[Wikipedia] Tingri (town)
Gangga (or Tingri according to name of region) (Tibetan: སྒང་དགའ་, Wylie: sgang dga', Chinese: 岗嘎镇; Pinyin: gǎnggā zhèn) is a town in southern Tibet. It is in Tingri County, Shigatse Prefecture with a population of around 523. It is often used as a base by mountain climbers preparing to ascend Mount Everest or Cho Oyu. Tingri Shelkar (Dring ri Shel dkar) is a small town approximately 60 km north-west of Mount Everest and just over 50 km from the Nepali border in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It is at an altitude of about 4,300 metres (approx. 14,107 feet). The old Shekar Dorje Dzong, or fort, is above the new town and used to enclose Shekar Chode, a Gelug monastery which was completely destroyed but is being restored. It is known for its spectacular views of Mount Everest, Mount Lhotse, Mount Makalu, and Cho Oyu, which comprise four of the six highest mountains in the world.
Tingri used to be an important trading post where Sherpas from Nepal exchanged rice, grain and iron for Tibetan wool. livestock and salt. It gives its name to the broad upland basin more than 4,500 metres high that is known as the Tingri Plain. One must cross the pass known as the Lakpa La (5,220 m) to the north to reach the Tsangpo Valley system. Shallow, fast-flowing rivers of melted snow water make its grassy meadowland ideal for grazing by Tibetan animals. The plain used to abound with gazelles, blue sheep, antelopes and khyang or wild asses but, unfortunately, most of the animals are gone now. The Chinese army has a small base nearby.
Tingri Lankor (Ding ri glang 'khor) — Padampa's Residence was founded in 1097 CE by the South Indian Buddhist adept, Padampa Sangye (died 1117) who made five visits to Tibet and was an important person in the re-establishment of the Buddhadharma in Tibet. His consort was the famous Tibetan dakini Machik Labdron. The gompa or temple was built in the Padampa Sange's meditation cave and became the seat of the Dampapa School of Tibetan Buddhism. It is in the process of restoration.

Episode 089: Dingri, Old Tingri
He Has Asked For The Pancake. Well, here we are back in Tingri. Not New Tingri but Old Tingri, the gateway to the Everest region in Tibet. Honestly I never thought I'd be back here after 2003, but life is funny that way.
Of all the experiences I've had in Tibet, Old Tingri is one I can do without. This place is just so rough. You might think it looks a lot like Shegar did, and you'd be right, but Tingri has something else: more tourist traffic. See, almost every expedition that goes to the North side of Everest here in Tibet passes through Tingri.
For many climbers, this is their first taste or rural Tibet. Since most people only spend a couple of days here acclimating to the altitude--and are slightly altitude sick when they arrive--people tent to mistreat Tingri a bit.
All of that comes through in the energy and the feeling of this place. It just feels tired and abused.
We'll do our best to treat it with respect. Thank goodness we're only spending one night here!

Mount Everest, also known in Nepal as Sagarmāthā and in China as Chomolungma/珠穆朗玛峰, is Earth's highest mountain. Its peak is 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level.[1] Mount Everest is in the Mahalangur Range.[8][9] The international border between China (Tibet Autonomous Region) and Nepal runs across Everest's summit point. Its massif includes neighbouring peaks Lhotse, 8,516 m (27,940 ft); Nuptse, 7,855 m (25,771 ft), and Changtse, 7,580 m (24,870 ft).
In 1856, the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India established the first published height of Everest, then known as Peak XV, at 8,840 m (29,002 ft). The current official height of 8,848 m (29,029 ft) as recognised by China and Nepal was established by a 1955 Indian survey and subsequently confirmed by a Chinese survey in 1975. In 2005, China remeasured the height of the mountain and got a result of 8844.43 m. An argument regarding the height between China and Nepal lasted five years from 2005 to 2010. China argued it should be measured by its rock height which is 8,844 m but Nepal said it should be measured by its snow height 8,848 m. In 2010, an agreement was finally reached by both sides that the height of Everest is 8,848 m and Nepal recognises China's claim that the rock height of Everest is 8,844 m.[10]

Gama valley - Tibet's hidden valley east of Everest
This film portrays Mt Everest's now-preserved Gama Valley -- sometimes called the most beautiful valley in the world. The Gama (sometimes incorrectly spelled Kama) Valley is a seldom-visited, hidden valley where four summits (Everest, Lhotse, Chomolonzo, Makalu) circle magnificent forests and flowers. Deforestation of the two-meter diameter trees had started in the late 1980s when the valley became a core zone in the Qomolangma (Mt Everest) National Nature Preserve. This film is narrated primarily by Daniel C Taylor who was the principal instigator working with the Government of China to create the national park ... and subsequently other parks across the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Located at the downstream of PumQu in Tingri county and Dinggye county, Garma valley, “the most beautiful valley in the world” is 55km from east to west and 8km from south to north, covering an area of 440km2. The various ecological zones boast different types of evergreen, half-evergreen and other primeval forests. The most unusual type of forest is consisted of junipers, which cover a vast area of the virgin forest. Its ancient and majestic appearance makes you feel like travelling in ancient time. The wondrous snow mountains, wild flowers, wild animals are waiting for you. It is truly a trekking paradise. If you like great scenic views, why not just walk in the Garma Valley.
But this place is not easy to reach. The only transportation available is through yaks and horses. The journey requires lots of energy and stamina. Therefore, if you decide to go, you need to get well prepared both physically and mentally.
From Garma valley, you can have a vantage point to enjoy the vista of snow mountains and glaciers only at a price of raising your head. Besides, Mt. Everest is covered with giant glaciers, among which the longest is 26km Rongbuk Glacier. And on those glaciers, there are various seracs, majestic ice cliffs, adventurous cracks, and even thrilling avalanches.
Unlike normal treks, apart from a local guide, travelers will have to hire a cook, some yaks and yak porters with them. A local guide is necessary because the roads are complicated and rough. Because of the high elevation, camping at the foot of the snow mountain is pretty exciting and somehow challenging. Bring the warmest sleeping bag you have. The temperature will drop dramatically when night falls. It may be very heavy for you to carry so much, but when others are too frozen to get asleep, you wouldn’t regret it.
One thousand years ago when Guru Rinpoche bought Buddhism in Tibet, he found Gama valley as a retreat. We can find beautiful rocks out there mixed with different minerals. They are very unusual and there are cultural description why these rocks are here.
Its a rare rock that we will find and the special fact about these rock are in the shape of a cave, mountain and rock.

Drive through Zhangmu town in Tibet
Traveling through Zhangmu town in Tibet. One can see the Himalaya while traveling on the twisted road and plentiful waterfalls in the mountains along the road.
Zhangmu Town lies in the southern piedmont of the median Himalayas, about 776 km. (482 mi.) away from the capital of Tibet Lhasa. It also borders Nepal to the south; Sino-Nepal Friendship Bridge is only 10 more km. (6 miles) away and another 100 km. (62 miles)'s drive will lead you into the capital of Nepal, Katmandu. After the drudgery of the Sino-Nepal Road, it has become a most welcome sight both for visitors and traders alike. Much is supposedly owed to nearby Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the world. Visitors come mainly for climbing up the lofty mountain, appreciating the heavenly sights, or pilgrimage at its holiness. However, for the particular location, Zhangmu Town itself can form an interesting array of scenery for the visitors.
