Maithon Dam,situated on river Barakar is a popular tourist and travel destination & picnic spot in whole Jharkhand,Bihar and West Bengal. It is famous for blue water and green forests,small islands,boating and watersports, deer park,historical temples,hills,adivasi villages,underground hydel power station,bungalows on islands,small wild animals etc.

It's 25km far from Asansol and around 50km from Dhanbad & around 230km from Kolkata. Nearest railway station is Kumardubi,all trains going to Dhanbad pass by Kumardubi. Can be reached by minibus from Aaansol,auto from Barakar or by car. Nearest road link is Sanjay Chowk in NH2 bypass or Dubudi Checkpost,NH2 bypass near Kalyaneswari.

Nearby travel destinations are- Dam itself,Deer Park,Kalyaneswari Temple,Bathanbadi & Sithabadi villages,Temple on top of Bhandar Pahar,Millenium Park,Hydel power station(requires permission),Panchet Dam,Garh Panchot,Jain Temple(at Barakar),Lameyar park(at Asansol).

Best time to come here is December to February if you want to picnic or travel,that's the tourist season,or July August if you want to see flood gates open and water is flowing out from the flood gates.

MAITHAN DAM (DHANBAD)

Maithon, derived its name from “Mai Ka Sthan”, meaning the place for the Hindu Goddess Maa Kalyaneshwari. It is located on the banks of river Barakar. The Maithon Dam is located about 48 kms from the Coal City of Dhanbad. The dam with an underground power station is one of its kinds in the whole of South East Asia. The lake on which it is built is spread over 65 square kilometers. This was developed by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC Ltd) way back in the year 1948. The dam is about 15712 ft long and about 165 ft long. The underground power station has a capacity to generate around 60,000 KW of electric power.

The Maithon dam itself is located on a picturesque landscape amidst a beautiful lake and beautiful green forests. You could avail boating with friends and family on the lake. Apart from that you could even enjoy a walk in the beautiful green forests around the lake. Watching the sun rise and sunset is delightful for tourists, which you must not miss when you are in Maithon. If you are spiritual minded then you must also visit the ancient temple of Mother Goddess Kalyaneshwari.

In this ride , I went to Dhanbad and Maithon Dam on my Dominar. It was about 250kms ride and I ride all alone. I ride through country roads, Highways as well as muddy offroad patches. I experienced lot of things this time and also It was raining cats and dogs.

Maithon is a Town located in Jharkhand-West Bengal Border. Most of the township part and reservoir is in Jharkhand and the Hydel is located in west Bengal. The place is stretched between Dhanbad Dist. In Jharkhand and Burdwan Dist in Bengal.
Maithon also known as 'Kashmir of Koyalanchal' because of its location in the coal belt of india on the Barakar river is a very famous picnic and weekend destination. The Dam is the Biggest dam of Damodar Valley Corporation and was built for flood control and power generation. It was founded by India's first prime minister Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru. Maithon got its name from Mai-ka-sthan or maayer sthan which literally means mothers abode as there is an ancient kalyaneshwari temple here which was built by the king of Barakar in 16th century.

Get in:
Maithon can be reached by train, bus or car, from Kolkata from WB or Dhanbad from Jharkhand.

By Train:
Kumardhubi(KMME) is the nearest railway station to maithon Dam at a distance of 9Kms. There are frequent Express and Passenger trains to this station. There are direct trains to Howrah, Dhanbad, Ranchi, Patna, Bhagalpur, Jabalpur, Delhi, Dehradoon, Jammutawi, Ahmedabad, varanasi etc. The best train to reach kumardhubi from howrah or Dhanbad are Black-Diamond Exp, Coal-field Exp & HWH-DHN Double decker Exp. The railway station is small in size and lacks infrastructure. Local auto charges Rs-100 from this railway station to dam. You can also get share autos from Kumardhubi to Kali Pahari in Maithon from where the Dam starts. One can also come to Dhanbad or Asansol railway station from any Part of the country and from there travel by road as both are nearly equidistant from Maithon.

By Bus:
There are no major Bus stations in Maithon. The only Regular Bus services are From Asansol. There is Mini bus service from asansol bus stand to maithon. These Buses run at an interval of every half an hour between 5:30am to 6:00 pm. though its always better to confirm the last bus timing at bus stand as it changes during winters. Maithon By-pass Lies in Kolkata-Dhanbad bus route. you can get dropped at By pass road, from where you can take auto to Dam area.

By road:
The distance of Maithon is 30Kms from Asansol and 40kms from Dhanbad. After reaching Asansol, one can hire Taxi or Auto. If you are Driving, The roads are decent and it takes nearly 35 Minutes. From Dhanbad its a 1hr drive. The NH2 stretch is really good and after that DVC roads too are decently maintained once you enter the township. From Calcutta its approx 230Km oneside drive. Roads are good,except the Panagarh stretch.

Best time to visit: October-February. The winters can be quite cold with the Minimum Temperature often dropping as low as 5 degree celsius.

Get Around:
The Tourist area of maithon is very small and one can easily walk around and enjoy all the places. Also you can hire an Auto-rickshaw to go around. People coming from distant places can hire Taxi from Dhanbad or Asansol. Also the whole Dam and kalyaneshwari stretch comes in Asansol-Maithon Minibus service route so its better to take these buses if you are going to kalyaneshwari.

Eat:
On the Jharkhand end of the Dam you can get a variety of chat, dhokla, golgappa, chana-bhatura etc. Also Jhalmuri here is worth giving a try. But beware of the quality of food.
