, Sterne came upon a 20-by-30-metre (65-by-100-foot) slab of concrete, then an entrance, a room, more rooms, a tunnel and 2.4 kilometres (1.5 miles) of trenches.
Sterne had unearthed a huge complex that was part of Hitler's formidable Atlantic Wall, a coastal defence system wiped out with D-Day and the ensuing Allied invasion.
For three-and-a half years, Sterne slowly bought up parcels of land in Grandcamp-Maisy where the complex is located, between Omaha Beach and Utah Beach, negotiating with 27 families.
The purpose of this site was to defend this region, the beaches, the right hand edge of Utah Beach and Omaha Beach from coastal attack, he said.
Sterne said the battery was in excellent shape, noting that some of its walls were still marked with soldiers' graffiti.
This battery has largely been covered up after the war by the local farmers and people who needed the land to live on. So all the buildings here have been uncovered and we've dug out each building and taken artefacts from them. And we found all sorts of things, he said.

MAISY BATTERY - NORMANDY 2007
Some footage of the Maisy battery which lay undiscovered for over 60 years.... It is a liitle hard to find, but worth a visit. Located southwest of Maisy, at a place called La Martinière, this army battery was composed of four 105-mm guns. Just before D-Day, three of these guns were placed in casemates, the last one remaining in its open-air pit. As featured in BBC2 Timewatch with Richard Hammond.

#60: The Cover-up At Omaha Beach with Gary Sterne - Conspiracy Queries with Alan Park
Gary Sterne was a co-founder of Armour and Skirmish, a couple of magazines about military intervention. An avid collector, Gary wound up finding a map which enticed Gary to try to buy the land represented by that map, to verify the contents.
Once upon the actual land, Gary soon discovered some hidden history about World War 2 that has never been discussed in public - a cover-up regarding the planned points of attack at Omaha Beach. A gun battery called Pointe du Hoc, in Normandy, France, was shown to never have had guns, and countless men suffered from what seems to have been a bogus mission - that for many, did not end well.
Gary's research skills are in full force here as he delivers the story of how he came to write a must-have addition to anyone that thinks they know the full story of D-Day and the US Rangers; The Cover-up At Omaha Beach.
