Water level has dipped below dead storage mark at Majalgaon dam in Maharashtra's Beed. The latest revival of monsoon has offered a fresh lease of life to standing Kharif crops in Marathwada. The widespread showers of light to medium intensity reported during past 48 to 72 hours have partially erased the rainfall deficit experienced by the region with percentage of expected showers increasing to 56 per cent. Majority of dams, especially major irrigation projects, are still awaiting spells of heavy rainfall to come out of the dead storage. The drinking water scarcity still plagues several parts of Marathwada with over 2300 tankers still pressed into the service.

Maharashtra's Beed district, reeling from severe water shortage, has adopted a risky practice to get water. Every day, in many areas of the district, children are tied with ropes and lowered deep into wells to get water - where pitchers can't reach on their own. This highly dangerous method of fetching water has been followed for nearly three years. (Audio in Hindi)

Latur, Apr 20 (ANI): Manjara dam, one of the major source of water in Latur, Maharashtra, has completely dried up. Dams that supply water to several districts in the area have dried up in the recent weeks. Other districts such as Osmanabad and Beed are also reeling under severe water crisis. People in many villages quenched their thirst from this dam, but now finding drinking water is difficult. There has been no rainfall in the Marathwada region since last four years.
