Maithon Dam,situated on river Barakar is a popular tourist and travel destination & picnic spot in whole Jharkhand,Bihar and West Bengal. It is famous for blue water and green forests,small islands,boating and watersports, deer park,historical temples,hills,adivasi villages,underground hydel power station,bungalows on islands,small wild animals etc.
It's 25km far from Asansol and around 50km from Dhanbad & around 230km from Kolkata. Nearest railway station is Kumardubi,all trains going to Dhanbad pass by Kumardubi. Can be reached by minibus from Aaansol,auto from Barakar or by car. Nearest road link is Sanjay Chowk in NH2 bypass or Dubudi Checkpost,NH2 bypass near Kalyaneswari.
Nearby travel destinations are- Dam itself,Deer Park,Kalyaneswari Temple,Bathanbadi & Sithabadi villages,Temple on top of Bhandar Pahar,Millenium Park,Hydel power station(requires permission),Panchet Dam,Garh Panchot,Jain Temple(at Barakar),Lameyar park(at Asansol).
Best time to come here is December to February if you want to picnic or travel,that's the tourist season,or July August if you want to see flood gates open and water is flowing out from the flood gates.
